  • RYNOX NOMAD V2 & HAWX review

Have used Rynox Nomad V2 saddle bags for around 10K kms and i should say that they do their job pretty well and as they have a capacity of 64 litres ( both sides ) a lot of luggage can be carried in them. The best part which i love about them is the material quality and the hard shell that they are made up of, even though if you happen to stuff the both the bags beyond their limit the shape of the bag remains the same because of the hard shell. I have used these bags on CBR250R , Honda CB500X and Ninja 650 and i have never faced any problem and they stay intact once they are loaded on the bike how rough the ride may be. During rains you need to use the rain cover which is provided along with the bike and apart from internal compartment there is also a provision for keeping documents on the outside compartment of the bag and also the bag can carry 2 Litre water bottles on each side and also one can strap on camera tripod on the top of the bag with the help of clips provided.

Now if you ask me about HAWK tail bag, i would say that it has allowed me to carry more luggage ( 53liters ) during my recent ( June2015 ) Ladakh trip. The advantage of this bag is that it can be coupled along with my saddles which allows me to carry around 110 litres of luggage ( Nomad + Hawk ). Hawk is one of the first bag in the market which has in-built bungee chords making the bag sit on the bike more rigid even on rough terrains. This Hawk can also be used individually or coupled along with saddles which makes it more convenient while travelling. During my Ladakh trip i was carrying 10litres of fuel in my hawk along with other luggage in the Hawk.

Your's is from the very first Batch of Claws.

There has been a lot of learning's so far and the latest gen of Claw's have incorporated all those learning's.

After 40,000 Kms your Claw must be due for a replacement.

But Sir when it comes to capacity i was having around 117 Litres of capacity ( Saddles 64 litres + Tail bag 53 litres). After reaching Leh i dropped my saddles at the hotel and was carrying only tail bag (filled with essentials ) with me for the next few days until i returned back to Leh ( after 4 days ).

and when it comes to Claw one will be restricted to 55 litres.

For most guys the capacity that the Claw provides is all one needs to go to LEH and back.

The idea behind the Claw was to provide the Optimum Carrying Volume, Universal and easy Mounting and The Best Craftsmanship all at an Wallet Friendly Price..

.. in short "One Saddle/Tail Bag Combo for All Bikes"

Plus one only needs to carry just one bag (the Claw) to the hotel and bag and not worry about carrying around with 2-3 bags.

Yes i agree that one needs to carry around just one bag if its claw. But in my case i was carrying my friends luggage also with me hence i needed more capacity.

                        ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

And when it comes to Craftsmanship i definitely give points to NOMAD V2 Saddle bags than the Claw which looses its shape once you load it to its full capacity. as apart from Capacity one needs looks too ( if they are concerned like me ).

After my experience I would say that "How much do you WANT to carry ?"

That's exactly the way the Claw was designed. i.e as a Soft Luggage.. a design philosophy also followed by the likes of "Kriega". Its NOT INTENDED to retain its shape without any stuff in it. Why let the stuff inside an Empty bag bounce around with the bike?

Correction: The Claw gets its Shape when it is properly stacked.. and with less stuff it collapses.. there are actually compression straps provided for it.

Once you buy a Claw your option to use a Saddlebag is killed. If I have to pay the same amount to get the Hawk, why would one kill this flexibility of using the saddlebags.

If Sandeep was carrying a Claw for his above mentioned ride, he would not have been able to use any saddlebag and would not have been able to carry his friend's luggage. So all I am saying is why kill the option of carrying additional luggage by buying the Claw.

When stacked with less stuff, Claw gets completely shapeless- I am sure, this cannot be the thoughtful design philosophy. It should have rather had a compression/ expansion mechanism. Why would one want to carry that huge log when I am hardly having anything inside. I think the Hawk score another point here as it has a thoughtful expansion/compression mechanism- One can converts into a small tail bag when not expanded, when carrying lesser stuff. Though I did not like its shape when not expanded but its much functional.

Also I was told by a friend that one needs to very carefully fill the bag else the bag shows some stability issues as it tends to bend towards one side (I got an image that exactly explain this on Viaterra's FB Page itself), However a Viaterra Dealer in Mumbai recommended me to buy a bungee chord along with the Claw to counter this. But then if I have to use bungee chords, Hawk would again be a better option as it comes with Bungee chords by default.

Well after using saddlebags with a tail bag on multiple occasions and using Claw for non-stop 1 month bike trip, I can easily say "To each his own". What I disagree about claw is the mentioned stability or shape issue. The craftsmanship of claw is top notch and based on month long trip through central India(read rain and off-road) and Leh, I can vouch for its stability and shape.

Definitely, either combination has its pros and cons and one needs to choose what serves better and for WHAT purpose. For me Claw was ''Fill it, shut it and forget it" for entire trip. On the other hand, saddlebags and tail bag combo did give me a little more flexibility but I had to spend my fair share of time in loading, unloading and striking various permutations.
