How to counter crosswinds on highway rides??
hey guys, i had a very bad experience riding my Apache on Sunday night on NH-4 while riding back from Chennai to my home town Vellore...I was always getting off balanced whenever there was a heavy crosswinds..At a point it became very scary to ride even at 80 kmph...Now that its the time of the year where there are rains in most part of the country these kind of strong winds would be prevail ant everywhere i guess... so i need your Inputs on how to counter crosswinds and have a safe ride...1986 SUZUKI AX100R

very good topic ..but idont think that we can do anything ..
there was a time when i had to face head on winds and it was so strong that my bike RTR couldnt cross 80
well in case of cross winds i lean towards the wind thats itFACEBOOK

1. Buy a more aerodynamic bike (eg: R15 or the 220, the 220 is not aerodynamic but holds well in crosswinds than other bikes)
2. Become god and control the weather

Ride slow.
The higher your speed the more you are prone to get caught in the cross winds. If you moving at a higher speed in X/Wind there is a pressure imbalance on the sides. The side from which the X/Winds are coming builts a high pressure area than the opposite side. And this imbalance tends to throw you and your bike off, with more like a lifting force. So, the lesser the speed the less prone you are to fall. Moreover at low speeds you can safely counteract the X/Winds in case they are really strong. Riding slow is the best solution.Enna Rascalla. Riding in crosswinds,220 wins hands down.Originally posted by prafultripathy View Post1. Buy a more aerodynamic bike (eg: R15 or the 220, the 220 is not aerodynamic but holds well in crosswinds than other bikes)

One more option is to enjoy the crosswinds which I generally do.That way the fear automatically goes off & you tend to go with the flow.

i think there should be no way other than leaning towards the windB o D a C i O u S

yes leaning is also good, gripping your bike nicely..
avoid wearing cloths that keep on flapping...

Well...
personally i go in for a trade off between the two.
Enjoy the push and pull but at controlled speeds.
Its like a crazy pillion sitting behind leaning from side to side.

You cant do much in this case. Aerodynamic bikes like the R15 are good for cutting thru air : but in this case, when wind hits you sideways, even these bikes cant help much.

+1 ,for light crosswinds , just hang your knee out , heavy crosswinds , use countersteer to lean in towards the direction of wind.Originally posted by whizzkid_ram View Posti think there should be no way other than leaning towards the windsigpicThe Moto Cafe - India's first bike theme cafe @ Chandni Chowk

Superb topic! Even I was thinking of asking the same thing..
Looking forward to more comments from experienced riders, especially the tourers..
I beg to differ on this..Originally posted by prafultripathy View PostOnly two things can be done:-

Even the R15 is very sensitive to cross-winds (i understand cross winds to blow from left to right, or vice-a-versa)..
& one tends to get quite scared in cross winds on the R15, coz of the high costs involved in the repairs (full fairing na)..
However, with winds blowing front-on, simply put - its pure pleasure to ride the R15..

My views on the YZF-R15 V2.0: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/news/198...tml#post699240
The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

Seriously though, dropping your speed and leaning the bike and your weight a bit towards the direction of the crosswind might help. In serious crosswinds, it's best to move the side and wait for the turbulence to stop.DoN\'t LivE tO DiE, dIe tO LiVe
