Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear

what a lovely thread to vent some steam off..

I asked my parents to spend about 15k on gears (helmet + glvoes + jacket) they said NO. Why?

"You are going to drive normally.. You are not going to race on the streets.. is that why you got the race bike?? (KTM RC 200)"

and then another comment came up..

"I've been wearing the ISI marked helmet for so many years and nothing happened to me.. nothing happened to you too all this while so go and pick the cheapest helmet you can find"

    and

"Don't buy helmet beyond 1500-2000.. other than that it's your wish; do what you want to do"

and the one dialogue of every parents and the dream-murdering statement:

"Log Kya Kahenge" (what will people say)

come on!!! I'm trying to protect myself.. not race around!! there's not even an race-track to race.. leave alone the unpredictable roads of my glorious city with corrupt babus eating roads!!

All the planning went a waste

I won't do the same thing with my son/daughter in future.. I'll buy the best gear money can buy..

they are like "You've been going all this while fine, now what?? nothing will happen"

I said "Yes, by god's grace nothing happened till now, but let's be safe"

    "whatever, nothing will happen"

and I work the night shift.. come home early in the morning around 4.30 - 5.00 when drunk/sleepy/fast people drive crazy!!

    This makes me mad!!!

People in India think that riding jackets are the same as a winter jacket, that riding shoes are just expensive nike's, that there is no difference between a wrangler helmet bought from the road side and an ARAI bought and imported from USA. It makes me laugh but my own parents have actually said this to me when I wanted a helmet worth 5000/- coz it offered better all round protection than the local stuff and my parents are quite educated and have a high social standing. This is due to the lack of awareness among the masses and the governments unwillingness to do something about it.
And thats why my policy is to tell the smug cops and old uncles and dadajis that I value my life and would rather be alive than good at money management.
completely agree.. atleast in my case i am lucky to have parents and partner who understand that a 100-200$$ gloves jacket or boot is not for the coolness or badass factor but primary utility is safety..

the downside : after using GP plus gloves for 2 years and downgrading to Joe rocket Highside i was literally told by the partner on my face that your hands probably have lost value that you started buying less quality/safety stuff.. i was amazed to hear that and happy too.. wish i can convert more people into the religion of safety.

back to topic : there are old riders and stupid riders... both doesn't exist together. the stupid wont last until he gets old... so let people stare you.. and enjoy that envy...

Hey Bro,, welcome to Nagpur.. As such If you need normal gears, (probiker type), you can go to

    #1"Bombay scooters" at 'yashwant stadium',

#2 "town accessories" at 'central avenue', locally known as CA Road.

If you want some professional biking gears, you can go to "Pioneer Motors ", at wadi. (one and only sports bike and professional accessories shop)

Contact me if need some other help.

You know in the old days people spent money on necessary things not "mahengi shauk Ki cheez" (costly recreational things) like riding gear (obvious sarcasm). Don't let these fools bother you. If cops ask just say "meri jaan mujhe paise se jyada pyari hai" (I value my life more than money).

Re: why do people stare at you when you wear gloves & protective gear

Some tips regarding the cops harassing the fully geared rider:

    1. Carry few pics of some of the normal desi chappal wala commuter who have crashed and sustain injuries/ bruises in your mobile phone. Such pics are widely available on google. Prefer to carry the pics showing bruises or injuries on palms, arms, shoulder (to justify for wearing a riding jacket) and face ( for good quality helmet).

    2. Whenever you are stopped/ questioned by cops for wearing alien looking gears, simply take out your phone and show those pics telling them that a motorcycle is much prone to accident than a car. Build few imaginary stories about a couple of people you know were hurt/ injured in some motorcycle crashes etc. and were admitted in hospitals, their bills etc. and how they could have sustained the injuries as shown in the pics had they were wearing such riding jackets. As the cops are humans and they have a tendency to relate every accident with some one whom they knew, this could be beneficial. You can also add that how a girl next door riding a punny scooty at 20-30 Kmph was hit from behind by a fast vehicle and she got some injuries while it was not her fault.

PS: The story building part depends on your level of imagination and creativity. Apologies for being straight forward.

    3. Allow/ ask them to have a feel/ touch your riding jacket and the armors. Knuckle protector in the riding glove should be shown as well and explain them the benefit of the knuckle protectors and all the riding gears. Tell them that yes these are costly but spending 5-6 thousand for protection is better than spending 50 thousand and 10 days in hospital.

#The above mentioned points are tried and tested with a Pulsar and a Ninja 250 at Airoli check naka and at EEH-Mulund check naka (Mumbai).

Protective gear is compulsory in India but who cares here about the rules.
The biggest joke is if you wear all appropriate gear and ride a fast bike chances are you'll get a lecture about road safety from a "lichchad" wearing chappal and cap riding a crappy bike with no brakes (unbelievable? Believe it).
