Yes, Get the set of o-ring chain, sprockets at both gear and rear wheel of the bike. Remember you are just wasting money for looks.

Traditional chain costs 800 something & 'o' ring chain Set costs 1200 something (asked at HASS).
You can even get non 'o' ring chain at around 600, outside HASS.
AND remember you have to oil your chain everyday (after rides) in monsoon.

chain noise problem in cbz xtreme

              Hi,
I own CBZ Xtreme 2008, 21000 kms done. Always serviced at HH ASC. Wel maintained and I am not facing any major issues in bike. Average is 47-48 kmpl in city and 54 kmpl on highway.

I need help regarding the drive chain. When I put bike on centre stand and rotate the rear wheel, the chain movement makes a "kad kad" kinda noise and doesn't sounds smooth. Also the wheel will not take many rotations freely and stops soon.

              1. Is it a sign of chain being dirty and cleaning will make it perfect?
              2. Will adjustment solve the problem?
              3. Or have the chain and sprockets worn out?

But I am not able to feel any major difference while riding. Just worried abt it though.

              Thanks

try to pull your chain out with your fingers from the rear sprocket (when its play is perfectly adjusted) if you can see the full lenght of tooth of sprocket then your chain is totally worn out.
And cleaning & lube'ing shall do the trick for silent chain. Try thicker oil. Or fine coat of grease if its non 'o' ring chain.

That's nice to know! Even I have a Yamaha SZR and it comes with closed chain system and wouldnt want open chain as maintenance is more.

dear rakesh, it is true that open chain will reduce sprocket life, and also its need frequent lube and cleaning too. as i am from himachal and most of my riding in on-off due to road condition which are full of dust, my P220 need lube after evey 300 km

                        hi,

i think chain cover is good for commuting indian bikes .

                        My R15
                        - Chain is really heavy compared to my uni's
                        - Wheel does not rotate much freely even though its lubed well (maybe due to disc) Have to test once without chain : )
                        - Needs attention on rainy days & 500+kms
                        - Chain set costs 2500

                        For my Unicorn
                        - Will lube like for 1000 kms with 90 oil.
                        - Wheel rotates much freely & chain weighs less
                        - Good for commuting.
                        - Chain costed around 700 a year back
                        - Good for sprocket mods as we can cut the chain if needed(used 14:38t)

But when it comes to track, we cannot have chain guards as chain might touch the guard & might create problems during bends at good speed.

For indian road conditions, open chain needs good attention

Thanks dost. I got the chain cleaned and lubed. Its very smooth now. Also the alignment was not correct previously.

My 2 rupees: There are (as far as I know) no bikes sold in the US with enclosed chains (scooters don't count). Caring for the chain is an expected and regular part of owning a motorcycle, and most motorcycle magazines recommend checking it every time you ride, and cleaning/lubricating it at least once a week or so. The main advantage to having a covered chain is slightly increased intervals between lubrications, due to the added shielding against contaminants. The other issue is safety in a culture where pillions regularly wear long, flowing garments and ride side-saddle.

However, I would posit that, apart from the safety issue, chain covers cause more problems than they prevent. First, no chain cover can completely seal the chain. So, contaminants are still getting in there, but now you can't see them. Second, chains require regular maintenance. The chain cover makes the chain invisible, and as the saying goes: "out of sight, out of mind", so riders ignore the chain. It still needs lubrication, and even when dealing with the miniscule engines most bikes here have, it will still stretch over time. When it's covered, you can't see the amount of stretch. A loose chain is far more risky than a dirty chain, as there is a risk that it will bind up on the drive sprocket and crack the engine. I have on many occasions heard the chain slapping the inside of the cover on a bike because the rider never checks it.

The perception in India that an exposed chain implies performance is due only to the fact that most performance bikes have an exposed chain, to make maintenance easier. It's a "form follows function" thing. For example, the Hayabusa can expect to need a new chain about every year, unless you get a super-high-strength chain, and then it's maybe two years. The motor is so powerful, that the chain stretches significantly even in that short time under normal riding. If the chain were covered, the rider would have to devote a good half an hour every week to getting the chain cover off just so it can be checked for slack.

Put the phone away, put your helmet on, and ride!

Scooters are like fat girls: fun to ride, but embarrassing if your friends see you with one.
