It used to happen with me but as the chain set was at its life end after using it close to 18K. This issue was resolved after i replaced it.
My bike has run only 8400kms. And also the chain flaps around too much when riding.. is it normal? I also observed that when i rotate the front sprocket it does not rotate circularly, meaning it rotates as like a bent wheel rotates. Have you experienced this?
I also changed the sprocket to 14teeth and checked, the result is the same in both stock and 14teeth pulsar's sprocket. It rotates like a bent wheel.

Ok, good to hear that. I asked that because I'll be doing a long ride soon. May be I'll try to fit a Pulsar AS's windshield ( if it is cheap). I guess I'll be needing a windshield because im 6"2', and therefore will be high in the cockpit. Though not 100% certain that i would be fixing the windshield.
But as you have asked about the auxiliary, i guess 40w would do no harm. Even I'm trying to get auxiliary lamps fixed.

Understood but it wont be the case where they are always ON. Only few hours on a night ride on an unlit roads. Guess should take that load.

    Warning long post.
Need help in diagnosing the issues with my Apache rtr 180 abs. Bike has completed 40000 Kms. Whenever I roll of throttle after acceleration, I get backfire from silencer.
Kind of like Phat Phat sound. Could the TPS be at fault or just plain AFR getting screwed? Mind You TPS was never changed in its entire lifespan.

Get AFR checked, mostly you are running rich
Misfiring might also indicate to change the spark plug, get it changed.

Also I will be doing Preventive maintenance of my bike at home. What things should I look for that could go bad during monsoon season? Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Major points to be considering while Self Servicing of Bike.
Oil changed from Shell advance AX5 20W40 to Shell advance AX7 10W40. - Already Done - Price Rs. 477 GOOD
Brake pads will be changed to new pad. - Not DONE
New chain Sprocket Set. - Not Done (Is it not done till now!!? Get it replaced if chain adjustment nuts are at the end)
DOT3 Brake oil to DOT4 Brake oil - Not Done. (Check level and top up)
Spark plug changed - Iridium or existing TVS spark Plug? - (REPLACE)
Air Filter - Not done (REPLACE if not yet replaced once, else just clean it with petrol)
Tappet Setting - not sure since I would be changing the TPS or AFR setting to be done to resolve the issue with backfire.(Better if u set tappets)
Sensor Cable Front and Rear to be changed - ABS has stopped working.(can be a battery issue too, get battery checked)
Speedometer showing flickering of Fuel bar - what to do for this? Don't know the position of Fuel sensor.(No way around this, just keep note of KMs you cover and fuel you fillup)
    New Tyres Front and Rear - MRF 90/90 R17 ZFS 49P (Rs. 1850) and MRF 110/80 R17 ZRC 57P (Rs. 2150) - Already Done.

Any more suggestions would be helpful.
Also suggest a good quality grease and most likely places I should apply this Grease.
Mind you this is my First time self-servicing my Bike.

Hello All, I want to install some auxillary lights to my 2.5 year old RTR 180. After some search i have narrowed down on to product mentioned in link below. I got personal experience of these lights while riding my friends RE on a totally dark village roads and the throw was way better. As those are 20Watts lights will it be a good option to connect them to battery via ignition switch and one more on\off switch? I am just worried if battery will be able to take such load of 40Watts.

I always use chain spray after adjustment.

As far for your mechanic concerns try APT bike point. you can find it on Gmaps. The guy who owns, thomson is helpful.

Do every gear change at 4k rpm, you will get optimum mileage as well.

    1. My bike starts shaking around 108kmph and refuses to go any faster. Shouldn't it top out around 120 as claimed by TVS? what could be the cause of both this issues?
    2. I am getting 40km/l in mixed riding after two services. Will it be called below average?

3.Can I use kerosene to clean the chain before using chain lube?

    Thanks.
Adding to what others have said already, i am assuming you are new to riding because even i too struggled to get the bike past 110kph speedometer reading in the initial days. The key over here is changing the gear just before rpm limiter which is 9000 rpm on Apache rtr. Except for the first gear (5000-6000 rpm max), you can upshift just near 9000 rpm on the remaining gears. And also do crouch while upshifting to 4th and 5th gear. Do it on an empty stretch of road with all safety gears and a downhill slope or flat surface would be ideal. And i feel early morning temperature would be the right time due to cool air which makes the bike run more smoother. The bike can do anywhere between 135-140kph on the speedo if you have the guts to take it that fast.

Again a word of caution, take it nice and easy and slow. Try with 115 kph first and then once you have confidence push it to 120 kph. Then maybe 125 and eventually 130 kph and plus. Look, I am not encouraging high speed runs as i would suggest that Rtr is the most happy at 95kph speedo indicated. But if an occasional high speed run thrills you, then gear shifting at max rpm (9000 in Apache's case) is the only way you can get your bike to the maximum speed, throw along a little bit of crouching to get away from the wind resistance and shedding some weight off the bike and in person would help.

Regarding the wobbling at high speed, my guesses would be higher tire pressure at the rear or lean afr settings or worn out rubber bushes in the wheel.

1 . I live in a dusty rural place where the chain gets all dry/all mucky every 250kms, which makes chain cleaning a headache for me; will switch to diesel from now on.
    2. Yes, I check chain slackness and tyre pressure every week and my bike is brand new. The engine must be good as it sounds as such and is brand new. I do speed runs only solo, and on four lane NH straights; so I don't know what's going wrong.
The thing is, basically I just want an assurance from somebody experienced that it's nothing abnormal. The extra 10kmph isn't important to me, I am just anxious about my bikes long term health.
    3. Also, what's your opinion of the bike shaking at higher speeds that I mentioned. Could you shed some light on that?
    Thanks.
    Don't worry about the speed.
If you want to reach 120kmph crouch and ride like in a sports bike position, you'll reach 130kmph on speedo which approximately is 120≈124kmph real speed. And do this ONLY UNDER SAFE CONDITIONS. You can only reach 108kmph normally because of aerodynamic reasons.
And for the wobbling at high speeds, that too is because of aerodynamic reasons and also our bike is designed based on race track statistics, so basically our bike is designed such that you can change direction very fast. So the wheelbase is short which reduces straight line stability.
There is nothing wrong with the bike, its just designed like that.
    Hope this helped.
    Ride safe...

    1. Top speed depends on many things, rider weight, chain health/slackness, tyre pressure, engine condition, tarmac and what not. Are you sure all this are at correct points?
    2. I was getting 35-40kmpl in 6yrs of ownership.
    3. Diesel or WD40

    [QUOTE=Siddhartha.S;1300614]Is he experienced with Apaches?
Actually I'm astonished, that there are so Many apaches but nowhere is there a proper modifier or an expert on this bike! No offence to the experienced people on this thread. But I'm just telling my experience, even if there are experts I've not found them. So please if any of you know experts in Apache in Bangalore please let me know.
And also i will go n check with this Lakshimi bike service once.

Sent both you guys a pm with the guys's number. See if this works out for you.

And regarding the long distance touring, i think it all depends on the rider. Machine is not the problem. I can safely tell you, that on a Rtr 400 kms is easily achievable in a day. Just get the seat to be more plush and comfortable for long distance touring.

He is an experienced guy. He fixed most of the problems with my rtr. He will get any modifications done for you, but he will only advise against it as it only a waste of money. He would advise stock setup anyday. Anyway enough of harping on about the mechanic. The only reason i am suggesting him here is because he is honest at least. And mine was an Fi bike which was converted into a carburetted one. Even after spending 25k odd the one who did the job could not fix most of the electricals of the bike. And took about 2 months odd to get the job only half done.
With the mechanic i am suggesting, i only spent a couple of days with him and reverted almost everything back to stock setup without any further problems until i sold the bike. If you guys still wanna try send me a pm and i will forward his number. Anyway i am not vouching or trying to market for anyone here. I am just sharing my experience of finding a reliable mechanic who can be trusted.

Simple funda is, if you can spend money anything can be fixed or any modifications can be done. If you cannot, better leave it running on stock setup (which i have learnt and vouch from my experience).
