Biking is = commuting in India by and large. Protective gear is at most a cheap helmet at Rs.250/- for most.
Hell...even I don't own a jacket, gloves or knee-pads. Dad will kill me for the cost involved! I do my share of touring though with my Unicorn...and my friends who ride with me don't wear even helmets. I do.

Forget staring, some lidless idiots think that we are trying to be a hero, so they start to irritate you & try to force you into street racing...

I can remember an incident at 2006 -
Me and my fellow bhpian were on the way to chennai track from Hosur on my Unicorn to participate in Ucal Rolon racing, we both were covered with full helmets, leather jackets and gloves with full ankle boots and knee guards. We stopped at a place called ambur at 10.00AM, it was burning hot and once we got down and started removing our riding gears we saw the whole crowd on the streets staring at us as if some aliens landed on earth

I've already narrated some of the incidents I encountered and here's the latest that happened this morning on my way to office. A young chap on a bike was trying to get my attention. Came to know he wanted to know about my knee guards. Quiet a persistent guy by the way, riding besides me asking questions. So I asked him to pull over. Then I gave him the address where I got them. Well besides being the wrong place(traffic) to discuss this, I was at least pleased to know, there is at least one more guy concern about his safety. Even if he is thinking only in terms of it style and thinks it looks cool. Well good. Protections should not only be practical but should also look cool so that it can encourage people to wear them.Leave a comment:

I wear a tintd MPA helmet gloves jackt etc while goin 4 rides, and i have 2 agree every 1 luks at u like u r somesort of a racer. Recently on my long ride to McLeodganj, there were 8 bikes and and all were covered from head to toe without an inch of skin exposed. We all were wrapped in protective gears and I wish i could tell you what kinds of stare did we got there from everyone. It was like we are some models or something. But at last we are getting attention. Who cares what kind of it was.

But I doubt that these guys will learn anything out of this incident . 90% of the fatalities are due to head injuries and road burns comes in 2nd place. My cousin who works in a trauma unit in U.S. says even 10% of road burn on the body can lead to fatality due to complications (meaning; you will buy the farm).

Let us count our blessings that over here we have a group of like minded people who can discuss their passion away from the ignorant masses.
.Instead, they just see as as stunters and show off's. I hope that someday, this will change.

My friend asks- 'Why do you wear helmet and gloves for your old Activa and for short distances?'
That's stupid. It doesn't matter what and where you're riding. If you fall at 50km/h, you'll still get hurt.
It doesn't require a powerful bike to wear safety gear. It's never meant for the bike. It's for the rider.
People should understand this. As xBhp says- the rule zero is to wear a helmet.
