It would have been great if they had centralised the taxes making sure that nothing of the pondy sham sorts happens again. Rather than asking you to pay taxes at every state you visit.

I have a query. Was gonna start a new thread but thought wise to ask here first.

Whats the current scenario about number plates ? I mean i know that high security number plates came into picture ( the ones with India hologram ) but i dont see them being implemented at many places. I myself have the normal ( white background black font ) number plate here in Karnataka but my friends in Chandigarh told that it has become mandatory there and a friend got fined heavily for not having the IND number plate.

SO whats the situation, and the safest bet ? I'll be passing through different states in July, and want to avoid such hassles.
Please advise

There is no yearly road tax in Karnataka. Only lifetime.
Also the 'grace period' is just one month. (They made this change in feb 2014)

Just downloaded the lates kmv act, still says 6 months and ther is option of 1 year and life time tax. There is no other options availbe there. Please check the karnataka rto web site.

do not let the local rto take you for a ride. Carry a print of kmv and ask them refrence for section.

In bangalore, you gp to the rto that services your area. Then got to the help/information counter and let them know your in bangalore for a period >6momths but <1 year and need to pay tax for 1 year. They will give you a form (dont remember the number). You need to fill it in attach copy of you rc book, insurance and pollution clearance certificate. Make payment in d or cash favouring the rto.


The recipt will be having clear discreption that road tax is paid for certian period amd the amount.

Noc will not void regestration, its a mere statement that the local rto has no objection for transfer of regestratiom from one state to another within a period of 6months.

If your moving to another stater for a period of not exeecding 12 months then as per central mv act you do not need any noc or road taxe pay,ent. But still read the local state mv there may be over riding clause like in karnataka its 6 months.

If the period of stay is > 6 months but not perpetual maybe 2 or 3 years then just pay the local life time tax without re registering. So you can then ply freely on both states.

My hyundai sonata was tn reg and also had 60k life time tax paid in karnatak so i never had any issue using it with tn registration in bangalore.

Hi Harish,

Could you please include the details the procedure to pay tax in Karnataka for other state vehicles without changing the initial registration number. Also, I remember having seen somewhere that it is possible to pay "yearly" tax for out-of state vehicles in Karnataka, could you please confirm.

Hey guys, need some help here

I have an R15, registered in AP. I have been working in Hyderabad for the last 3 years. Now I will be moving to Pune for the next two years for further studies, and I want to take my bike with me (my bike has somehow become very close to me over these 3 years ).

I have done some research, and am getting mixed views. I initially checked with an agent on the process to get an NOC, and he told me it is a waste to get an NOC for a period of two years, and then go and pay life tax in Maharashtra, when I will be returning again after 2 years. He asked me to take the bike as it is, use it, and get it back.

Guys from the college are of the same opinion, get the bike here, use it, and take it back, as getting the NOC+paying life tax in Pune could be quite costly for a two year affair.

My queries are as follows :

1) If I do take an NOC, does it make my registration in AP null and void? Or can I ride my bike there for 2 years, and come back and use it in AP w/o any hassles?
2) Can I take my bike to MH, and ride it there safely for 2 years if I just pay the tax there (I trust I will have to pay life tax. Or can I pay tax according to the duration of my stay?)
3) If I take the NOC from here, do we require multiple trips to the RTO in the other state to get the tax issue cleared? Asking this as I doubt if I will get time from Mon-Sat.
4) Considering my period of stay there (2 years), what do you suggest?

HI mate.

Don't take NOC. Once NOC is issued the registration in AP in void. And you have to register bike in Pune . And at the time of moving back have to take NOC from Pune .

What u should do is bring the bike and pay the road tax which will not be much. 5 or 6k. The road tax for private vehicle are always life time.

I have recently paid RT for a Gujrat registered Pulsar 150 1 year old and RT we paid is 5.6 k.

This will enable you to bring the bike back in Maharashtra any time in future after return to AP.

Hi guys,

Finally found the thread.
I own an AP registered Yamaha FZ-S red & silver and I have been using this in chennai(TN) for the past 2years. I did apply for a NOC when I transported the bike here. I am aware that an NOC only has a validity of 6 months and after the validity we can get it extended to 6 more months. I didnot get the NOC extended nor got it registered here in chennai or TN.(due to lack of information then). I tried contacting a few brokers here in chennai who were only trying to encash the situation I am in.
My question here is, where is my bike registered to now and what should be the process if I have to take it back to Hyderabad(AP). When I checked the details in the RTA AP site, the bike is registered to AP but the registration authority is mentioned as Chennai.

For your bike it'd be 10% of the ex-showroom price (and ~6% depreciation per year)

Thanks for the response. Could you please help me with any documents or links where I can get some more information. My bike is a CBR 250 ABS version. Any idea how much tax I will have to pay? I don't have much knowledge about these taxes and processes.

Technically, yes. You'll have to pay the lifetime road tax and re-register the bike in Karnataka.

Recently the Karnataka govt. changed the 'grace period' of inter-state vehicles in Karnataka from 11 months to 1 month. The RTO officials were seizing the vehicles/RC/DL of those who had not paid the LTT at various parts in the city. There were also reports of harassment by the RTO officials like tearing up of the toll receipts etc. Apparently they were bothered only about the LTT and didn't bother anything about the registration. Also heard that this was done to meet the year end targets and things have subdued after March 31st.

Have some questions for transporting my bike from New Delhi to Bangalore

Hello guys!

I live in New Delhi and might relocate to Bangalore due to my job. I would have to relocate for 1.5 years or maximum 2 years. I want to take my bike to Bangalore with me but a few of my friends told me that I will have to transfer the registration of my bike to Karnataka transport authority from Delhi. They told that I can't ride my bike in Bangalore or anywhere in Karnataka due to this for such a long period and it is mandatory to transfer. Is this true? If yes, what is the procedure for this? (Any link which mentions the procedure and the cost would be appreciated).
