My point of view is that, for Indian conditions a chain cover is a must. O-ring chains may be good but still it requires frequent cleaning although not too much lubrication.

Regarding oil marks, we can clean them once a while ... can't we??

I mean it would expose the chain, protect it too, weight would be less too ...

                  Hey guys,
Does regular washing effect naked chains??

As long as the chain is healthily greased after regular washing, there is no issue. Last night when I was in the RE brand store workshop, the service manager asked a mechanic to grease my bike's chain as it had been washed. So, I guess this is applicable even for the chains with the o-ring.

guys, what prabhubravo told about the chain locking in closed chains is correct. It is for safety.

Also, the O-Rings are less noisy, built stronger and are maintenance free... better choice for high speed bikes.

Don't try to catch my neck there... maintenance free = they are pre-lubed and don't need lubrication throughout their life time. but then, we need some lubrication between the chain & the sprockets... and this is becoming a little painful.

Now, tell me something... you guys can see the open chain catch dirt so you are commenting like this... how many of you guys ever bothered to check your chain that is in its casing? How many times do you lube the chain between the services? do you know for a fact that the engine oil sprayed on the chain doesn't stay stuck to it for even 200 Kms or 3-4 days at the max?

P.S.: Bike not used for racing of nay sorts. Mainly for city ride and tours

To my knowledge, the HH R&D is working on an "All red chain cover" theme.

Jokes apart, how will a semi chain cover with chrome finish look? It will serve the purpose for gud looks, and also safety for the chain.

Why not clean the exposed chain itself instead

A transparent chain cover would remain transparent only for few hours after fitment

So it is a waste IMO.

Coming to the topic, i feel exposed chains are more of fashion than function.
When everything comes ur way, u r in the wrong way ;)

So are O ring chains available in the replacement market for most bikes which don't have them as OE?
