  • TVS Showroom 1st and last visit

    Hello,

An interesting incident that took place today Its a bit lengthy but interesting.
As I am looking to buy a new bike for myself, I went to the TVS Motor Company's showroom named, Guru Nanak TVS in Amritsar.today to have a test ride of their Apache RTR 180cc ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) version bike. Here is the conversation that happened there. I am translating this in English for most of the friends to understand (actual conversation was in Punjabi)

Executive 1: Hello sir, how can I help you?
Me: I am looking for a test ride of your Apache 180 with ABS
Executive 1: Have a seat sir.
(I sat opposite him with Executive 2 sitting beside him, doing some paper work)
Executive 1: Sir, when are you planning to buy the bike?
    Me: Within 2 weeks.
Executive 1: Ok, actually sir, the person who assists in test rides is not here right now so the test ride can not be conducted.

Me: (with obvious surprise on my face) When he is going to be around?

Executive 1: It'll take time sir. (his expressions said, "No Test Ride.")
Me: Look, I have come from very far to this TVS showroom, apart from the newly opened one (the owner is same though), where I had just gone and was directed to this showroom as they did not have the Apache 180 ABS bike with them for test ride.

Executive 1: Oh, you have come from that showroom. Sir, wait for 2 minutes.

Executive 1 whispered to Executive 2: He has come from that showroom, we should arrange test ride.
Executive 2 said something back which I could not hear.

Executive 1 to an employee (middle aged man in t-shirt and pants with Slippers on his feet): He has come for a test ride of Apache 180. The employee nodded and went in the direction where he was already going.

After a while he came back and said to Executive 1 "Ask him (some other
    employee) about petrol."
    Executive 1: You ask!
Employee: Ask Vikas (not remember what he actually called him) to ask him about petrol.
Executive 1: Go and ask him, he is going out!
Employee went after someone which I did not turn back to see who he was and again came back telling someone else to ask about petrol.

In my mind I was like.... What the hell is going on??!! I am waiting for a test ride and they are deciding about petrol to fill in the bike.

The employee came back and stood near a row of RTR Apaches and asked
Executive 2: Which one? (which one is RTR Apche 180cc)
Executive 2: 180 (I was wondering all the time)

Employee, standing with his hand over an Apache bike, to me: Sir, which colour do you like? ( I was like what in the world colour has to do with a test ride of the bike??)
Me: Colour doesn't matter. Just take an Apache RTR 180 with ABS.
The employee nodded and went away. I noticed that the bike on which he stood keeping his hand was a non ABS version ( as ABS was not mentioned on the side of the bike)

Me to Executive 2: Is this a 180 ABS version? (now here comes bomb)
Executive 2: No sir its 180 and its the same.
Me: How come it is same?
Executive 2: Sir, it is same like the ABS version when you drive it.
Me: But its not same when you stop it! Is it?
Executive 2 smiled and looked towards me as if I was joking and said, "Its same sir."
I said I want a test ride of Apache 180 with ABS as I wanted to see how ABS work.

Employee 2 said, " Tell me if you want a test ride of this or not." I was shocked at his behaviour and response and I said of course I don't want a test ride of this non-ABS version. He immediately shouted at the person who had gone to ask for petrol, "Come back, he doesn't want to take a test ride!"

    I was like "How Pathetic!"

Employee 1 came back and asked me why I did not want the test ride now and I explained that I want it with ABS. He said they don't have that bike with them. (I was feeling irritated and was thinking why on first place they could not tell me this)
I asked them when I could expect it for a test ride and you know what he said?
He said, sir you can book the bike and then we can arrange it here. At that moment I felt like getting up immediately, never to go back to that place again. I mean you are telling me to book a bike for buying and then take a test ride?!! Have you lost it completely??
I explained to them that as far as I know TVS is the first Indian manufacturer to have introduced ABS in their bike for extra safety and for that particular reason I came to take a test ride of this particular model while making a decision to buy a new bike and you are telling me that ABS and non ABS version are same in riding!
he said, "Sir its upto you to decide."
I asked them to give me a call if at all it becomes available within two weeks for a test ride. With almost no interest at all he finally did what I said and noted my contact number. A BIG NO for the TVS Motor Company showroom Guru Nanak TVS, Putlighar, Amritsar from now on!

    --END--

If this is the way TVS is going to treat its customers then Almighty knows where they are heading.

    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Most regular dealers are apathetic to the customer.

      Two experiences I remember
Hero showroom - Gurgaon :: I wanted a TD of the Impulse. Now here is the zinger! The advisor didn't even know what the Impulse was!! Finally, when a dusty TD bike was taken out of the yard he said "Seat toh bahut lambi hai iski" (The seat is very long)
Honda Showroom-Gurgaon :: Wifey wanted to TD the Activa-i. The advisor simply said - "Madam please book it. You can take the test drive before delivery" !

The only responsive people I have seen are the probiking guys.

Great! I wonder how hard this impact is on the company's reputation. I also wonder what heights they would achieve if their salesmen/executives are educated on the topic. At least they should know what they are selling, technically and aesthetically.

Heads up for that. My experience at Hero Honda was same. Back in 2007 My dad and I went to get Karizma and the guy was hell bent on selling Splendor (or was it Super Splendor?) and CBZ Extreme to us and they went as far as saying Karizma is a dangerous bike and is dangerously fast. Due to its exteme power, they dont give test rides .

The Bajaj Probiking guys were so much nicer. They arranged for a test ride and were enthusiastic in selling the new Pulsar twins back then. Even in present time the Bajaj guys were so nice to arrange a Test ride of Z800 for me and when I first went for the D390 test ride, they happily handed over the key to me and said "Sir, ek baar test ride le loge na, toh book kara ke hee jaoge, itni pyari bike hai yeh" (Sir once you test ride this bike, you are gonna book it for sure, this bike is that good) and they were not wrong .

If this is the attitude even before you purchase the bike, I wonder what would happen afterwards!
You should send a mail to TVS mentioning this conversation. Little would change but still.

Faced the same situation when I had bought my RTR back in 2009. I called the Area Manager and Test ride was arranged in minutes. Its the consequence of hiring ignorant people at low salary.
Also faced the same situation while checking the ZMA and Unicorn that time, Though I didnt bothered them much, as I already had ridden my friend's bikes.
But seriously, whenever I visit a Bajaj or Yamaha showroom to ride any bike, they seem really eager.
Good decision not to buy from them.

This is exactly what I thought too that buying from them would be like jumping into an abyss.

I hope common sense prevails and we get better people at sales and customer relations in future.

Hahaha.. same incident with me back in 2010 before i booked my Karizma.. my dad was damn adamant not to get me a faired bike.. he said get a small bike within 150cc. Somehow convinced him to get me Apache 180.. after searching through net for nearest TVS showroom, found one in South Delhi near MG road.

Mom, dad and i went to the showroom and the way they treated us was as if we are animals.. i asked for a test ride of A180 and they brought out 160 and said you can test ride this. When dad asked is it the same. They said yes sir, just 20 cc less.. i was like WTF.. then my dad was asking for dark grey and those guys were convincing my dad to take a white. My dad was like thanks for the welcomed treatment. We got out and booked my Karizma as they treated us well in Hero showroom

Man, the TVS world seems to be full of these morons. Good thing you did by going with Karizma. Why don't they understand that misleading/ill treating a customer goes a long way in ruining their reputation.

The fact is. They think they are kings. Just because they work in a motoe showroom.. they know each and every part of a bike while the customers are noob...

I didnt tell the other part of my story before i purchased my Karizma..

Well.. we left TVS showroom and nearby there were few more showrooms. Bajaj, yamaha, RE and Hero Honda (2010 it was hero honda)

I am no fan of RE amd hence immediately after my dad said RE, i said No..

Then Bajaj.. i had a bad experience with Bajaj product P180 so i backed off and so did my dad..

I already had a Karizma before moving to New Delhi, so dad was like i kmow how you ride so no big bike.. he liked Xtreme much and then the Hunk. Hunk we already have back in chennai so he said no to it.. he said we will come back if we dont find any other good bike..

Then we went to Yamaha.. they treated us we there.. no doubt. But according to them, the customer knows nothing about bike and its mechanism and whatever they say, the customer will believe blindfolded..

My dad was inclined towards the Fazer and FZ-S.. i was looking at R15 where my mind was all towards the yellow R15.. my dad asked them about R15 and those fools claimed it touches 155 kmph and my dad was like a big NO NO to it.. he said Reneav, look at this lovely bike Fazer.. i was like WHAAAAAT??

Ok. I guess i was going to settle down with Fazer as my dad wasnt convinced when i said R15 will hardly touch 130 kmph and these guys are bluffing.. then when my dad asked about the specifications of Fazer.. the guy explained 150cc and he gave the wrong bhp figures (i dont remember how much) and he said this bike has FI.. I was like "Are you serious" he said yes sir and when asked to show the fuel pump and fuel injector. That retard showed me the carburetor. I explained to dad these guys know nothing and it is better we go to Hero Showroom..

We went to Hero showroom and just when dad was going to book the Red/black Xtreme, i convinced him into booking me a Black shiny Karizma.. the guys at the showroom were so kind that my dad got convinced by me so easily (difficult to convince my dad).

Booked my Karizma on the 20th of Feb 2010 and went home happily.. the next day i went to select the bike. There were some 4 black Karizmas standing in the store room. I made sure i selected the latest manufactured bike..

To my bad luck, there was knocking sounds from the engine so i decided to select another bike and went home.. oh yes. I forgot to mention about the 2 ZMRs standing in the showroom and i just couldnt take my eyes off of them.. somehow dad got convinced after seeing the ZMR and he paid full cash (my savings from salary paid some extra 20000 from his pocket) and surprised me when i went to taie the delivery..

Well.. it was me who convinced my dad. It was the showroom guys. They exclaimed how much i loved the ZMR and how much I admired it
Again, dad got so much convinced by the way the sales guys treated him he didnt mind paying some extra to get me ZMR..

Why I am explaining this is, the treatment the customer gets is what is going to decide the fate of the product.. be it before sales or after sales

Hope officials at TVS are reading this.

This is simply not acceptable for a company's point of view where they are bound to maintain customer delight right from the Pre-sales stage to Closure of the sales. Irony is that this has happened in north india, where TVS doesnt have a strong foothold in terms of sales.
