and abt the desoldring part ...!! i guess u can get it done by any good cellphone repair shop guy since they generally have all the desoldering equipment ..!! and if im not wrong the led's used in mobile phones keypads for lighting are pretty similar so they will know a thing or two abt soldering and desoldering such minature led's !! so may be for a few bucks u can get the job done !! jus my 2 cents

guys correct me if im wrong !!

      Yes it can be done

They know how to desolder and all
but if you just cover those with electric tape you will always have two options to choose from
and you can do it yourself if you decide to tape

IMO i feel a bit of risk in de-soldering
as Rahul mentioned one has to be a pro, coz a a little more heat for brief time also, can make your pocket lighter by 3k bucks! as the chip may get damaged due to heat...

        @ Rahul

        Hey...
Came back here after a long time as busy with a few issues. I had a an accident speedo ready however to send u across.
Anyways i started working on it finally & all i can say is its not something an average user must try. Went through your post. A very nice & interesting one there. It would have been much better if you could have post the removal of display. From my experience with the speedo its tough to remove the display than de-soldering & soldering new leds. Any imbalance or excess force would crack it & render the whole console useless. Not at all suggested for an average user. I used a hot air blower for the same. Iam using a low wattage 15W solder. I say it would be easier to solder & de-solder using a hot air blower. Right now have got exams. Will post up the pics later.

        Cheers!!

Thanks Rahul.. actually got a non-working speedo here for 250 bucks!

I thoughr adding the "removing of speedo" will not be applicable to all Pulsars, but the Mod is. But now I think I should add a picture for that as well.

I will try to post the pics.. there just 2 white notches. After de-soldering the LCD can be pulled apart.

Well, i got the speedo for free that too its a working one!! Only the display is broken. While opening it a resistor came off & now i lost it. Its for the neutral light led. Now if i connect this console & put in neutral the led would go poof.
I liked your idea of two tone display. Mine is a white background & would put a blue tacho, red needle & white console lights.

Blue Background with White Fonts may look that contasting, have you thought of putting Blue back with Red fonts, which is already there, in stock?

Hi. A really fantastic mod there!! I have also been wanting to change the colour on my console from day one!!!

I am confused about one point though, you mentioned that the old LED's can just be taped over with black tape, but where and how do I cover the old LED's?

All you need to stick insulation tape, over the old LEDs. SMD leds are flat. Just put a tape over it.

Mine.. This is the accident speedo whose display was broken. Not done anything on it yet.. I can see that the console lights are light amber, other are red.. Just as i thought the neutral & high beam leds aren't working.

The drop across each led of the console is 1.97~1.98V. Why does the leds near tacho needle have 4 terminals?

Will be going to buy the leds tomorrow. The surface mount leds available work on 2V or they work on 3V? I had been giving 3 volts all these days. I guess this is the reason for them to not work even once.

                              Aha.. quiet interesting.

In the Speedos which i opened, both Tachi and LCD used same colour, which was more of orange than amber. Which bike's speedo is this, and what version?

Are you sure that drop is not more than 2V? Nevertheless I was testing them with just 300Ohms.. and the LEDs din't blow off.

And yes, the LEDs under Tacho have four terminal. I guessed that originally it was intended to be used for similar packaging LEDs as of the LCD part but X 2.

I have given them 4V, and the do work without any problem

I have question for u, As u have opened both old pulsar's black dial speedometer and new p220's speedometer, can you please tell me the difference in between them? Cause old pulsar's black dial speedometer shows the speed more accurately then the latest ones. What must have caused this variation?
