If you think about it, there would not be any mounting point on a motorcycle that is 100% safe. Even a bar mounted cam can impale you in a freak accident. Or a chest mount can puncture your rib cage, in that fateful moment. So it is our call how we wish to proceed. That being said, we would'nt have been on the road if we wanted 100% safe. Better stay home.

And googling about dangers of helmet cam gave me some links where Contour (another action cam company) explained that since mounts are secured with 3M adhesive tape, it would give up much early in the event of an accident, avoiding serious impact to your helmet.

    Personally, I really like this cam;
Call OF Duty Ghosts Collectors Paracord Strap 1080P HD Tactical Camera NEW | eBay

I would love to mount it on top of my helmet, but the question is how to fabricate mounting arrangement for it.
Lets keep it real, helmet manufactures, manufacture their helmets keeping in mind variety of parameters. Gopro or action cam mounting is not one of them. So when a rider mounts a cam on their helmet, he is acknowledging the risks that come with it.

Now that being said, there are plenty of positions that you can mount the cam at. But the safest is the chin mount. The weight distribution gets altered and is more towards the front which is 'fine' since its in-line with teh bike's long axis. Wind drag is significantly less when compared to side mounts.

The camera that you linked is probably a very cheap one designed for role playing. What makes you think it can stand the brunt of everyday riding?

For people who are saying that helmet mount cam are not safe, please use the camera and then come to this point of labelling them as unsafe.
I have 3 mounts on my helmet, one on top of the helmet, one on chin and one on right side. And those who know about action cam, they know they weigh just few gramns even with the casing.

Now the actual mount is attached to the helmet using 3M VHB tape, which is b far one of the best adhesive tapes in the market. And the cam is mounted to it using different mounts which will break off at slight force and this is why while using them we users have to be very careful while placing them.

Only the side mount results in wind drag, rest other mount wont even make one feel that you have anything on the helmet. Leave aside hampering helmet's integrity, that nowhere is compromised.

@deejayrox Now the camera you shared might be 1080p but have you checked what fps does it shoot. A camera with 1080p and fps less than 30 wont be even near to a mobile cam output. Let me give you an example, SJ400 shoots 720p at 60fps but its actually double fps and not actually 60fps, and that is why when you slo mo the video it wont come that clear as compared to gopro.
Then come the lens part, just like DSLRs everything depends on the lens here, it wont render the correct color if it uses a local lens.

Do remember cheap is never the best. you want good output, invest in something good.

^^^Respect to above discussion on helmet mounts, I guess it is a case of everyone to his own, till such a time when there is a scientific study on the effects of such mount on individual helmet design. I think DOT or SNELL should come clean on this and specify what is their opinion on this matter.

i'm not saying you should only go in for the most expensive action cameras, but this camera u have shown will not do justice to any video u take, it simply wont have the frame rate capability and will have stuttering.
Well the camera I had given in above link was a crude one, but for my intents and purposes would have been ok considering that I'm a noob when it comes to all this, and, some you tube videos I had seen shot with this cam were pretty decent. Unless I'm serious about moto vlogging etc, it COULD have been sufficient. Regarding the cost part, I guess it has more to do with the supply vs demand than cost vs quality. Because since the last time posted that URL, the cost of this camera has increased in 3 weeks from 1900 to 2100 to 4300 bucks. At this price, it is not an attractive proposition.

Its already been tested and there is a preliminary report. Go this article: Technical FAQ: Are helmet cams safe? - VeloNews.com

Also it is not wise to make conclusions based on assumptions. There are plenty of videos on youtube that show you people riding in excess of 200kmh with chin mount setup.

Theres a reason why we have the option of mounting the camera onto stuff rather than drilling them into the same stuff.

Also you quoted one incident about Schumi who was wearing a different kind of helmet which is completely different from Automotive helmets. They dont even use the same certifications.

And it is not the duty of manufacturers to tell their buyers whether they should mount something on it or not. Its the duty of the Action Cam sellers to address that.

Yes bro....but this one seems quite good as it has 4 inch ips screen. Also it has Dual recording i.e. Front and Rear.
