• White SMOKE!!! Pulsar 150 UG4 on 45k run

My sincere apologies if this is a repeated thread but I could not find any relevant discussions so posting it here as a new one.

My Pulsar 150 UG4 of 2009 model has completed 45k kms and the problems have started one by one.....

Recently replaced Bajaj genuine clutch plates with full assembly which have got worn out for just 1000 kms. Shocked!!

So, now another problem has started which I think is going to make a big hole in my pocket.

Yes!! Its a WHITE SMOKE

Checked with a roadside mechanic and he says engine head needs to be overhauled which may take atleast 2-3 days. The engine is not yet opened.

I'm seeking your help here guys.
I want to know if any of you have gone through the same scenario with your bike and it would very helpful if you could let me know what parts have been replaced and the cost of service.

I'm ready to spend up to 8-10 k if needed and I'm interested in replacing the defective parts rather than reboring the engine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

By the way, I live in Koramangala 4th block, Bangalore and searching for a good mechanic. I would like to avoid ASC as I've lost all the faith in them.

Regards,
Naveen

Looks like your piston rings have gone kaput. Oil is entering into the combustion chamber, resulting in burning of the oil. I guess, you have no choice, but to open the cylinder block and to see it. If there are scratches on cylinder walls, the best would be to re-bore it (someone who can do it with precision), change the piston rings and you should be fine.

Ask your Bangalore folks in the Bangalore offline G2G thread for some reputed mechanic.

Hey navin.smg , sorry for late reply. I will suggest u a mechanic named NAVEED. His workshop is just before sony signal if you are going towards Ijipura signal from Madiwala. You have to take the left which comes in between Sony signal and Dalma signal. The name of the workshop is KARNATAKA MOTOR WORKS.

Thanks for the help!! I shall reply after the engine reboring is done.

BTW, should I go for engine rebore or bore replacement? The mechanic is suggesting for rebore...little bit confused

Mechanic has quoted 6k approx (rebore)
ASC QUOTE: 8.5k approx (with new bore)

Ok here we go...
Just go for a complete new bore,,,
Rebores are usually screwd up by mechanics.,..
Take a parts list from the mechanic for a nee bore....
Buy the parts from a dealer and pay the mechanic for labour....
U wil get a stock bike for around 5 grand with an asc like job
Plus this is more reliable. And very few chances of a screw up...

Thanks Divyansh for your suggestions. Since my bike was kept at the mechanic shop for more than a week and I couldn't make a proper decision in time, I had to go with mechanic's advice for rebore (I saw your post just now ). Now the mechanic has got the reboring and resetting of shaft, valves, piston and etc done from a workshop and he is yet to assemble the engine.

I asked him to wait for me, so that I can sit there and verify whether the new parts (like timing chain, clutch plates, rings and etc) that he is going to install are genuine and has a valid Bajaj hologram in them (Yes, I was cheated on few occasions before).

Any other things that I need to take care while the engine is being assembled?

Regards,
Naveen

Extremely sorry bro for my late reply
I was a little engaged with mother ill health.
No problem if he has started the work
Make sure parts are genuine and new
And use a mineral oil 10w30 (castrol) for first 500 km after repair then throw the oil and replace with a 20w40(castrol) mineral oil for next 1000 km again throw the oil.
Now use a mineral oil for next 5000 kms again replace every 1000 km(castrol) initially....
After that switch to motul 20w50 3100 gold. And use it,
Clean air filter carb etc nd njoy a fresh ride

Should I replace it with 10W30 as you suggested?

Keep the 20w40. 10w30 is way too thin for pulsar. Check after 250 kms or so. Then switch to any 20w50 of your choice. A freshly bored engine is bound to create more heat. So keep checking the oil regularly. Replace as needed.

Regarding the clutch, please do check the bell whether the bell hasnt slipped. A slipping bell would eat clutch plates.

A bit of advice, be aware of piston sticking. After rebore it might feel as if the piston is getting stuck while running. If so, then be very careful and run the engine in very gently. Keep your tappets slightly loose to avoid any pressure on the new valves and piston. Adjust them as the engine starts running smoother. I hope you changed the rockers as well.
