IMHO, if you own the vehicle, you don't need to reregister the vehicle if you're staying for less than a year (even if you do so, there's a dirty trick). You'll only need to pay state tax & then keep riding. I remember it reading somewhere in xBhp; unfortunately, I'm unable to recall the thread. I'll try to Google for you, meanwhile have a look at these threads...

I'll have to verify it with my local RTO (as if they'll be of any help but still...)
Moreover I was amazed to find that the rate of registration is 7% of the invoice cost (I'm assuming the ex-showroom price) which comes out to be roughly around INR 3100 whereas I was quoted INR 3500+ (I didn't hire any agent) which means either they don't know themselves or I'm being robbed

^^^ Abi - Yes, its 7% of invoice & ex-showroom; this also means you'll need to produce the original receipt of the bike (hope you have it handy)

I could be wrong, but, thinking out of brain, a re-registration may not be required as long as you've paid the tax to the state 2. This also means that you're eligible to get back the road tax you've paid to the state 1 on prorata basis.

As long as tax is paid & insurance renewed from the same old insurance company & you own the vehicle, all other things should fall in place automatically.

Read up the whole of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, Govt. of West Bengal, under section 47(1) if I'm not wrong, says its mandatory to re-register the vehicle if the duration of stay is more than a year & there is no scope of paying temporary road tax for 1 year.
I'll have to see what can be done.

You have to transfer your bike (legally) from jamshedpur to kolkata, for getting insurance From there. Its not about re-registration.
This way you'll get a valid, legal insurance.
But there's a trick too, come down to jamshedpur get the insurance from the company (dont tell them about the transfer thingy) and you're done.
But you can't claim if you've gone the latter way.
Its legal enough but useless just formality kind of thing.
Btw, was your previous year's insurance copy issued from jamshedpur?

it has already been legally brought to kolkata, my previous insurance was bought from Jamshedpur.

then take all your and your bike's paper (NOC, registration paper, invoice etc) to some insurance company and get it done.
We did the same for all our vehicles. no re-registration needed just transfer it, pay road tax on pro-rata basis and get it insured.

if it was so easy would I have made my life so complicated just for the sake of fun? Atleast read whatever I've written...

Tax cannot be paid on pro-rata basis in Kolkata & why would the insuring company insure a bike in Kolkata when a bike has no registration here...

ok. I didnt knew about the pro-rata thingy about kolkata. Sorry for misleading.
But i still belive all new registration is not needed. Anyone can correct me if worng. I'm saying this because i've seen vehicles with insurance issued from kolkata but registration is of some were else.

Insurance and registration is not related. I cannot comment on registration in kolkata. But for insurance, if your insurance has expired,all you have to do is to take your bike physically to the insurance companies office, where a company surveyor will get an impression of the chassis and engine no., and will verify it against the engine and chassis no as written on your Registration certificate. He will not care whether your bike is a jharkand registered or WB registered. As far as insurance is concerned its pan india, not state specific.

Sure? Reason to ask is...
1. What if I take 2 insurance from two different companies?
2. NOC can be produced to show its not a stolen vehicle, but still, insurance & NOC are two different things from two different organizations completely. Would that work?

I don't know about WB, but here in Karnataka getting KA mark is mandatory if you stay beyond 11 months. Even if you have paid the tax, you have to get the Karnataka Registration number here.

This is what I was saying from the start!!!

Yes, I tried talking to some Jamshedpur folks residing in my area with JH registered vehiles & also back home in Jamshedpur with WB registered vehicles, they also confirmed that a new registration is not required as long as the police doesn't want to extract some Gandhis.

I don't know about WB, but here in Karnataka getting KA mark is mandatory if you stay beyond 11 months. Even if you have paid the tax, you have to get the Karnataka Registration number here.

I've read up the whole Motor Vehicles act, it says re-registration is mandatory if period of stay exceeds more than a year (any state in India), who cares about Acts of the govt. unless they're strictly implemented moreover I feel Motor Vehicles Act must be revised.

Yesterday while waiting at a traffic signal a cop stopped beside me on his bike & turned his head to talk to me, I was like, "Damn!! Now he's gonna start his drama...", to my surprise he said that my headlight was switched on
