Naked chain - function or fashion?

The O-ring chain does seem to have an advantage in retaining lubrication for more time due to rubber rings. But still it can gather dirt and mud and so require frequent cleaning if not fully covered. Which of Indian bikes have O-ring chain?sigpicOm Yamahaya Namaha...praise the lord!

debatable
my cbz-x has done 29k kms in 1 year , 7 months.
still running the first chain set which now needs to be replaced
frankly i think its the material which the chain set is made of. since i dont trust the chain set to last open (since it came with a chain cover
) so i wont MOD it to make it open.
secondly many touring type bikes dont have chain covers.
its all the tech which you can have. material which resists abrasion and lube which sticks on.
i stick to enclosed chain. since my bike came like that.
there still should a semi chain cover over the chain since the wheel directly slaps mud and other particles onto the chain from the top. (notice the mud you accumulate near the "U" section of the swingarm. the chain near to that part is most likely to get hit by mud and other particles. so a semi chain cover still is necessary (which the companies are giving)
of course considering that a chain sprocket isnt THAT expensive for the duration it lasts (10k kms to say the least) 850/10000 = 0.08 paise per km , cheap enough ?
im just lazy
i rather would prefer wiping the chain cover than the chain itself

I prefer the chain cover too. It makes the entire assembly - the sprokets (front / rear) and the chain a bit more whether proof than when open. If you observe, the new fad - teflon coating / treatment - for chains (very functional) stays for a really long time with the chain cover rather than without it.

I have zma and the stock chain-set raplaced at 28k which is quite good acc to me. My daily running is about 80km in dust and bumper to bumper trafffic. So maintaning it daily is not possible for me.
So i think in our dusty roads chain cover is a good thing

Well, I drove it for about 7-8 thousand kms ... No Problems till now.Originally posted by shadez View Post@samarth: what exactly do i need to do to get my chain cover removed? i too have a 180UG3 and didnt want the chain cover anytime.
comments i got when i planned doing so were:
1. bad for sprockets
2. need new imported chain replacement
3. bad for touring - with chain cover it is 20k kms and without it it is 10k kms
4. mechanic might just screw it up
would be good to get some gyan here.
1. It maybe a bit bad for chains, but not sprockets. Anyways, I'll replace both chain & sprocket together when I do it ...
2. rumour ... no need of imported chain replacement ... Stock chain is fine!
3. Yes, it is BAD for both City & Touring... but for style, you got to compromise on this.
At the best, your Maintanence cost will increase ... What else?
I oil it once a month with used engine oil, as recommended by Bike India ...
4. Just tell him to keep his fingers out of the moving chain ... he may get them cut!
Otherwise, no problem...---

Seems not a Good idea - there is no usage of the TransperencyOriginally posted by Samarth 619 View PostGuys, Fantastic Idea !!! How about a Transparent Plastic Chain Cover??
I mean it would expose the chain, protect it too, weight would be less too ...
Think & reply ... What do you say ???
You would only see the spary of Oil all over the inner parts of the Cover - if you see from the outside

The main reasons for not going for a Chain cover is that, when the Chain is cut, it gets stuck at the rear sprocket, locking the wheel and throwing the Rider off.
Thats why the high speed bikes have a open chain. But a closed chain when exposed to dust losses its life. So O-ring and X-ring were introduced.
So Open chain anytime better for high speed bikes.
@shadez:
To my knowledge the zma or UG3 doesnt ve a O-ring chain, that why the mechanic was hesistent to remove it. we cant use any O-thing on the zma/UG3 sprocket We need the one that fits the sprocket teeth spacing. Which is not available in India. Again the mechanic/info was right.
EDIT: The manufacturing cost of open chains is obviously higher than closed chains. So its not for cost cutting.Last edited by prabhubravo; 10-18-2008, 02:24 PM.

scary... but didnt quite get your point.Originally posted by prabhubravo View PostThe main reasons for going for a Chain cover is that, when the Chain is cut, it gets stuck at the rear sprocket, locking the wheel and throwing the Rider off.
right said... i did some amount of googling. p200 and 220 have o-rings but not 180. and KRP does have some options but i wouldnt take a chance and screw up my touring.Originally posted by prabhubravo View Post@shadez:
