Re: The Rise of the Underdog.. Unicorn Dazzler (Banshee !! The Wailing Spirit)

So the next day I went for some Speed Runs, It was awesome...
The response was just super sexy.. literally in a different league.
But the starting issue, was too prominent... Now the thing is, The Stock Carb, had a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Joel, had asked to keep the TPS locked at max. My mech, didnt wanna do that. He said, keeping an Advanced timing, all the time.. that won't be much fun. He said, that Give me sometime. I will consult and think over it.

But, I was back at his garage the next day itself. The carb was awesome, but the starting prob had to be resolved. It was just not gonna work that way. (My battery would drain within a week, if that continued :P )
    We started looking for options.
    1) RE350 Carb : Didnt work
    2) Somehow sourced a Piaggio carb: Didnt work
    3) Old Eliminator's Semi Flat Carb: Didnt work
    4) Rx135 Carb: :P Oh well.. had to temporarily use it for 2 days.. as the bike didnt have any starting troubles with it.

Now the entire concentration shifted to getting a proper carb.
Juned Bhai, called in 2 of his other Friends (Other Garage Owners, and also a Hardik bhai aka Mastermind Automobile Engineer)..
1st they tried to sort the issue with the 2stroke carb.. the main prob was the pilot jet. It was not sending in enough fuel for the engine to startup at one crank. It was too small. Sadly, there was no way of getting jets for that Carb. We tried other similar pilot jets, but they just didnt work in synchro with that carb.
We had to drop the Idea of using that carb.

Now the Carb issue had become so stretched that, we were pulling off late nighters.. (till 1:30 - 2:00 am) at his garage. Infact, a complaint was registered against my Mechanic, for "Disturbance" late at night.. by a near by resident. (which was later on resolved with ease).
Now, here's the part, where I praise my Mechanic.

Just for this Carb tuning, Juned bhai & his associates /friends.. had spent nearly 68 hours by now. (Yes I was just keeping a tab). He used to start work around 7-8 pm.. pulling till 00:00 am at the least. and this continued for days together. The reason I praise Juned bhai so much is, coz he has a willingness to work, to learn & to get things done. He does work for the money.. but not in the cases where he has a chance to learn, where he has a relation. My bike, has been in his able hands, since 3rd Free Service ( ya i didnt even go to Honda Svc, for the free service :P ).. Every single thing was worked by him. Everytime... When my K&N was damaged, me & my frnd had pushed the bike till his garage (approx 9 kms).. But that is the smallest distance, as compared to what I will say in a later post.

So, 68 hours it was already. Finally we sourced a new RE500 carb.. VM28 , and that was plonked in. Yes, the bike seemed to start up well. And respond well. But it was still not getting enough fuel. Jetting was needed.
It was again hard to find jets. My city Ahmedabad, is a hell hole for modification.. nothing is available that easy. But as I said, when I had Juned bhai.. I had nothing to worry. he took the stock jets of the RE500 carb.. and went out to the market.. as he couldnt find it, he went to the 4 wheeler spares shop.. There he found jets, with similar treads Smaller in size though, but they could be resized. so he got a bunch of them.
A well deserved Break in between...

He didnt have Automated drills for the main jets.. but he did have manual drill (ya with his own hands)..
Step by step, he kept on increasing the Jet size. When one jet size seemed working fine, that was kept aside another one was taken & the size was increased further. They were swapped alternately, just so that we always had 1 main jet, that would work fine.
The swapping of jets, and setting of the float pin on this RE carb.. 7 times..
This carb was removed & again attached 7 times. to get the perfect setting.
In total.. just for carb tuning, Juned bhai had removed the carb for a total of 23 times, and I aint counting the no. of time he opened the top of the carb, while it was fitted, just to change the float pin level.

A total of whoooping 87 hours was spent on Carb Tuning.
    that was no joke.
Still, 1 major hassle remained. "TPS"... leave no doubts, Juned bhai.. wouldnt leave it just like that. He asked me to come 2moro in the evening only. The reason is, for the past 11 days, since the exhaust and parts were installed. I was myself spending the entire day at the garage, from morning 11:00 till the garage closed. I helped as much as I could. But I never let Juned bhai feel that, he was just working on a random bike. Many ppl come to him for modding their bikes. But they just visit him once a day.. I never let him feel that. Between me & him, it has always been like.. Me , learning from an elder brother(him).

Next day, I arrived in the afternoon.. Juned bhai sourced the throttle cable of old Cbz.. apparently, the older cbz had dual cables. We had to remove the Quick Throttle temporarily.. as it would require further modification to the cable. Anyway, i was fine with it..
So, got it removed.. now began the brain storming process, of how & where would he put the TPS .. and more importantly, he had to make it work in complete synchronization to the Carb. The Float should open full & the tps should be at max, when the throttle was full. Did he achieve it??? Yes he did.

I don't have the pic of the current TPS setup.. but he made 3 prototypes of it..
    this is the first one..
I will try and take a pic of the current TPS soon, and show you. Till then, here's a pic:

Thats the way he had set it up. He had managed to use the Throttle body of another carb, fit it on to the tps, and now both were working Together.
    here is a video:

Yes, indeed.. I and even Xeno were all in appraisal of him. He is not literate. He was a Foreman @ Yamaha quite a while back. Then left it, worked at another garage & then started his own. (that has also been 10-12 years). If only ppl like him had the opportunity to study, they would have been able to do a lot..
Plus, no one will believe it but.. for everything that I have mentioned till now.i.e After getting the Parts from Indonesia.
The total amount that he took from me, including The new Carb cost, spares, Jets, Labor etc etc was ₹ 6200... Out of which 3500 was the cost of the carb itself. and Spare surely costed around 1000 or so. For all the hours of hardwork he had put in, he charged just around 1500.
I really can't express, how much hard work he had put in, If you.. after reading all of the above, still feel that I was charged properly / more. It was far far less than the effort put in.
It has always been such in his case.. whenever I tell him, why so less.. his simplest answer "Tumse Zyada lunga, toh upar wale Khuda ko kya jawab dunga?"

Hats off to him.. Mr Juned Shaikh.. (Oh btw, this year.. Raid-De-Himalaya.. the Impulse that came 2nd, was tuned by him.. ) here's a pic:

The guy in the stripped Shirt is Mr. Juned Shaikh, Besides him, Mr. Rajesh (2nd Position @ Raid-de-Himalaya), and finally Mr. Moin Shaikh (Juned's brother)

Dude, let me assure you that you are doing an great service to all of us. I for one am hooked and want to know as much about carb as possible. And man the tuning is perfect, not even a single note of exhaust pop... Your mech is a true expert.

I think people here do not know what your bike is capable of. Post the video which shows 0-60 in 3.5 sec... that too before the proper tune.
That timing is even better than a P200NS.

For a humble commuter like the Dazzler, those performance figures are statistic shattering... In front of what your bike does I think so many other modification threads in this section are a ****ing joke. You are an asset the kind of which xBHP lacks sorely. I too hope people take notice, but if they do not then it is my request for you to kindly continue.

Re: The Rise of the Underdog.. Unicorn Dazzler (Banshee !! The Wailing Spirit)

Well, I forgot to mention.. In betn all this, I also got my tires changed. Both, front & rear.
        Front MRF Zapper FS
Rear Contigo (Same treads as CBR250, just 100/90-17)

Well, After all this hassle, The bike was finally ready.. and boy-o-boy.. was it unbelievable. We got the Quick Throttle Reinstalled after some modifications to it.
And then, We went out for a Speed Test.. And yeee hawww.. the best indeed.. Check this out.

Yes, that is my bike.. and that was the final outcome..
Happy as hell i was. .this bike was killing nearly everything, in the terms of accelration. Top end that i reached was 136 kph. And mind it, the video is with a 93kg rider.. aka Me..

But, this is not the happy ending of the story. A little bit more to come. but not today.

Now lets get a tally, on all the expenses till now:

        1) K&N Rc1060- ₹1900 (Sold for ₹1500)
        2) K&N R1100- ₹2600
        3) NGK Ix- ₹550 x 2 (had changed again)
        4) Sprocket Set- ₹675
        5) Exhaust- ₹1800
        6) Bigbore 160cc- ₹6500 + shipping
        7) 2nd K&N R1100- ₹2150 (Chor bazar zindabad )
        8) Bigbore 180cc- ₹6500 + shipping
        9) CamShaft + Headwork- ₹7500
        10) Tires- ₹1950
        11) Quick Throttle- ₹1450 (Yes, chunna lag gaya tha.. got screwed :P )
        12) R9 Mugello Exhaust
        13) BRT CDI
        14) Protec TCI Coil
        15) 9Power Current Amplifier
        combined 12-15: ₹28500
        16) Tires: ₹5500 (front & rear)
        17) RE500 Carb: ₹3500

I have excluded: Juned Bhai's payments over the years., Spares, Misc expenses.
If you calculate it... it would equal, infact exceed my bike's cost. But now the question is, would I be termed as crazy, or passionate. I leave that judgement to you. I never had the option of buying a bigger bike. 150cc was the limit, and nothing exceeding 70k (at the time of purchase of the bike). For what I chose, and what I made of it.. I am damn satisfied

Hey man, thanks a lot for your awesome words
I wouldn't consider anyone else's mods or hardwork to be worse than mine.. but yes.. would definitely love ppl to read what I have experienced and learnt. How me & My bike have grown together.

Well, About the video, its right above I can't exactly say its not the porper tune. It was the proper tune. But ya, the Starting problem was still existing, just way too less. 2-4 cranks.. or just 1 single..LONG press of the ignition.

There are more videos of acceleration. This is the best timing that I had recorded of them all. I will also try and upload the same video as above.. just from a different angle (Gopro Chestmount on a duke200)

And don't worry.. i will complete my story

Man you are amazing, your determination and dedication has paid up. After reading your thread i am also thinking of getting a big bore installed. However, i am never a fan of loud exhaust, so it will be big bore kit, head work and cam for my extreme. Let see i have some plans for my extreme, but let see what time permits. I am waiting for next year when i will be transferred back to home, and then all the crazy work will start. But the problem is that once something strikes my mind, i will not leave it till i complete it, and if i start experiment with the extreme then i fear i will be kicked out of home, so i am in two minds regarding what to do. But your post have again ignited the fire to mod the engine of my extreme.

And yes, Juned bhai deserves all the praise that he gets..

Just writing up the next part now..

                                THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR:

For those who are not aware, what it is.. Throttle position sensor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So, as I had mentioned Earlier, setting up the TPS was the biggest issue, when we decided to go for a different CARB. Joel had suggested, to lock the TPS at max. Which does work, but the exhaust pops every now & then. :P Having an advanced timing all the time, wasn't what my mechanic wanted for my bike. Hence the following...

Let me mention again, the pic / vid that I have posted earlier, was Version 1 of the 3 prototypes of TPS. Today I am gonna show you the final version 3.

Let us first see, how a stock TPS looks like (Not on my bike's carb.. I will show just a random pic from the internet. It's similar.)

So, the carb that was put to use for my bike, was the Mikuni VM28 RoundSlide Carb.. (For Complete Breakdown of the Carb: Mikuni VM and TM Carb Tuning Info, Main Jets, Needle Jets, and Needles

First an Image of the Setup (Without any throttle input)

Now, without me writing a long long explanation. I am just gonna share a Video. I will just mention one thing that I forgot to mention in the Video. The TPS, has been attached to a Point on the chassis, which was actually used to keep the AirBox in place. With that said, Here's the Video:

So that is the ingenuity of my mech, Mr. Juned Shaikh..
If there are any more questions. please feel free to ask

Another wonderful mod, the credit for which goes to Juned Bhai again.. Is a "Jugad for Clutch Springs"..
Since, Dazzler doesn't have any aftermarket option to get Stiffer Clutch Springs, atleast not in my City, (And the one's that are available for the CRF150F, are too expensive). What Juned Bhai did is, opened up the cover, took out the clutch plates & the pressure plates.. and searched for another pressure plate, which of the same size (in diameter).. one that can be added as an additional pressure plate, hence automatically making the springs stiffer. The Extra pressure plate was installed between the 3rd & 4th Clutch Plates.. and trust me, the difference in throttle response in each gear, was definitely visible. I am sure, if not much.. but it definitely helped in reducing some Slippage.
