      • Hello All, I have just picked a new DSLR - Sony Alpha 200... Didn't have much clue about things as so far have been using only the simple DigiCams...

but the Specs are as such :-
        • 18-70 mm F3.5 - F5.6 lens
        • 23.6 x 15.8 mm CCD sensor
        • Built-in fixed low-pass filter
        • 10.8 million total pixels
        • 10.2 million effective pixels

So much I understood... Rest can anyone suggest some good simple user manual - not the company one - but something where I can understand the basics like aperture, shutter speed and how to use this!!! So far - have been using it in the Auto Mode - both for taking pics and the auto focus too!!!

        please help!!!

        • @Goat: Search through the net for aperture, shutter and all the different modes of shooting. There is a ton of information present on the net..

And congratulations for picking up the Sony. Any particular reason for not going the Canon/ Nikon way?
          :)

          • @Aryan - only two reasons:-

            1. The shop keeper who seemed a nice guy to explain things to me said , the Sony comes with a 18-70 lens, where as Canon and Nikon ones come with 18-55 lens. Said this lens is better.
            2. Sony was costing 23.7K, Canon 29.9 K and Nikon 32.5K - price does matter!!!

These two reasons made me pick the sony.

And what about subsequent lenses that you WILL buy in the future? I am sorry being so naive but I have no idea which lenses does Sony support? Carl Zeiss, I presume? Does it support third party lenses like those from Sigma, Tamron and the likes?

And 32.5k for the Nikon - which model are you talking about specifically?
              :)

              • I haven't thought per se about the lenses frankly. Thought about just buying it. The manual says it supports the following:-
                1. Minolta Maxxum mount lenses,
                2. Sony α (alpha) lens lineup - including Carl Zeiss lenses

Haven't thought about it - in fact am quite naive about this and any question helps me learn more!!!

sony has a decent range of lenses now, but nowhere near the top two ones.

also, their equivalent lenses (the top quality ones - like the 70-200/2.8 and the 24-70/2.8) are costlier than the canon/nikons, the 70-200 atleast in Japan costs one and a half times as much as the canon 2.8 IS - and do not have IS too, as the IS is built into the body of the alpha system.

EDIT: Adorama prices (a US store) seem to be par for these, i guess it is just Sony ripping off people as usual in Japan, which is weird as there is a lot of competition here.

This is THE best thing about the Alpha line-up of cameras; their built in image stablising systems. Doesn't matter which lens you use, it by default, becomes an IS lens!

Is there anyway that the Sony D-SLRs can support third party lenses (like Sigma, Tamron, etc.)? What mount does the Sony use?
                    :)

sony bought out Konica Minolta camera business, and what sony calls the alpha mount is the Minolta A mount of their Maxxum series of SLRs. The minolta A mount was i think the first AutoFocus SLR system. Sigma and Tamron do make their lenses in this mount also, so there is a good choice of lenses. Not as wide a same brand lens range as the big two - YET!!. Sony is known to fiercely compete in whatever field it gets in, and its newer lenses are getting a lot of praise. the zeiss 24-70 is supposed to be killer.
