And 15 bhp? R125 makes 14.5 bhp at a very high and revvy (by single cylinder standards) 9000 rpm or so. Even Duke 125 doesn't make 15 bhp complete. And forget 2 strokes as example. You know how a 100cc 2 stroke is almost equal to 200cc 4 stroke. And I wonder how will the Duke engine be modified to make it a low capacity commuter.

I think people should have realistic expectations. Of course, Bajaj is outperforming everyone's expectations, but this bike can't outdrag bigger machines anytime.
Monoshock is a practical option, because it has made appearances on commuter machines since years now.
And some special purpose made low maintenance Fi setup could be a consideration for getting good mileage. LC just doesn't make sense in a commuter- mostly, nobody revvs it that hard.
One doubt, how is 100cc 2 stroke is almost equal to 200cc 4 stroke? That is in terms of power? Then can we compare RX100 and 200ns in terms of power?Yeah,15 bhp seems to be unrealistic! Is that the reason why R125,duke 125 was not launched in India?
    Anyone know launch date?

From what I (vaguely) understand, its got to do with how many strokes of the piston are needed to produce power. In 2-stroke bikes, every alternate stroke (or 1 up-down motion of piston) is a power stroke, while in 4-stroke bikes its 1 in 4 strokes that is a power stroke (or 2 up-down motions of the piston). So again theoretically, a 2-stroke bike can produce equivalent power of a 4-stroke bike at HALF the RPM. Assuming both are single cylinders for simplicity. And double displacement roughly produces double power if other factors like combustion efficiency, engine design, etc are identical. Hence 100cc 2-stroke is (roughly) equivalent to 200cc 4-stroke.

EDIT: Lots of other factors also come into play here, like engine heating up like crazy when revved high so it being better to produce power at lower RPM, and we not seeing bikes that produce peak power at insanely high RPMs. Cooling tech used is a factor too. Then there is the fact that you cannot directly compare an old gen 2-stroker with a new gen 4-stroker either. Lots of other things as well, so trying to pit RX100 against P200NS is stupidity.

PS: I may be wrong and mechanical was never my strong subject in school or college so @psr sir or some other learned senior please clarify

I never said it would be in terms of "Max Power Output". I just said it would be around double, meaning double the overall potential, including torque. Like MHG clarified, 2 strokes are at a huge advantage over 4 strokes, due to a power pulse for every 2 strokes instead of 4 strokes.
Let me give an example: One particular 100cc 2 stroke give around 16 bhp with good low end torque. And Pulsar 200 DTSi 4 stroke gave around 18 bhp with satisfactory to good low end. So, while my mentioned rule holds true roughly, one can't arrive at exact numbers for 2 strokes vs. 4 strokes, as there are individual differences from machine to machine. MHG, you've explained it well.

Let's not go Off topic on this guys. There are other threads which discuss the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke topic.
Kindly continue here, what you expect from this 100cc from Bajaj...

I've made it clear: I expect a super fuel economist & good handler that can show the competition, that a everyday-realistic-100 kmpl is possible from a street legal bike. But whether or not that happens, remains to be seen.

15bhp from 100cc ? Did you know that the *legendary* Yamaha RX100 made just 11 horses? What you really want is a Dazzler or something.

Anyways, I agree with MHG's analysis because that is the way forward. This will ideally be the downscaled Discover 125 (just like Discover 125ST and Discover 150 make the exact same amount of power). So that gives it breathing space to be priced at par with the current 2-valve Discover 125 which still costs only as much as a HMC Passion Pro. Just because some Japanese manufacturers are scared of using 4-valve on 100cc bikes doesn't mean that BAL cannot be the first one to do it.

It would be even better if they can bring in a GDI fuelled 2-stroker instead of a 4-valve 4-stroke 100cc. But then if wishes were horses, my bike would have had 1000 at least .
Before 89 RX had 14 of them. Yes comparing a 4s with 2s is not fair. Its like comparing a CBR 500 with the NSR 500.
BUT, Looking at the new trend I am forced to believe in 4s. A 375 cc single is able to make power that is equal or more than RD 350 which is a twin and a 2s. Anything can happen as far as bajaj have 47% shares in KTM

Bajaj will be launching a new 100 cc feature rich motorcycle on 7th January 2013..

Here is the excerpt from various news sites..

There were rumours that Bajaj Auto will be launching a new 100cc motorcycle in early 2013. Now our friends at Bike India have confirmed that this motorcycle will be launched on 7th January, 2013.

The Indian two-wheeler giant claims that this new motorcycle, when launched, will be the most technically advanced and expensive in its category but will remain a mass market product.

K Srinivas, president, motorcycle business, said that the motorcycle has been aimed at spicing up the commuter class of machines which he said had been filled with motorcycles that had bland features and were bought just for the sake of fuel efficiency. However, he did not specify the price range in which the new motorcycle would launched.

Srinivas’ emphasis on the motorcycle being technologically advanced is a sign that it will provide good competition to Hero Motor’s Splendor. The 100cc offering from the Gurgaon-based manufacturer has been a market leader for the last 17 years but was overtaken by the Discover marginally last month (Splendor-1.21 lakh units, Discover 1.22 lakh units).

We are expecting the new motorcycle to be based on Pulsar 200NS and will feature its triple spark technology along with single rear shock and additional features for the segment.

Bajaj to launch the most advanced 100cc motorcycle on 7th January - BikeWale News

We can say that the most awaited bike of 2012 will come to light in 2013. Whatever it may be, Bajaj will launch the most exclusive 100-cc bike till date, on 7th January 2013. I can say that it is one of the most desired bikes in India. K Shrinivas, President of Bajaj Auto also echoes the same. He said that people have to make compromise on features in order to get mileage in the present 100-cc bikes. But this bike will change the scenario of 100-cc segment in India. It will come fully loaded with features so that people get more mileage without compromising on features. Lack of features in 100-cc have converted the potential buyers to 125cc and 150cc. This new bike will appeal to masses.

Bajaj to launch Exclusive 100-cc bike on 7th January

While Bajaj Auto had announced that January 2013 would be when it would launch the most technologically advanced 100cc commuter motorcycle in India, we now seem to have a date on which this motorcycle would break cover. The folks at BikeIndia report that Bajaj Auto will launch its spanking new 100cc motorcycle on the 7th of January 2013. The motorcycle does have some hype surrounding it given that Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, has repeatedly emphasized that it will the most advanced 100cc motorcycle to be sold in India.

My 2 cents to the speculation!

From what I expect, the new bike is supposed to counter the full frontal assault of Japanese behemoth Honda. So the product will be designed with "RELATIVE" technological advancement in mind to maintain Bajaj's position as VFM Indian brand with market leading technology compared to Honda while competing in "premium 100 cc segment". So in my opinion this will make the all new Bajaj 100 feature:
                  1. Mono-shock, which is marketed by Honda in CB uni 150 as the "major advantage in handling" and reason for commanding premium (relatively) over other 150's.
                  2. 4 valve high revving engine with 3 or 2 sparks, with carb not FI, and 5 cogs still making it the most advanced in the category
                  3. smooth revving engine + top-notch gear box to compete against the Honda's CB series (Don't know about other places but in Gujarat the sole reason why most people by CB series like shine and yuga is smoothness of the engine)
                  4. Low weight and mass centralized bike with exceptional handling characteristics akin to it's current ST 125 to blow off the age old rhetoric "Bajaj = Bad Handling"
                  5. Digital Console adding the premium feel, upping the ante compared to "splendor, passion + pro, dream yuga and cb twister"
                  5. Maybe radical 200 NS or P135 inspired "nanga estyle" which will help beat the selling point of Twister??
I am listing these specs as these make sense TO ME, otherwise Mr. Bajaj is free to do as he fancies. These are just my speculations and please don't crucify me over my humble opinions!
                  When in doubt...... Gas it!

A 100CC advanced bike in India means
                    - Digital console
                    - Front Disc
                    - And jazzy looks
                    - Split seats

This seems like a CT100 which would be based on the Discover design and with these "innovations" in the segment!

Mr Bajaj confirmed that the new bike will be launched on Jan 7th.

                      Source : Money Control

Q: Any discounts that were offered on any of these categories either to the end consumers or as commissions to the dealers?

A: No. From our side on no product, in no market, in no state and no region have we offered discounts to the trader or to consumers either directly or in the form of a finance scheme etc.

It has not been necessary because fortunately we had two things working in our favour - one is that the two new products have done extremely well, secondly, for the new motorcycles we have a big launch coming up in a few days on January 7.

On the other hand, there has been a fair uptick in the three wheeler market because in many places like Delhi, Jaipur and a couple of other markets as well, fresh permits have been released. With these tailwinds we have not had to resort to any such measures.
