You can repair the broken chain but it's advisable that the chain be replaced. As the sprockets were not lubed for a long time, I don't think the condition of the sprockets are too good. It may betray your friend in the middle of nowhere. There might not be a garage within 20-30 km.s.

Then I shall replace the chain. Will check the sprockets too. Replacing the chain along with the sprockets will be a safer idea. Right?

Yes, that's a safer idea. And please tell him to lube and maintain the chain and sprockets henceforth.

The job was done successfully. Bought Rolon chain and sprockets for Rs. 820. After installing, it was lubed by 140 gear oil. My cousin have burnt his pocket now!! so from now onwards he will take care of the general maintenance.

The bike runs much smoother now.

I am new to xBhp and this is my first post.
I own Honda CB Shine from last 1 year and my experience with the machine is not so good .
I drove it on Bangalore's city roads as well as on highway. I have completed 10600 Km so far.
I always used Shell-Super petrol to keep the engine out of any contamination and get more mileage.
It gave me around 55Km/L which is not bad for 125cc bike.

I got following problems with the bike:

(1) Gear Shift
The most serious problem is its Gear shift. Its not comfortable at all. Shift from 1st to 2nd gear is very hard and makes loud Khaaattttt...... sound. Driving in traffic requires frequent gear shifts.
0-5 Km/h --> 1 Gear
Reached 5-8 Km/h --> Shift to 2 Gear (Pulling little bit more in 1st gear makes engine screaming and bike stalls at the spot)
Reached 12-15 Km/h --> Shift to 3 Gear
Reached 25-30 Km/h --> Shift to 4 Gear

This creates lots of inconvenience while driving in traffic.

If gear is not shifted withing the above specified speed range, it either SLIPS during downshifting or STUCK during up-shifting.
Also change in gear not happens in one push of pedals. I have to push long way down and shift happens with 2 clicks... Kit...Kit... If I am not pushing it hard and leaving the clutch after 1st click..... gear is getting stuck between middle of two position and engine is making weird wwwwhhhhhhhiiiirrrr........... sound. To recover from this situation.. only option is to switch off the engine and put gear to neutral in off condition (by dragging bike to and fro) and then start-over again.

I am totally pissssed...offf with this problem.

(2) Chain Noise
Before 4th service it was only gear shift which was making me crazy. But after 4th service I got one more problem in bonus. Its noise from chain.... . While driving at any speed chain creates a special noise and vibration which is visible to bike owner and his friends only. Guys at their service center can not notice it at all.

(3) Engine performance
Engine is totally scrap. It is designed to run at 40-45 Km/h on 4th gear only. Before and after this speed it struggles to pull its own load (I am light weight guy). After 50 Km/h it starts vibrating and crossing 60 Km/h vibration becomes so intense that I feel it all nut-bolts and joints will loose and going to come out. Vibration reduces little bit after crossing the speed of 72 Km/h. I drove it on speed of 88 Km/h max.
Also engine was heating too much.

(4) Honda Engine oil performance
After doing lots of research about Shine problems on internet, I came to know that Honda 10W30 engine oil is not up to quality. I switched the engine oil to Shell semi-synthetic 10W40 oil. I felt the magic in my bike. Engine became very smooth, still up to 50 Km/h only, but far better than with Honda oil. Also pick up improved little bit and jerking reduced during acceleration and deceleration.
Engine heating also reduced too much.
Experts at the service center gave the excuse that, because of cool weather of Bangalore company recommends 10W30 oil.

(5) The Great Honda service
This the poorest experience in 1 year with Honda. I was complaining about gear shift problem from start when I bought the bike but no one listened. I tried at two service centers (Dhruvdesh Honda, Jayamahal and RT Nagar) and complained at showroom guys also.
Their free service means Wash the vehicle from outside and return it. Even they don't bother to open the seat and clean area beneath it... like air filter etc.
For the chain problem after 4th service, they asked me to replace chain sprocket set paying 1500 rupees. I forgot all my manners and fought with service guys. Complained directly to Honda about all the problems and they assigned ticket at same service center... . I gave the bike again but no result. Got the same excuses.

Finally I sent a notice to Honda threatening to go consumer forum and asked them for full refund+interest or new bike (I know non of them is not possible from Honda.... their response to customer is well known). Then service manager from Dhruvdesh Honda intervened and after long series of test drives (by service guys, show room guys, technical experts, sales mans, accountants etc), they replaced Gear shaft, Chain sprocket set, and rear wheel bearing.

But nothing solved.... Same gear shifting and chain noise problems are still existing. Only Khaaattttt... sounds during shifts from 1-2 gear position has been reduced.

I have decided not to take matter ahead doing more complains, because these problems are are common in this bike (as I found from internet reviews). Also frequent opening-closing of engine parts will create more problems instead of solving them. I can not trust Honda service anyone. Those guys are totally useless and careless. Once they drained the recent engine oil from bike in a a dirty tray and again poured the same oil back into bike from the tray.

I was waiting for some compact 150cc bike (not so bulky, not so heavy, not so costly) which is in the market now.
Going to sell the CB shine and buy Suzuki Gixxer.

@xBhp Experts, If anyone know the solution or workaround for gear shift problem please let me know. If this problem is resolved, I will give this bike to my younger brother.

Hi guys,

I also have a 2013 model, and now 22k kms completed so far. Same problem with gears and Lots of engine vibrations. Though mechanic told me to change Chain Set next time. I\'m also using Wexpol Engine oil treatment to smooth engine, but seems like it worked marginally.

So my ques is should I get sprocket form honda itself or get it from outside? What you guys use to reduce vibs?? Anyone tried to fix some other bike sprocket in Shine??

Vibrations are not always chain related. If you do the below vibrations will vanish. (In my dream neo experience)
1. Check and adjust the valve clearance - settings given in manual you may show that to mechanic
2. Clean fuel strainer, filter and carburetor & tune it.
3. Clean oil filter screen and centrifugal filter. Replace spark plug every 10k kms.

yes, not always chain related but engine is a bit harsh in shine, not expected from honda! And whenever I\\\'ll go for next service I\\\'ll tell him to do such things...thnx mate!
One more thing, should I use engine flush to clean engine or normal oil change will do??

The harshness we feel is 90% that the engine is running lean (lack of good fuel flow) . Honda engines wont go kaput easily unless something is blocking it - First thing is to clean the petcock filter and the petcock strainer but you might have to drain fuel. It will have got more junk after 1 year even it appears good outside.
Engine flush is not recommended by Honda , but cleaning the strainer and centrifugal filter is recommended at 12k kms.

Dude, first of all take your bike to honda service centre and have all bolts, plastics tightened up and oil changed. MAKE SURE YOU GO INTO THE SERVICE CENTRE AND SUPERVISE THE WHOLE PROCESS.
I know Honda people won\'t allow you in. But still, insist and go.
Some of my friends have noticed that Honda people are injecting the same engine oil and charging customers for brand new bottle of engine oil.
To some extent it will reduce the vibes.

Regarding sprocket change, it is of no use i guess.
In my college, there is a CB Twister with a changed bigger sprocket, but still it will vibrate.

At what speeds your bike vibrates>?
