My bro was asking for a DSLR(and we dont even know the basics of photography and camera's)

so what do you guys suggest? buy a DSLR directly or get a good PS camrea and then upgrade to a DSLR?

Now this is going to be a one time investment.

what option do i have if my budget is between 12-20k for a PS camera with a good zoom?

and whats the cheapest available DSLR?
If you want to buy a DSLR be prepared for the costs you have to incur on lens in future. Since you mentioned it as one time investment better get a Good PS camera.

Best PS camera will be Panasonic lumix DMC FZ 28. (18k WITH ONE YEAR VENDOR WARRANTY)

Other decent zoom cameras would be Sony H50 and canon SX10IS

The cheapest available DSLR AFAIK is Nikon D40 and canon 1000D(will be out of the price you mentioned though).

FZ28 has been now replaced by FZ35. Can someone please shed some info about the pricing of this here in India? 'cos in US its priced same as FZ28.

      • I'm looking to buy a super zoom camera. I have shortlisted the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS3 and DMC-ZS1. The reviews for both the cameras are good on the internet. Can anybody at xBhp who own these models give me first hand account abt its performance ?

Also can ppl comment on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35K which supersedes the FZ28 ? I couldnt find much reviews abt the FZ35 on the internet. The FZ35 cost abt 30$ more than the ZS3 and so would it be wise to go for this instead ?

Thanks in advance for all your comments.

        • Got FZ35 2 days ago at 336$ from amazon, now available at 323$ - 328$ in other stores. Thats 16K in INR
Can we get warranty or service for same in india ?

Anyone using FZ35 here? How close does it go to DSLRs if at all. How good is it for travel photography.

          • ok I am down to Lumix FZ35/38 as of now, but I wanted an entry level DSLR, with a budget constraint of 25K... dont want to go for D40 or 1000D.. so i am left with Sony Alpha A230 (pls suggest any other in same range)..
So anyone advise as to how Sony stands as a DSLR compared to say a 1000D and is it worth spending the extra money over Lumix.

PS: I hav no intentions to buy exrtra lenses.

            • @Aman: Any particular reason why you don't want to go in for the D40 (Nikon) or the 1000D (Canon)?

Anyhow, since you have already mentioned, you do not want to go in for any extra lenses, my opinion is that a digital camera would be way better for you than a D-SLR. Because, frankly, buying a D-SLR and not getting good lenses will be like paralyzing it!
              :)

I was expecting this answer while writing "PS"... !

So where does a "paralyzed" Sony A230 stand amongst all ?

PS: D40: too outdated; 1000D: Friend has it!

                          • If you are looking for a non-DLSR megazoom, look no further than the Canon SX10IS, SX20IS or the SX1IS. Best camera in its segment - and great stepping stone before you start playing around with DSLR's.
Has optical zoom of 20x +, 0mm macro and hot shoe for that expeed flash units. This is more than enough for a hobby photographer who does not want the hassles of owning a DSLR and additional lens units.
Prices range from Rs.20,000 to Rs.25000 for these models.

No non-DSLR camera will be able to match up to DSLR image quality levels, because the image sensor will be much smaller than DSLR - hence affecting quality and depth of field.

And if you want to buy a DSLR (with intention of becoming a serious hobbyist or pro) and have money to spare, go for the entry level full frame model like the Canon EOS 5D.

                            • ^^ Isn't Lumix FZ35 on par with Canon SX20IS..?

n 5D!!! no way man... there are many below it I can consider if my budget is that high!

                              Nobody's commenting on Sony Alpha A230 ?!?!?

The Lumix has better optics than the SX20IS, but that is all there is to it, IMHO. Canon has probably the best service in India too. I used to be a Nikon fan, but Canon changed that, at least in India.

I was recommending 5D only if one was to go serious hobbying or pro. Otherwise, you are right - there are many cameras below that. But a full frame is a full frame...
