why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear

    I have been driving Ninja for the last 3 days in Pune city, here are some of my experiences. Some of them hilarious, enjoy -
    -On Nagar Road, one chap on a HH splendor was driving at a break neck speed at 25 kms/ hr . On seeing him overtake, he in turn overtook me and started going zig-zag in front of me. At this movement I slowed my speed and he felt he had won the race with Rossi.
    -
    -Some of the people get really confused (especially at the signals) after seeing a person on Green Kwacker wearing a full faced Marushin Helmet, Glover, Lumberjacks shoes and A* Jacket and clocking 40 km/hr. I decided to give a skip to the gloves & the jacket for the time being and will wear them in phased manner so that they get confused slowly!!

    -One of my colleague asked if I had brought the bike for my kid for the future.

    sure bro you don't always get lucky. so need to be prepared. people may laugh at you but at least you know that you're prepared for the unexpected.

    Hey All,

    I agree and in some way enjoy the attention. Many a times I even take the time out to smile back and wish them luck for their unprepared for events.


    I ride an RE TBTS and have done quite a few rides including Off-roading on some of the most difficult Terrains Including Dirt, Gravel, Stones, water, Tough inclines combined in most cases. Learnt my lessons, pretty early in my riding stint. Gears are the most important things on rides.



    Bad Part of the story is here: I did have the gloves and palms where bruised really really bad. It took like a week to get a little close to bearable. Till then I had trouble in simple activities like eating, and obviously lost some weight then. Evan worse was no computers for two days, i hope you'd guess the others i'd love to mention.

    So the first ride after the recovery was to the ATM and closely followed by a sports equipment shop.

    I agree all we can do is prepare for whats to come .... no amount of riding gear can protect you go under the wheel of a truck or something.. The best means of protection is to stay focused on the road and not feel over confident about your gear to get you out safely all the time .....

    about four months later another friend of mine fell at about 60~70 kmph and broke his right leg and couple of toes, left arm, and the middle finger on his right hand. (he was wearing a helmet).
    bro,He was only wearing helmet.The helmet does protect his head.
    Yes luck also plays a part,but preparation definitely help in reducing the after effect of bad luck

    Now that i wear full length glove, Kneepads, jacket and helmet, what can i do more? invest in imported high quality gear. wear riding pant instead of just knee pad, wear riding boots instead of just normal boots. Wear spine protectors and the list goes on and all this for office commuting? may be not.

    What i am trying to say is, Safety gear is like insurance policy, some insure less and some insure more and some dont. There is no substitute for Having presence of mind and some luck when on road.

    a year back i fell off the pillion seat of a fz16 without any gear but survived with only a serious abrasion on the left knee and elbow (nothing broken). later my friend who was riding (he managed to hold unto the bike a little longer and was saved by fz's wide handlebars. he too received some abrasions on his body ) told me that we fell with the speedo reading 116! after that i made a point to wear my helmet and heavy jeans even when riding pillion however much my friend made fun of me. about four months later another friend of mine fell at about 60~70 kmph and broke his right leg and couple of toes, left arm, and the middle finger on his right hand. (he was wearing a helmet).

    So true... and one of the reasons I ride extra carefully when I'm fully geared up and inside city traffic... hehe

    Tips: Some knee guard can be worn inside pants. Mine can. Sometimes I wear it inside, sometimes outside. Depends on my mood.
    If worn outside, wear black pants (for black knee guard). It camouflage it some and invite fewer stares. I do it all the time.

    woha never ride without gear is what i would say who cares about what others think except for the chicks that is this was when i 1st started riding i had a pretty bad fall my helmet crashed into a light pole on the platform if it weren't for the helmet i would have had a pretty scared up face by now.... the knee gaurds one hell of a life saver but one hell of stare ull get for sure...

    Well jokes aside, my Mom says that the time difference between you being right and you being thought as insane for being right is very little.

    The common Indian commuting mentality has hardly moved over Avon and Hero Cycles till date on which if you tumble (and not crash) you end up getting scratches and brusises and going by the "Mard ke seeney main Dard Nahin Hota" philosophy..... it's not a big deal...

    So, when you are right by having a full riding gear on.... people think you are insane because they think how much you are scared of getting those scratches and bruises!! Even people in my office try to laugh me off, when I put on my riding jacket, gloves!!

    So, just show such people your pinky fingure and do what you best do... RIDE!!
