I'm just thinking of the cost implications and the complexity of a turbo.. Seriously, the world's smallest turbo, made by IHI Japan cost a fortune in Indian Terms.. Why do you think the Nano doesn't have a turbo like other small Japanese Kei cars..? Its to reduce cost.. If i'm not mistaken, the cost of a normal turbocharger without any high tech gadgetry costs around 60-70k rupees.. So, in all probability, expect a naturally aspirated engine.. Also, in a normal low tech turbo, the turbo lag will be HUMONGOUS.. Especially for the Indian Driving Style..

Imagine a Bullet "V" twin with multi pulsed direct injection diesel with 6 gears,Shaft drive ,self start cruiser...... i guess Hero group will have another hit if it does that.

please let it be something radical. Harley Davidsons should think twice seeing them!

Honda is best for its engines...

Hero should source a good engine manufacturer/Supplier for this new segment... Because it has already lost Honda... Surviving is still a.

My best wishes to Hero to maintain the name and fame as it is now!

the whole purpose of a motorcycle is good performance with minimum cc engine,in other words superior power to weight ratios when compared to cars. the simple reason why an 800 cc alto has a top speed lower than a 150 cc r15. diesel engines owing to their high compression ratios will weigh more than a conventional 400 cc bike and hence perform much less.
superbikes are the biggest blunders on indian roads.

For everyone on this thread criticizing this move by Hero and making fun of diesel engines on bikes, please watch the ''American Chopper'' episode from January 2010... ''Monster Energy Diesel Bike'' .

The American chopper team made a completely new chassis and added a turbo-charged diesel engine to it, which was driven to a bike launch location and every had just praises for it.

                    Monster Energy Diesel Bike

Its a good thing, that Hero is eying alternate segments. With the current technical knowledge about diesel fuels and engines, I guess good things can be expected I am definitely happy with this, since diesel is so much more cheaper that petrol!

                    EDIT:

                    '' ''

''The Neander uses a parallel twin cylinder turbo diesel engine with two meshed counter-rotating crankshafts, which the manufacturer claims to remove engine vibrations.[5] The 1430 cc engine produces almost 100 hp at 4200 rpm and over 200 Nm of torque at 2600 rpm.
Neander Motors AG planned to produce 99 bikes for 2007.
                    ''

The above mentioned are also some interesting bikes

From the above two bikes,it can be concluded that a mordern 400cc Diesel Engine developed for a motorcycle can deliver anywhere between 22bhp-28bhp of peak power while providing much higher torque figures(around or more than 50Nm) at the same time along with lower Fuel cost,if not consumption.

All new diesel engines are turbo charged too......so Hero's bike may not only be Diesel but turbo induced too !!!!!

around 24,500 USD.............which translates to around INR 11.5 lacs minus the customs for the T800 and 85,000 USD for the Neander which tells at 38.5 lacs INR minus the customs..

Neander obviously have a lot of custom set-ups rather than commercial set up so the highish price.

Hero motors can really bring out a wonder.........rather a benchmark 400cc diesel engine from Indian make which means value for money too, unique in its own grace World over !!!!!

Yeah, they'll definitely add a turbo to it since the true potential of diesel engine is brought out by a good turbo charger Hero can do great things with this idea if they do the R&D plus the testing properly. They've just been dumped by Honda, lets hope they don't go into rebound
