With TVS behind, Honda looks forward to beat Bajaj.

MUMBAI: After overtaking TVS Motor in January, Honda has now trained its sights on Bajaj Auto (BAL), with February sales of the Japanese two-wheeler giant's Indian operations just 7,000 units short of the Pune-headquartered company.

While BAL's sales in the second month of the year at 2.04 lakh units have barely moved from 2.02 lakh units in January, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has recorded an 11.2% sales growth in February over the previous month at 1.97 lakh units. For the 11-month period between April and February, however, BAL is well ahead, by some 5.73 lakh units, compared with HMSI's 1.783 million.

That gap could, however, narrow significantly, with HMSI now counting on a debut in the entrylevel motorbike segment to take on BAL. "Without a mass motorcycle, we are No. 3; with the launch of the Yuga 110cc in May-end this year, we will be very close to No. 2," says NK Rattan, HMSI's VP for sales, marketing, planning & corporate affairs (at the time of writing Rattan had put in his papers at HMSI with March 10 as his last day).

The Yuga, which will have a couple of variants, is expected to be priced competitively at Rs 40,000-42,000. Hero MotoCorp dominates the mass segment, which accounts for a fifth of the total two-wheeler market, with the CD Dawn priced at Rs 36,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).

BAL's entry-level product is the Boxer 150cc - it has a 100cc model, too, but that is only for exports - that retails at around Rs 42,000. HMSI's lowest-priced motorcycle in India currently is the CB Twister at just under Rs 44,000. If Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj is worried, he isn't showing it.

The new plants, demand for more and more scooters, recent updating of the Dio, release of CBR150R, etc. all support this particular news. It seems Honda have created news in almost every segment below 250cc recently...

Bajaj also has a lot going on with the 200 Twins & the yet to be recognized Boxer 150, which might give it better profitability and reputation too, but maybe not exactly "sales numbers".

So yes, either sad or happy, but Honda might just grab hold the No. 2 position soon, with Dream Yuga being the Trump card here. Who is more profitable is a totally another matter though.

Big Red will rule the Indian market. And lets hope they bring their international range soon.

I think Bajaj can beat Honda. Just a matter of time till Bajaj quality matches Japanese quality and refinement.

So, this is the piece of news that my dad was talking about yesterday... lol.. he was saying something about Honda wanting to dethrone Bajaj with "a bike in the range of 40k - 45k, with the name starting with the letter "Y" " i thought he was just kidding, but this turned out to be true...

Take a look at the pics, the bike resembles "SHINE" in almost all the aspects, maybe the engine is also that of the SHINE's but bored out to 110cc instead of the 125cc.

As per my opinion, it would take a hell lot more than this puny look alike bike to take down BAJAJ !!!
Every BIKE has a lot of speed in it. The trick is getting the speed out of it.

If Honda comes out with this 100cc dream yuga, it would hurt Hero like hell rather than Bajaj. Their 97cc bikes have become outdated and engine is quite old. People would continue to buy Platina and Discover 100 (discover 100 is 94cc) since they give unmatched hell lot of fuel economy. After some time I see Hero sales dipping down. Honda eating Hero's sales. All Hero, Honda, Bajaj more or less at the same level. A day would come when both Honda & Bajaj would successfully beat Hero. Honda might emerge no.1 then. Bajaj can give good competition to Honda when their overseas sales increase much.

Not to forget Bajaj is doing ever rising sales outside India now with monthly exports now climb up to 1,22,000+. Bajaj would eventually be recognised as a proper MNC after the bigger bikes and richer markets exploration. May be after 10yrs.

i didn't mean it that way.. :P lol.. i meant to say that the bike might have the same engine of that of SHINE's but with reduced bore dia... i used bored out to 110cc "instead" of 125cc of that of SHINE's..

It is actually scooters led by Activa which makes up the numbers for HMSI.

In Feb 2012 HMSI sold around 1.2 lakh scooters in India. HMSI can go ahead and sell thousands of Dream Yuga's and overtake even Hero Moto but I give a damm.. its bikes like the CBR250R which interests me.

^+1... You are right... quarter litre bikes are the ones that catch my eye too.. :P now a days, people prefer 150cc and above bikes only.. even in villages i saw RTR 180 ABS and Pulsar 150s and 180s roaming around.. i think, 100cc and 110cc are dying a slow death..

Now what Bajaj lacks is a good entry level model.Somehow everytime it comes up with a new product for the masses,it get an overwhelming response(read platina,CT 100) or it gets a cold shoulder(boxer 150,xcd series)..their bread and butter is now the discover. Heck,I dont care if Honda takes over the number 2 or even the number one spot, the higher segment preference by Bajaj has improved their quality by leaps and bounds(if the reviews of the new pulsar is anything to go by).Good news is,the brand recognition abroad is also increasing, and thats a good thing for an Indian company anyday

I've no doubt BAL will lead the game atleast for several years as they've the pulse of the nation; what HMSI has to improve...
                        1. Make products for customers rather than selling what they make to customers
                        2. Attitude of people at showroom & most importantly at ASC
                        3. Last but not the least, charge a little lower premium for the brand

If honda has to capture Indian markets it has to reduce the spares cost which is high when compared with Bajaj. Also the bikes and next the spares availability is a major factor in deciding number game! Bajaj has showrooms and service centers in small towns too but Honda is lagging behind here!

honda can't beat bajaj in no.,in coming years, people doubt pulsar's reliability but i find 8 out of 10 bike in my locality to be pulsar, now commuter[urban] segment is fast moving upto 125-150 cc ,so pulsar 135 and 150 will bring volume,180 and 200 will bring profit .the attitude of honda sales-persons,over-priced products,not-so-appealing style[under 200 cc]turns me off.

dream yuga is supposed to bring volume, twister is doing well,so now they have a conservative and a agressive styled entry level bikes.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
                              #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.
