Quite right about RE venturing into low capacity bikes and failing. It was because small capacity engines/bikes is not the Brand identity of Royal Enfield. Did you know that Royal Enfield also tried making and selling (and obviously failing) scooters and also mopeds in India..!!

Royal Enfield's center and brand identity is in making Classic Styled (1950-60's) British bikes.

The Classic 350/500 is the purest form that a Royal Enfield can be. The result is for all to see, the Classic has a waiting list of 10 months..!! A brand as strong as Royal Enfield has to stay true to its center/identity:

    For a better branding perspective:

How would one like to use a toothpaste branded as "Surf"..?? (I am sure every one has a funny taste in his mouth by now). But then there are other examples like Tata which makes salt, steel, automobiles with ease. But then there are not many such examples.

Hero Honda putting down a "Super Hit" product..?? I wonder why?
The CBZ was definitely the first one to create the sporty, 150 cc four stroke category in India, but ultimately couldn't take the "Pulsar" Heat.

How do I know it? I owned one (CBZ) in Metallic Silver back in 1999 to 2002.

                not CBZ classic

CBZ classic cannot be considered flop.
The sales were low just because of "Kitna Deti Hai" mentality .
It was first bike to make think above 100 cc and define new segment of sporty bikes.

the guys will REALLY need to prove the machine to a market such as ours. Its not that easy[branding+deep market analysis+heavy promotions+efficient after sales service+reliability, all at the same time,IMO]only factor working on their favor might be the rising gas price at that time
