  • R15 :Throttle Sensor : Warranty ?

    Hi all,

I had bought R15 aug'09. After a first service, i found that front wheel bearings were jammed. and it was due to manufacturing defect. They replaced them within no time. Now last saturday when i was heading back from parking lot in garuda mall my bike stopped. I tried all good old methods but no luck. then i left the bike in parking lot. As sunday yamaha does not offer any service i had to wait till monday morning. Monday morning i called up orion motors fortunately they acted in time and one of yamaha personnel dileep came and analysed and told that it has to be taken to showroom. And Now Morning i had talk with them they told me that its throttle sensor problem..

Now even he does not have any idea whether this can be claimed under warranty or not.

Now my worry is whether this will be covered under warranty and
is there anything like extended warranty which i can opt for. ??

because i have confidence level on yamaha has considerably gone down.

    Help please.

Talk to the Bangalore Area Sales Office man. Very helpful people.
The number is mentioned on the last page of the R15 manual.

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

hi thanks mentioning that. Actually showroom people have taken my owners manual too. I searched for owners manual -pdf on net but i could not find one.

I spoke to MD , Orion Motors bangalore, Udayakumar. He told he has placed order for Throttle Positioning Sensor, it has to come from delhi it seems. And he added no way can expect it before wednesday. This is really sad, i hav to live without my bike for allmost 15days.

The worst part is Showroom head is telling he is not sure whether that Throttle Positioning Sensor is covered under warranty or not. He told company people have told that they will try thier best to provide under warranty.

It costs allmost 6k. Now i am really worried. For no fault of mine. I am suffering.

Please give me bangalore or head office yamaha numbers.

          Thanks in advance

yesterday i had talks with customer care yamaha and they gave me one engineer's number who is in yamaha office bangalore. He told its mostly under warranty and also this is the first time they have recieved complaint on this.

Now this component Throttle Positioning Sensor has to come from all they way from delhi. Which will take another 4~5Working days which means i need to wait till next wednesday..

@ Senriors & Experts : why this has failed like this ? do sensors come under warranty ?

IMO it should be covered under warranty as it is a crucial electronic component. Warranty covers all non consumable non wear parts. So it should be under warranty. Fight for it if the Service people don't agree. Many a times because of the angry customer, they cave in. I have personally done the same. I had got the BCU on my P180UG3 replaced this way. Although it was covered under warranty they still said it is not. And once i had got the swingarm bushes[not covered under warranty] replaced this way too. Just threaten that you will complain to Yamaha India.

Its good that you spoke to the engineer. Was his name Adnan?
Since it is an electrical component (& has failed this early), I'm pretty sure it will be replaced under warranty. Do not pay for it, & talk to Higher Officials in Delhi if need be for warranty cover claim.

TPS should be covered under warranty. though im not sure of the labour charge etc.

Make sure the yamaha engineer is present there with the FID to check the throttle position sensor operation correctly. when the throttle is opened fully it should read a certain value and when closed fully it should read a certain value on the FID>

As other people have mentioned I also think that it should be covered under warranty. Good that you have already spoken to customer care. In addition, I would suggest you to find the customer service email id and drop in an email to it regarding your problem and queries, this would help you in having a written proof of whatever you reply. Ask them to confirm you whether it is covered under warranty or not. If they say they are not sure ask them to talk to higher authorities and confirm it to you.

Even then if you have problem claiming your warranty tell them that you will approach consumer court and do that if the need be.

Actually the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a simple variable resistor that can easily be checked with a simple voltmeter because the computer, ECM, ECU or whatever manufacturers like to call it, reads its voltage rather than its variable resistance. So, it's an easy one to diagnose.

Being potentiometers TPS sensors may fail due to the constant contact of the wiper arm against the fixed-resistance element. Another common cause of failure is heat, high-temperature operating conditions in which they operate. Water can also cause them to fail (due to corrosion).

Unfortunately sensors fail quite a lot, but fortunately the TPS sensor is an easy one to diagnose and change. Labour charges to change it should be cheap, unlike the sensor...

If your bike is still under warranty, it should really be covered, unless you dropped your bike in a river or something like that...

                        Hi all again,

Today morning i called up showroom head. He said bike is ready and you can come and collect it. When i asked about warranty claims he asked me to speak to his manager.

I spoke to manager, he told sir bike is ready and said part does not come under warranty sorry, thats because yamaha official saw your remote lock system on the bike !!!

The he said Speedo Sensor had failed which costs around 450/-. Then i wasnt worried much. I said i will come collect the bike.

I went there and back with babe again..

Hi, today I got a chance to connect an FID to my bike and it reported error code 15 . I think it refers to the Throttle Position Sensor issue, and I'm afraid I ran out of warranty just a week back! My bike isn't stalling or anything, but seems lazier than normal beyond 8k RPM, like it's leaning out or something. Tried adjusting the CO value to +10 and riding, didn't make any difference.

Do I have any hopes to look at? Does the sensor come attached to the throttle body? Or is the sensor available separately? I looked at the parts catalogue, but couldn't find the sensor's part number

Update: It just happened to be an error stored in the ECU's memory. An error that occurred long back due to a water seepage or battery drainage(when the bike was lyin at SS for 2 months!). All is fine for me luckily!

Sorry for re opening this dead thread. But I am facing similar issue. Orange warning light with error code 15(FID tool suggested Throttle position sensor) is popping up when I start the bike. Initial inspection at SVC by lead mech. suggested clogged protruded part of Throttle Position sensor in throttle body. As such, the throttle body was taken out and cleaned with petrol. However, even after cleaning the throttle body thoroughly, the error is still popping up. The Lead mech. says I ll ve to change entire throttle body as the Throttle position sensor cannot be changed individually. My bike is more than 2 years old and no more under warranty. Is there any solution other than changing the entire throttle body(can throttle position sensor be changed individually).
