  • Piaggio re-launches Vespa scooter in India

Global two-wheeler manufacturer Piaggio on Thursday launched its Vespa scooter in India, priced at LX-125 Rs 66,000 (ex-showroom Mumbai). The company is looking to create a premium luxury space in scooter segment with Vespa.

This lack of stopping power however is not so much of a worry because the Vespa's 125cc mill is not in a hurry to go anywhere. The 125cc, three-valve engine makes 10.06PS and 10.6Nm. This means the Vespa is not ideal for power hungry, performance freaks. Then again, if you belong to that bracket, you wouldn't be looking at a Vespa anyway. However I did feel that a bit (just a bit) more punch would have made this scooter immensely more fun.

On the possibility of entering motorcycle segment, he said: "Piaggio has a range of products and brands from 50 cc scooters to 1,400 cc bikes and superbikes. Today we have just started the journey, we are committed to bring all the global brands that we have that will suit the market here."

This time its original form VESPA not LML

    Vespa Specifications:

Engine: 4 stroke, 3 valve, single cylinder, air cooled

    Displacement: 125 cc

    Max power: 10.6 ps @ 7500 rpm
Max torque: 10.6 ps @6000 rpm

    Transmission: continuous variable transmission

    Ignition: Self and kick-start

    Electricals:

    Battery - 12V, 5Ah low maintenance
Headlamp - multi focal with 35 W halogen

    Suspension:

Front - single arm with coil spring and dual effect shock absorber
Rear - coil spring and dual effect shock absorber

    Chassis:

Frame - monocoque steel high rigidity structure
    Dimension - 1770x690x1140 mm
    Seat height - 770 mm

Another interesting news :The company plans to expand the reach of Aprilia dealership as well to 5 locations by end of 2012.

66K..?? That's over 20K premium at the ex-showroom price of India scooter king, Activa..!!

Premium..?? Even if one is willing to let go of the "Fuel Injection", atleast where are the Alloy Wheels, Front Disc brake, Tubeless tyres..??

Even the 2012 Dio has got tubeless tyres, Aviator/Wego has alloy wheels and Front Disc brake is optional on the Aviator.. and all the above are significantly cheaper than the Vespa.

its very much overpriced & i believe that company will soon reduce its price to keep it alive in Indian scooter market.

A premium of this magnitude would have been justified if certain features were included. Alloys and discs shouldn't be much of burden but then, if they are positioning it a premium product and if they meet their sales target, which they will, Im pretty sure, it wouldn't actually matter to them.

                I Feel the same way.
And Disc is not needed for a scooter which is 125cc

obviously for vespa - retro does not mean "retro looks" only - it means retro technology also ..

btw, 3 valves, so third valve is inlet or exhaust .?

it seems the number-3 is the in-thing now-a-days...

pulsar 200 ns with triple spark-> 3 spark plugs

now this has -> 3 valves

already a lot of cars here are -> 3 cylinders

Price is definitely a negative with the limited goodies or features it offers compared to the competition.

Some of the good points are the fuel efficiency and massive 8 litre fuel tank. This gives an amazing range. I see alloys as standard on the site VESPA - INDIA

Retro styling and colors make it a tempting. There should have been atleast an introductory lower price.
Imperfect human knowledge may be a bumpy, pot-holed street but its the only road to wisdom worth taking . . .

the new Vespa looks cool and unique. But the 66K price?

Just think if a Manufacturer (like Bajaj/Yamaha/Suzuki) launches a stylish, geared scooter with peppy engine, Fuel injection, decent mileage, won't that win over the current gearless scooters ?

Well said that would obviously be much better option for public. This one looks ok for someone who likes retro-looks but 66K??? give me a big break.

stop looking at it as if it were a deal at Big bazaar where u did not get the free soap with the surf. Not every machine has to be loaded with technological stuff to be fun or to entice the rider. If the company has priced it at a particular level they must have put a great deal of thought into it. Vespa is iconic and a lifestyle product and corroborates a lifestyle price tag. Just like a puma shoe costs 5000/- with no extra feature than that power from bata at 1500/-...we pay that premium for it being a lifestyle product.
