  • [Photo Feature]: Tyre issue and oil leakage on p220 dtsi

i recently went to bangalore on my bike completing 650kms under 8 hours.i maintain regular tyre pressures of 30 front and 32 rear...but on long trips i maintain a 35 rear.bike is 1.3 years old with 20k on odo..in bangalore the bike was parked on the open hence subjecting it to cold nights and summer days.it was used for max 4 hours for the whole week.after that i returned to hyderabad under the same time and cruise conditions...after parking my bike in my apartment, heres what i noticed the next day :

    1) my bike's oil goes to my airfilter after continuous prolonged journeys of speeds above 115kmph with little or no rest to the bike.from the airfilter the oil leaks to the ground.it has happened before when i went to bangalore and it has happened now too... in fact i was so sure that it would occur again that i cleaned my bike's parking area so i can notice the oil the next day. the last time it happened,my mechanic replaced some rubber component in the right side of the engine.its a small rectangular rubber thing which is lodged inside the right side engine cover.he said that due to continous high speeds and prolonged hours without rest,it has become thin and hence oil has leaked into the airfilter box.on both occasions that is the previous time and now after bangalore tips, that component was changed and leakage stopped instantly ...my issue is does this happen to all 220s ? isnt this a problem if i go for IBA or something like that??

2)when they raised my bike on their platform to change that rubber thing i noticed this on my front tyre...rear is ok...what can be the cause for this?

@All Mods I have one sincere request from you.

Could you please edit the first post of

and add the relevant quoted content of Payeng's post in the 1st post of

We have tried to contact the thread owner of P220 DTSi thread earlier for this but he is absconding / not reachable so I have made this request. This will be very helpful for the new P220 DTSi owners who come to the thread with their repetitive basic queries.

If Possible also try to include links from my signature so that I may be able to change it.

      Thanks a lot.

P.S.: This is OT and has nothing to do with this current thread.

@Thejus, #1 also happened to the 2 fellows who did SS1000 on their P220Fs. I thinnk they were Floydanubhav and Ranga. They did IBA as a Group.

#2 is Tire Fatigue. It sets in when the tire has to face sharp changes in the temperature / tires become old. How worn out is the center thread? When, do you think will it require change as per that. How on earth did you complete just 20k? You were at least 5k ahead of me till whenever I remember (now the difference is just 500km). Was the bike standing for a long time.. that could have also led to #2.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

1)you mean the oil leaking into airfilter is common??

2)i havent been doing any trips dude...too much other stuff to complete i have been using the bike daily in city though...the center thread is still good..i dont think the tyre needs to be changed..but will these cracks be a problem if i go out on a trip again?are there any chances of blowout or punctures or instability etc etc ?

          1) Actually for them.. the oil did not enter the air filter box. The leakage started AFTER they came back from IBA and parked the bike. There was overnight leakage and these guys lost around 200 ml apiece. The leakage stopped by itself the next day. No other problems, just top up.. and they were good to go.

          2) You could read a few articles on tire fatigue with the help of google. I am not the best person to talk about it. Never experienced it first hand.

well thats a relief and also a sad point... will the air filter get spoilt if there engine oil in it? also my other query is that the engine oil will contain impurities right..if by chance it goes by the filter and into the engine, then i guess its all over...

so i have to carry those rubber pieces and change it everytime i rip the bike?

The oil from the air filter must be the excess oil put on the filter sponge.

My exp is different here.. Oil leakage is common while using certain engine oils (like from head packing / center one or some from clutch side packing too) but never ever seen that leaked oil managed it self into Air Filter Box..

                    @satan69in

I think better is to get in touch with Bajaj via their customer care email address and explain them the matter and ask for an porper answer and solution of course.

Dude.. but this never happened with me.. I once ripped from Bangalore till Davangere with 2 other Ninja 250Rs The avg cruise speed was over 130( cosistently in the 140s actually) dont remember timings or distance.. but there was no leakage at all... And it shouldnlt leak.. and actually it doesn't. The rubber pieces in question here fell off my bike in the 1st week itself. Did you get the cylinder head gasket changed as per schedule on 10k km? If not, its due again I guess.

no i dont think cylinder head gasket was changed... should it be? damn, will do so in my soon to come service..also the oil seal on the right side of the engine is leaking too..not excessive but stains can be seen on the engine...so when they open the head to change the seal, will change the gasket too..but this doesnt solve the issue of oil entering the airfilter box na...

I saw a small leak in the head right before my South India ride. So got it changed 1 day before leaving. Later realized that it was mentioned in the manual to get the 'Cylinder head Gasket' changed every 10k km in the manual. I guess they will have to open the head to change the gasket, so when you are at it, also get the tappets set. I have never topped up oil on my bike (I used the last Motul 300v for almost 8k km). There has never been any leaks. The leak I saw was around 1-2 ml of oil which had leaked out of the head. Anyways, where else would it leak from? It is a sealed block, and it never leaks from the crankcase. The only opening is at the head... this is from what I understand..

                              I agree with Antz.Bin..

Engine oil leaks are common due to improper sealing of these gasket and such !!!! Little care and effort while sealing would ensure no leakage at all
