I rode it yesterday. It was not too frentic to run out of steam quickly in every gear like the 200 Duke. It had plenty of power. 85 ish in 2nd gear with the showroom guy clinging on for life.... all on a wet road!
V stable bike and tightly sprung. Should be a hoot to ride. Can't wait for mine

Exactly. That's what I was expecting, just a stronger version of D200 with pretty much same character.
I mean, what's the point in releasing a naked street bike that has its power delivery tuned the same way as faired racing bikes, weak in lows, strong in highs?
I want my lows and mids, lol! It's a street bike! If I wanted a Ninja I would had gone for Ninja...
I'm sure D390's "calmer" ride (compared to D200) will suit many people, but I think many of those who love D200's character won't find D390 appealing enough to upgrade to. D200's character offers a great fun every time I ride it, and I'm not sure D390 will give that.

I thought of that too straight away! But not sure, if the power delivery is tuned that way then sprocket will help only a little. What will benefit more is a good ECU tune to boost lows and mids. Kiirus and Race Dynamics, are you listening?
Even for D200 they managed to make the lows only little stronger, but mid rpms were much stronger, at least in Race Dynamics' ECU map for D200.

Correct. It will impress anyone who hasn't ridden D200, or who don't like the aggressive nature of the Duke 200. But for people like you and me who are smitten by the character of D200, we ought to wait.

To the Duke 200 owners who have test ridden the 390:

If I gave you 2 Lacs today and asked you to buy a Duke, which one would you buy?

I would always buy the bigger, faster and safer choice. But if you all say Duke 200 is the better bike then I probably need to revisit my choice or i guess do some more research

It is definitely a great bike. It has to be, with those specs and features. I am sure the 200 riders would stop missing the 200 once the tacho crosses 7K on the 390. The 200 looses steam at 120 kmh. The 390 would just be warming up there!

One thing's for sure. This would be a great touring bike. With a stressed free engine and potent top end with power everywhere.
In city, won't be much different to a 200 just that the rider would have to work the clutch, gears a bit more.
at 2 lacs this is the thing to buy surely. But I would rather wait for the RC 3R/6R and the triumphs.

If I already own a D200 and if you offer me 2 lacs to buy a bike of my choice, then it is obviously going to be D390, as I am not a big fan of CBR250, and it doesn't make sense to buy one more D200 when I already have one.

However, lets say, if I am looking for an upgrade to my D200, then I will not sell my D200 for D390, as it just does not impress me much.

You lucky boy.... I envy you!!
So that means, we can still stir out loads of fun on the biggie; of course it'll depend a lot on riding style too.
I hope the showroom guy continues his show.....

Yes, it is fun after 7000 rpm. However, for some like splus and me, we would also like to have low and mid range apart from the top end. It is at the low end, where we were not impressed. If you ride this and Duke 200 in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you will be tired of the lack of power at the low end. Yes, it will be a hoot on the highway with 44 horses beneath you.

Just an example, while riding back to the showroom after the test ride, theres a slope to enter the building. We had to wait for the security to open the gates for us to ride in. I just rode the bike like I would normally do, making sure I do not give too much throttle, and the bike was sputtering. This was one such incident.

At 120km/h the 390 would be warming up.... that's what makes me smile, i've never had that feeling on highways where i felt comfortable at 120kmh with my P220. Just wana experience that feeling where i'm doing 120kmh and i have a vehicle infront of me, just a flick of the wrist and i pass it with no sweat... pure bliss...i might just become cocky with that power though...

Perfect. This is EXACTLY why I decided to not do an impulse booking and wait for a test ride. If it's not a monumental upgrade, i'd much rather wait for the triumphs to show up.

On another note, I think dropping a tooth on the 390's front sprocket might do the trick for riders accustomed to the 200.

Triumphs would surely be more fun and also burn a much bigger hole in the pocket. With current exchange rates I don't think they can price Daytona or the street triple for less than 7 Lakhs. If they do then I will trade my not yet delivered D390 for it

Yeah, I agree. But how often do you go 120+ kmh? Or go on touring?
Most of the ride is a city at low and mid rpms, and you want a 43 hp STREET bike to give you a good power in those conditions. I don't want to think now whether to put a smaller sprocket or/and pay another 10-20k for a new ECU map that I'm sure will come out soon, JUST to have those horses available in a city. And I don't want to ride the bike in a city just in 1st and 2nd gear in order to stay at 7k+ rpm.

On the other hand, 2 lacs is a great deal for such a bike, and I'm not sure I want to miss it.
I guess we all can only know if D390 is "IT" for each of us only if we try it for ourselves.
I'm going to Bangalore anyway in 2 weeks and will have a test ride and decide whether I'll get a D390 or get a ECU map for my D200 and boost the power to some 28 horses and give it a top speed to some 145 kmh...

For me it's not about to have a bike with as many CC as possible even if you give me 20 lacs - I want to have a bike that I'll have fun with and that can give me a good and practical ride in both city and a highway. What would I do with R1 even if you give it to me for free??? D390 (so far) sounds it's a good bike but less fun than D200.

I think you missed the news about Triumph developing a naked 250 for Emerging markets. He is talking about that.

Guys I am sure we need to "get use to" the powertrain. The D200 guys must be riding D390 in a short gearing fashion as per their habit.

In the dense / Bumper to bumper traffic we should use just 1st/2nd gear which can hit upto 50Kmph/70Kmph and any thing below this kmph is always great to drive in these gears.
For higher acceleration in city we only need to use first 3 gears of the Duke390, as we should be able to hit ~100kmph easily.

Rest other(4,5,6) gears must be there to use the higher power above 100Kmph with decent acceleration.

Its not that easy. In bumper to bumper traffic, like the Morning Office going traffic, where traffic moves at a snails pace, you cant hit 50-60 that easy. Also, its not about using each gear effectively, sure this is a work around for low bottom end power.
