Very simplistic views on money being shared here.

Sometimes people are price elastic - they don't care as much because at a certain price range they are comfortable spending more. People with 40 - 60L spending ability don't nitpick much when selecting a car in the 10L price range, they may even pay 12L if the car looks/feels premium irrespective of the world agreeing it to be VFM or not.

The same person may check each and every fitting if buying a car over a crore, because the human need to protecting assets kicks in and wants to help make sure you are making an OK decision.

People may go ahead and buy the Vespa and may be willing to pay an additional 10K and live with it happily, the concern for the company is only if there is a sufficient supply of people who are willing to bump up - may be they will get it right or wrong (could just be a function of how the majority of the people across India feel about spending 80K on anything)

        vespa for 80k

buying a vespa is like buying a bullet.. you buy it from the heart and not from the head so it is always a bad VFM decision.
those who buy it are those who want a vespa and not "a scooter "
i have bought a harley superlow spending nearly 7L OTR in bangalore when it doesnt even have a tachometer, fuel gauge or integrated ignition cum handle lock!
but i know i wouldnt be happier riding anything else ( kawasaki ninja bullet or hyosung etc)
i do agree they should provide fuel injection and disc brakes

i thought this scooter wont sell at all.
thanks to FIAT 500 and VW BEETLE sales in India .
But i found a dozen of vespas plying around chennai and mostly ridden by men. They were actually activas target customer and seems that they have been bored of using them.

The price is spot on IMO,Its expensive enough to drive away people who may not know the bike's history but affordable enough for enthusiast to consider getting it.

Saw one a few days back. All yellow. Not even a loud bullet 500c could distract people from ogling at that beauty. Class.
@giridhar- rightly said. Spot on pricing.

Premium..?? Even if one is willing to let go of the "Fuel Injection", atleast where are the Alloy Wheels, Front Disc brake, Tubeless tyres..??

Even the 2012 Dio has got tubeless tyres, Aviator/Wego has alloy wheels and Front Disc brake is optional on the Aviator.. and all the above are significantly cheaper than the Vespa.
This one is marketed more as a lifestyle product. (Just like we wont get a modern frame or engineering on a nightroad special)

By the way, this is the best time to relaunch bajaj chetak (with old logo) with a 200 cc motor and 20 HP() . Ahh, and sell it for 75k. and We can see the cult fan following of it. This will help bajaj to regain the market share from Honda.
No a 200cc not required actually. a 150cc motor is required however.

                    Nostalgia

Firstly, the main reason for people ruling out a vespa stating its price is just ignorance. It actually has a style quotient and a rich history or heritage as many xbhpians said and is unique. Moreover, the indian roads and the recent moped scene has been basically ruled by the scoots like activa , followed by the pep n dio etc.. At present , theres a wide variety of choices in the scooter division, too wide, one might say. And there seems to be a new design or a new feature in every one of them. Even Yamaha seems to be into scooters this year while everyone is kinda desperate for them to unleash a 250cc + bike on our turf.

But, returnin to our vespa, as the company rightly states, its a symbol of a distinctive lifestyle and is indeed kinda immortal. It has a history and brand name all of its own. No wonder that girls find it cute , because, it kinda is. Also, some of our western friends say that its a valuable possession and is also long-lasting,(which I slightly doubt on indian roads). And basically, talking about sophisticated tech specs like shocks and tyres and "more power" for a moped all seems to be the result of new found general knowledge in the technical aspects. I'm just thankful no ones talking about monoshocks or dual-discs

All in all, its a real treat to those who know about it and/or have a flair for it. As many would agree, the vespa ain't for everyone. That being said, the price is a real critical concern in the indian market, and sadly, I've seen just a handful of vespas in Hyderabad, so I too think the company should consider waiving the price a little, so that their sales pick up. When only the moolah is the deal-breaker for so many, why not just reduce the price so that their numbers increase on the roads.

Afterall, a Vespa is a treat to see

I just spoke my mind. Feel free to comment.......
