Switching off at signals
Time and again I have debated with people on the merits, or lack of thereof, of switching off a bike at a signal. Most people tend to argue that if the bike is off for too short a time then more petrol gets spent in starting the bike again than what wouldve been spent had it been left running. Some people say 10 seconds or shorter doesnt deem switching it off, others say 30 seconds. Personally I always switch it off.

I'm not sure about the science behind this, but i have heard & read that if the stop will last over 60 secs, its better to switch the engine off, as starting the vehicle again will consume less fuel than if the vehicle is left idling for 60 secs or more.. I follow this..
Moreover, I have heard that using the Electric start drinks up more fuel than using the kick start.. Can't follow this, for the lack of kick lever on the R15..

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

I always switch off mine if the signal is for more than 40secs. I follow this because I saw a led thing near some signal in chennai which said "switch off the vehicle if the signal is more than 40secs" Can someone please enlighten us about this? Will frequent switching off and switching on of engine result in some damage to the engine?LiFe Is NoT a BeD oF RoSeS bUt A bEd Of TaRmAC

I tend to switch off the engine at every other point whenever there is a signal or a Jam...or even slow moving traffic. Never did take into consideration the fuel spent while restarting the bike....can any1 enlighten us with this knowledge....sigpicGirls are like roads, more the curves, more the dangerous they are.
To ride or not to ride?? is a....
very very stupid question....

I don't think its gonna help in much way as the vehicle in idle is not going to consume much petrol....they ask ppl to switch off mabbe to reduce the pollution and stop guys from throttling unnecessarily.....I have seen certain ppl arnd my place who do that.......then again in places like bangalore where signals run a minimum of 1-2 mins and there is a long line in front, then it is btr to switch off

I use the engine kill switch-(yes, thats what its meant for)&switch off the engine for signals for 30 secs.signals&beyond. Less than that doesn't make sense to me as I feel the amount of fuel that flows in while starting would be more or less equal to the 10-15 second idle period consumption.
FYI: For cars its about 100ml. per 10 mins.of idling. Maybe OF Sir or some other senior person can throw more light on how much fuel bikes consume on idling.
I feel this has more to do with pollution&also wastage of fuel coz people tend to keep revving the engine to stop it from dying down (I donno why they can't set the idle speed) at signals. So even a drop saved by a million people in a day means a lot!Quench my thirst with gasoline!

I switch it off when its more than about 60-90 seconds . In blr you have signals with even 140 + seconds :-(.
I turn off mainly becos of the heat , and nothing else , Fan turns on which means load on the battery , which inturn means fuel consumption :-)

I switch off the 220 if its more than 10s wait.
Bullet hardly ever , I enjoy the low rev thump and the vibes along with it. But if the stop is more than 40/50s , yes , I switch it off.
BTW , Why would you ever switch off the bike. Indian bikers are like sand in bottle filled with marbles. in a 60s stop , we take more than 45 seconds to fill up every spot in between the cars and ricks. Switching off for remaining 15 secs doesn't make sense.
