The camera's specs would amaze you but in the real world performance it's kind of letdown.High noise levels spoil the party. Indoor pics without flash seem to have less colours. But the camera comes into its own when it comes to zooming capabilities. The 18x optical zoom is awesome and really helps when you are out there taking landscapes and far-off objects!!

18x Zoom at it's full glory. Some PP has been done.

        At full zoom

        • After a lot of reading , came to the conclusion that a DSLR is not about the body but it's all about the lenses. So I have planned to go for the same brand for both the DSLRs in order to be able to exchange lenses etc. So keeping in mind cost and quality what would you guys recommend .. Nikkor + third party (jumping on to the Nikon bandwagon) or Canon + third party (jumping on to the Canon bandwagon). As I am starting from scratch, I am not worried about the AF option missing from the Nikon body as the AF lenses are said to be very good. So now it's just a decision to go for 2X D60 kit or 2X 450D kit. I see that the quality of the 450D is better than the D60 at full res along with better detail PLUS live view MINUS good exposure control. So is this difference in features worthwhile paying a small premium for the canon and jumping on to the canon bandwagon. ppl who have used both, kindly comment.

theres a lot of chroma noise man along with very very noticeable chromatic aberration. I guess you should lower the zoom level.

You're absolutely right when you say that it's not about the body as much as its about a particular brand (read : lenses, accessories, etc)

When it comes to the D60 and the 450D, I'd definitely go with the 450D, not cause I'm a Canon fanboi, but the 450D is a better camera and it's higher price tag is definitely justified.

              • One dilemma after another, i read on ken rockwell's website that the D40 is the best entry level DSLR and that it really isn't worth spending to upgrade to the D60, I'm in a fix again. Croma no longer sells the D40 and the difference in price is ~6k over the D60.

                what would you guys suggest?

thx man .. but my question was all about which one (read canon or nikon brand) will be a better long time investment (in terms of cost and lens quality/availability) .. the body isn't that imp for me as I will defi upgrade in a couple of years.

                    That's purely subjective man
It's like asking, which bike should I buy? A 'Blade or an R1?
Nikon's great in the mid to high end DSLR market and Canon's good everywhere! (Ok, I'm a Canon fanboi :P)

In terms of cost of lens and the availability factor, its almost equal again. Though the non autofocusing factor of the Nikon entry level bodies on 3rd party lenses puts Canon slightly ahead.

If you were going for a semi pro DSLR (say a 50D/D300), I would have said its 50-50. But in the entry level market, Canon has its nose slightly ahead.

                    • Unless you're a rich guy, go for Canon. Canon lenses are cheaper than their nikon counterparts and have a FAR better range of lenses.

                      • i will prefer the nikon D60 as you knw the reputation of Nikon...and yes the 450d is packed with most of the features found inthe high end dslr's
                        depends upon you!!
                        i would prefer Canon 450d

                        • thx for the responses guys .. will keep both in front of me and do inky-pinky .. hehe

actually will go with whatever feels good at the moment of purchase as it's more or less even between the 2 brands.

from a long term perspective, there is not too much of a difference in the two brands. While for the past few years Nikon was playing catchup, it has dealt SERIOUS blows with the D3/D300/D700 releases. Lenses make an SLR system and all the semi-pro and pro lenses are there for the taking with both, and if ya saw large prints, you would never be able to tell the brand/lens/body difference.

check the prices of the things that you might buy in the future and then make an informed decision.

Also, even if you are buying one camera as a gift, get both the cameras on the same system so that lenses, flashes, battery grips etc can be shared.
