Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
Sure Mik! Are you trying to do a DIY? If yes, I'd be glad and BTW could you explain the object that you are trying to paint?Originally posted by Mik View PostMy DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial
Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. |
It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.

Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
Thanks Petrolhead. Currently just planning on a DIY on my old aunty 220Fi. Its hitting 6 years and I want to reward it with a good paint job. I will be painting alloys, plastic panels (rear) and the engine (most probably with heat resistant black paint)Originally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostSure Mik! Are you trying to do a DIY? I am foggy as to how to go about painting the alloy and the plastic panels.

That is a great way to revive the feel you have towards your bike. I know the mistakes that I made so you are most likely to have a neat finish.Originally posted by Mik View PostThanks Petrolhead. We can certainly have the bike's plastics and fuel tank painted. The alloys are best powder coated. But sadly I recommend you to not touch the engine. Let it be. I'll give you alternatives on that Mik.
To begin with, a few questions for ya-
* When are you planning to start off with this - you will need at least 3-4days for entire job.
* Do you have the necessary funds allocated - once started we need to finish this off completely.
* Decide on color - same or new (if new, consider the legal procedures).
* Place - Do you have a suitable ventilated place to do this job? If it is going to be at home in the balcony/lawn take prior approval and inform them in prior. The fumes from spray is so disgusting yet as a DIYer we may like it but do not disturb people at home. However once the job is done you will be appreciated. Think about it!
* Tools - Do you have the basic tools to dismantle the fairing?
I'll post the DIY for you.My DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial

I'll post the DIY for you.
Well to answer some of your questions.
1. I can only spare weekends. So its either the coming weekend (If i can finalize everything) or maybe August end (have a trip coming up)
2. Funds are fine.
3. Currently my 220 is Red with Silver Alloys and silver engine. It has a Joel exhaust which I have already painted black (a shoddy job though :P ) I still havn't figured out what all I will end up doing but the Red stays to avoid RTO hassles. So most probably the tank and the quarter fairing at front will remain Red. (Probably some stickering or vinyl at max)
4. My basement parking gives me adequate space and limited interference so that shouldn't be a problem.
5. Havn't figured out the tools part. Dismantling 220 fairing is a tough job. I was hoping on using newspapers to cover the parts to be protected while I would do the spray paint.
Looking forward to your DIY post and the alternatives to engine paint.

Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
Excellent commitment I can see Mik! Meanwhile, please check if you have "Bosny" range of spray cans available. They are excellent products for DIY and holds good. It has been on my bike for the past 2years. It should cost Rs.200 to Rs.220 at a retailer or Rs. 165 to Rs. 175 with a distributor. Also check if you have any color matching your bike. I was lucky I had a distributor in my area and the color of my bike was blackOriginally posted by Mik View PostHey Thanks!

Interesting pointer about Bosny paints. Checked out their official site. This is giving me more whacky ideasOriginally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostExcellent commitment I can see Mik! Have sent a query to a business which retails this, via IndiaMart. Locally, I know that its not available in the unfriendly neighbourhood paint shop.

Beware of fakes bro. Never go for F1, Cosmo or anything of that sort. It should be Bosny or Kobe. Others do not serve the purpose.Originally posted by Mik View PostInteresting pointer about Bosny paints. Checked out their official site. This is giving me more whacky ideas

Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
Correctly said and that happens only with local cheap cans. The quality of spray paint has improved drastically. Bosny is a known brand and it is qualitative. When you do not prime the surface properly and leave the top coat with just the spray paint it does not serve the purpose. The clear coat used should not be from spray can. I am not recommending clear from Bosny as well. Bosny spray + original clear coat + hardener gives amazing results. That is what I already did on my bike and it has been there for the last 2years.Originally posted by abhijeet080808 View PostDo not go for these spray can paint jobs. These paints are very low in quality and can never match a proper paint job. Also, all these paints will melt when it comes in contact with petrol. Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
I had used Bosny paints too, but without the clear coat. So, I guess its the clear coat the protected the paint. Even then, I would suggest getting a proper paint job at a paint booth.Originally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostCorrectly said and that happens only with local cheap cans. Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
There you go bro. A proper paint job would cost nothing less than 5k. Even then they would not do it properly. Even if you give it to SVC they would outsource the paint job and charge you more than the market price. A proper paint job should involve painting the frames also. But these days, most painters cover up the engine and just spray it off. They focus only on gloss effect as most customers are interested in that. One should rip off the old paint completely to bare metal using proper sandblasting or phosphorous methods but professional painters DO NOT do that. Poor quality work yet high remuneration expected by painters these dayOriginally posted by abhijeet080808 View PostI had used Bosny paints too, but without the clear coat. Re: Custom-Painting Alloys !
I agree with you. But, if you want a PROPER paint job, its better to do it well at each step. A proper sand blasting followed by a good quality primer and a paint like 2k followed by clear coat. The job is to find a good painter or DIY with an air compressor on rent. I am just saying that spray can paints does not deserve all that prep work. (At least that was my experience - the Bosny paint applied after proper sanding down did not last even 6 months.)Originally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostThere you go bro.
