  • India, bikes and rear view mirrors

This is something that has been astounding me for a long time and I would like to throw it in the group to see what's up with it.

What's with people removing the rear view mirrors from their bikes?

Each and every day I see lots and lots of people driving around without RVMs on their bike, as if they have eyes in the back of their head. (Perhaps that's why they don't wear helmets too, the extra pair of eyes would get covered.)

It puzzles me why someone would want to do that, for me the mirrors give me that little bit of confidence when I take turns or maneuver through traffic. I've lost a mirror some time and it feels terrible to drive even with just one mirror.

And yes, it does seem to be a specific kind of person who takes the mirrors of the bike, but I've also seen it plenty of times with older people as well. So guys, maybe you can help me figure out if these guys have eyes in the back of their head or perhaps it's just plain old regular stupidity?

      Hahahah! Nice one!
The guys who remove the mirrors are the ones who ride lidless&feel that the 'wings' are a hindrance in cutting through the traffic.

Some feel, if the rear view mirrors hit something, they have to spend money for them. So they remove them and keep it safe at home.

          Na Na Na.....

RVM's are really usefull --- only if you know its usage ... I mean those who are used to ride with RVM's cannot change thier Behaviour...

I've seen many times people Fit RVM's but never use it - perhaps they use it for to Comb thier Hair after a ride....

I've been riding for more than 3 years without RVM's in my City and I've never met with an accident and Never been an Cause for the same...

But i always prefers to Fit the RVM's for Highway Rides or Touring....

It all depends on the Individuals Riding style....It doenst mean stupidity...

You have a pair of eyes at the back, that disappear on highways.

I am so used to the RVMs that I feel handicapped if I ride without them.

i once even wrote a letter to OD suggesting that if the government can make dumb things like saree guard and a forehead sticker like number plates mandatory, then why cant they challan riders for not having RVMs. Make it compulsory. Like helmets.

There are a number of instances that i know and have seen while riding, where the rider had no information whats behind him and simply was swerving in traffic only to have a close shave or an actual incident. Atleast a RVM will make sure the he catches the light of the vehicle behind and is alerted that there is something behind.

I pretty much am blind and feel very uncomfortable if the bike im riding does not have RVMs.

Some little thing I've also notice a lot it that those without mirrors generally are the one who get startled when something approaches them from behind. Not to mention the often seen: "I will go where ever I want without looking"-attitude that comes with not knowing what's behind them. Every time that happens it makes me want to open the throttle and kick the sucker off his bike. However, about half a second later I remember that there's plenty of large buses and other vehicles that they won't see either and those will take care of the job for me.

As far as claims go about riding styles, I don't know, but my experience tells me that unless your head is mounted on a swivel base there's a big chance a person without mirror will not look behind for each time it is needed.

@Thunder: Don't take any of this personal, I'm sure you know what you're doing. I'm talking about the large masses here.

It all came of by practise...
Initially when i started Biking - i started to ride my Bike without Rear View Mirrors(I eventually do not even know that bikes will have a RVM at that time)
After buying a new bike - i found that riding with the RVM's looked somewhat not audible and hence forth i removed them......

But this is not the same scenario with Long Tourings.....because while touring mostly i like to relax myself in some steady speeds so RVM's works better for me in Highways to have a view on the Traffic behind...

Im only telling my experiences.....and Im not insisting anyone to ride without RVM's...
All of my friends do ride without RVM's....It all came by practise...

As long as there are roads where people would\could\should come from behind flashing\honking\blindly overtaking you, you NEED the RVM. Period! Touring, commuting et all!

I just cannot ride without RVM's and before riding everyday i clean/adjust them for a perfect view .

The people who remove them are the usual lidless idiots who think their ride becomes very cool without these or the commuters who like to squeeze in to every inch of space avail. on the road and the mirrors hamper their movement and bang into cars etc .

Non-existence or non usage of both Mirrors as well as indicators should be made punishable i feel.

@jd did you get a response to your letter ?

So you mean to say you can grow a pair of eyes on the back of your head by practice....

You aren't making any sense pal with your statements.

Obviously you have never ridden other than your own backyard where you can be sure of the fact that nobody will overtake you blindly....

In my opinion RVM's are integral part of the bike. You mess with it, you have to pay the price sooner or later.

the response that i got was that there is still time for biking to grow in india and for people to mature upto the idea...

i remember an incident of 2 kids on zma who lost their lives, because the dude suddenly took a u-turn without looking behind and a truck was coming at full speed ( this was a inner main road, not the highway).

Agreed that the truck was speeding, but then nearly everyone knew that stretch was not safe, and if they had RVMS, the rider wouldve atleast gotten a glimpse of whats coming from behind, and maybe he would not have taken the turn.

A number of time you see incidents, minor rubbings, touches happening between 2wheelers, because the person does not find it mandatory or important to look behind...

And its not the lack of RVMs, its the lack of common sense and a false sense of superiority that one's riding is much better than the other, hence RVMs are for wimps.

Im happy being a alive, in one piece, enjoying my riding wimp!

                              @Thunder

I know you've got guts because you are the only guy who accepted that he does without RVMs and everybody would love to bash you here.

But that doesn't mean riding without RVMs means that a biker has a lot of guts. Infact its because of such Riders I have to honk a lot just to get detected on their Sonar coz I know they don't have eyes behind their heads but highly sophisticated Sonar system like Bats .
