    • Guys I am planning to buy a DSLR but i am really confused between the Nikon D90/D5000 with kit lens and the Canon 500D Rebel T1i. Should i go with the kit lens or should i buy the Nikon/Canon with 18-200mm lens. I have shortlisted only these cams because they have video recording feature too. I know even the Canon 5D Mark II has it but it's out of question due to budget constraints.

you havent mentioned your exact budget...

But if it is not a big issue(i am assuming that since you are also planning to get the 800$ 18-200mm also) and if you are an enthusiast photographer, i wud say pay the extra 300$ and go for the Nikon D90 instead of the D5000.

That is the best nikon out there now that hits the sweet spot between performance and price.

Both D5k and D90 have the same Sensor and same AF performance.
And continuous shooting speeds are almost same. 4fps vs 4.5fps

        But D90
1)has a proper pentaprism viewfinder that is brighter and bigger.
(some say this alone is worth the price difference)
2)The LCD display is crisp high definition (920k dots instead of 230k).
3)It has built in flash commander if you ever want to try flash photography.
4)has a builtin AF motor so that if you plan to get more lenses, it will help save money, coz you can buy cheaper AF lenses.(instead of AFS with builtin motor)
        eg: 50mm 1.4G AF - 120$
        50mm 1.4G AFS - 440$

5)More 'hard buttons' and external controls and overall better built
6)The kit lenses on both are very good.
But D90 comes with the 18-105mm. So maybe you can go without the 18-200 altogether.

And D90 is only a tad bigger and heavier than D5k.

Others might be able to fill you in on the Canon model.
I heard that image quality of the D90 is better, but live view AF and video is better on T1i?

        • High End Digital Cameras

          Hi Gurus,

I am planning to buy a high end digital zoom camera. I saw a few in the web and liked the Canon SX20. Is it good? Or is there any better camera in the same range? I am going to get it from US and my budget is 375$ to 400$.

Anyhow, since you have already mentioned, you do not want to go in for any extra lenses, my opinion is that a digital camera would be way better for you than a D-SLR. Because, frankly, buying a D-SLR and not getting good lenses will be like paralyzing it!

I was recommending 5D only if one was to go serious hobbying or pro. Otherwise, you are right - there are many cameras below that. But a full frame is a full frame...
got the Panasonic Lumix FZ35, a week ago.. got a good deal from a chennai based shopping portal.. 18.5K.. exploring!

My friend got the SX20IS.The image quality is good and it also has superb HD video recording. The only thing we hate about it is that it uses 4 AA batteries. It cost about 30k.In the same range you can also try the Sony HX-1 which costs roughly the same.

Thats a nice comparo jeevs.. thanks for that because one of my friends also were also skeptical about all those models.. Your post helped for sure

But I have a question, If he were to chose between EOS500D or D5000 which one is better?

Hey thanks jeevs for the beautiful review... but i zeroed in on the Canon 500D with 18-55mm IS kit lens and 55-250mm IS tele. Great cam i must say... i know the size of sensor on D90 is bigger than the 500D, but though smaller it has a 15.1MP sensor so that kinda compensates for me and the 3" 920,000 dot screen is purely awesome for the price at which it is offered.

Here is sample shot of the 500D taken with the kit lens.
