Naturally, each one of us would think of how useful a motorcycle like Duke 390 could be in traffic in the city where each of lives respectively. This motorcycle might provide fun at different levels in, say, Delhi and Bangalore even in rush hour traffic. Rush hour traffic is bad almost everywhere but it can't be equally bad or worse everywhere. In many situations, one might find a 13hp FZ16 to be ultra fun and powerful enough, but definitely not in other situations. Likewise, Duke 390 might be more fun in Delhi even in rush hour traffic (that too depends where in Delhi) than in similar situation in Bangalore considering the roads are better in Delhi in many places.

Without riding a Duke 390, I would still assume that it's going to be as much fun as Duke 200 if not any more, in traffic. Fun isn't directly related to the engine, 'cause otherwise we would find all 150cc motorcycles producing 13-14bhp of power to be equally fun, but that isn't the case right? Fun also comes from how the motorcycle is designed to behave when it's on the move and that comes from chassis and suspension and the rider ergonomics and the overall feel of the motorcycle... Here Duke 390 is similar to the 200 but with a bigger engine at the same time. I have no reason to believe that the 390 can't be more fun in maximum situations. Also consider the fact that it comes with ABS that can allow a rider to have more fun with hard braking.... Obviously, not all the things can be experienced in a test ride. Sometimes, more time is required to pass a judgement.

Duke 200 is extremely short geared that's a known thing and because of that it could be enthusiastic to provide the initial *jump* than the 390 but I guess that is it. Ofcourse, the 200 will not be quicker to 60 or whatever speeds than the 390 in any gear. And ofcourse, the 200 won't hold speeds at higher rpms at any gear like the 390, and who says that one must use all 6 gears in traffic. I mean, 390 is a more powerful Duke with longer gear ratios so use 3 or 4 gears in city. Why must we use all gears? Each motorcycle requires the rider to adapt. The 390 shall provide no less fun than it's younger brother considering its same at many levels but with a bigger engine! The Duke 390 shall outshine 200 everywhere including the fun department.

I've been saving up for my first "big bike" for quite some time now. I'm would just about be able to scratch and claw my way, if Triumph can deliver a steet triple for 5.5L as per the announcement 18 months ago, which is why I am very cautious about weighing up prospects for 390 as of now.

I guess theres no point discussing further. All we had to say is, to us very few D200 owners who took a test ride, we were not impressed. However, that doesnt mean it should be any less interesting to others.

Lets leave this here. As "Fun" is subjective and we arent going anywhere with this.

Posting here too.

Test drove the beast yesterday guys, and fyi i own a duke200, so my findings are more of comparisions.
1.Abs works flawlessly, i tried the rear brake manytimes, and it worked everyrime.
2.Bike seems bit taut than the 200.
3.clutch is bit stiff.
4.Bike zooms.did about 70 in 2nd.
5.for city, 2-3-4 gears are the max you can use, unlike d200 which works in 6th gear at speeds excess of 30.
5.iirc, 2nd gear 2500-3000 rpm was 30kmoh which pulls till 80(i did 70 though).that speaks about the drivability and longleggednes.
6.Tyres are fantastic in wet
7.Bike lunges ahead after 6-7krpm, in a more pronounced way than d200.
So net net, really a worthy upgrade to all enthusuiasts.this is easy performance, unlike d200 which has to be wrung out till guts, but i like it that way....remember rx100 vs rx135.

mods, could you merge two 390 threads?

I saw the display bike today at KTM Banjara Hills. The Bike looks hot and will standout with its Orange Frame and alloys. The engine looks fully packed. From the reviews, lookslike the 200 guys seem to be disappointed. Waiting for the test drive now to understand the bikes character

That's all in theory. It "should" be great. That's why I was excited until now when test ride experiences started to come up.
But people who tried it say it's lacking in low end, which is VERY important in city ride. That's why the disappointment... Many people expected D390 to retain the neck breaking character of D200 and just be a stronger version of D200. But apparently it's not. However, I think with the taller gearing D390 will actually appease to MORE people, an average kind of people that like riding in little more relaxed way. D200 isn't relaxed, it's almost as if it's constantly pumping adrenaline in your blood, pushing you to ride it faster, and hence this "fun" etiquette it has. Riding it makes you feel good, regardless of a road, be it a city or a highway.

BTW, on my D200, except in stop and go traffic I use only 3rd (max 85 kmh) and 4th (max 105 kmh) gear. 5th and 6th only in highways. Duke has enough torque to pull from a low speed even in 3rd gear, so there's no need even to shift down to 2nd. D390 will probably be the same but with 1 gear down.
It's just that I personally expected D390 to have more torque in low end so it can pull from a low speed in a much stronger way than D200. I don't want to have to be in powerband above 7k rpm to have its power. This isn't a Ninja.

I am not sure about a fact I heard of the KTM 390. This bike has been toned down a little bit with gearing. It has been made taller geared for India. In the original short geared form this was too violent. Used to lift the front wheel in every gear.
If only some XBHP test riders could comment on this one?

So basically its a tourer type maybe similar in lines to cbr250 as far as power delivery.hasn't that been what many people have been asking for.stress free riding.Instead of hand guards KTM could have given that long windshield and maybe somr crash protectors as standard instead.waiting for more test reports.

I agree with you completely on the character of 200 (you own it ofcourse). The 390 will not have that hurried feeling of a 200 because it's not as short geared. Theory or real life, the 390 is ofcourse a stronger version of 200 in any which way you would want to look at it. I believe we all can agree that 390 accelerates quicker than 200 to any speed above 20kph, but the only thing is it's not as short geared hence the difference in feeling acceleration. In my opinion, the 390 shall appeal to more riders (including tourers) not because it lacks that hurried feeling of duke 200, but because it has much better ability to sustain high speed riding, again ofcourse due to the bigger engine. For me, "average kind of people" are the ones who will find either 200 or 390 too extreme just by looking at it

As far as reviews are concerned, I haven't come across any review complaining about low end torque. All reviews I have read say that it has a *wide powerband*.

I understand the difference between theory and real life experience and I am not trying to put my opinion as a fact (I didn't do it with my previous post either). I believe that the major difference is that Duke 200 will tell you almost everything about itself even with a decent single ride. But with Duke 390, a little more time needs to be spent to see how much fun it can be compared to 200 in the urban setting. What I am seeing here is, one or few more guys have taken one test ride on 390 and they say that it doesn't have that hurried feeling of a 200 (in their own words), and suddenly all Duke 200 owners are worried about, *wrongly put*, lack of low end torque in 390!

KTM 390 does 0-100 km/h in 7 secs and KTM 200 does in 9.5 sec and R15 does the same in 11.5 secs. So we have a clear winner here.

Let me try to get this point across with an example... A 600cc supersport will completely destroy a 690 duke or even a street triple in outright acceleration (open road). Doesn't mean a supersport will be more ridable in the city. You have to rev them hard and keep the revs in the narrow power band to get performance out of them. The street oriented bikes however, make all the power lower in the rev range which means they accelerate hard even in low revs ( typical for ity riding conditions) hence, a more fun experience.

I'm assuming this is the same phenomena between 200 and 390 here but to a much smaller extent since both bikes are city oriented, 200 a bit more than 390.

I am not sure if applying the same analogy of comparing a 600 supersport and a 600 streetfighter is appropriate to the case of duke 390 and duke 200. If we go by this example, then it is proving inherently that the short geared duke 200 is more city friendly, which might not be the right way to compare and conclude. Ofcourse, riding is the best way to check.

However, I will rest my case on this discussion by saying that the only thing *missing* in Duke 390 is the feeling of an *initial jump* that is provided in abundance by the Duke 200. Without relating the 390's city friendliness to its much quicker acceleration in any way, I will highlight the fact that the 390's gearing is more spaced-out and hence *relaxed* compared to Duke 200's. And being on the slightly relaxing side is always better-feeling for sane city riding (though in no way less menacing, if you want it to). Even one of the Duke 200 owners above mentioned that "D200 isn't relaxed, it's almost as if it's constantly pumping adrenaline in your blood, pushing you to ride it faster...". Honestly, who wants to ride like that all the time? May be some, but all the time like that? Even I would like to have a nice relaxed ride on a motorcycle like Duke and this is where the Duke 390 does the job brilliantly. However ofcourse, you can be even more menacing on it than 200 if you want to! It's like the 390 has split personality! Now that is truly insane!

I agree. Of course D390 is much stronger and faster machine. But it's all relative. What D200 owners (including myself) have expected is that D200's acceleration and low and mid torque will increase proportionally, but what we hear (yes, I agree, it's still early to judge based on just a few test rides, but they somehow agree with each other, which gives me a reason to believe they're right) is that it is stronger but not as strong as everyone expected based on specifications. When I read the engine makes peak power and torque at lower rpms than D200 I was very happy, thinking "ah great, we'll have even more power and torque at low end!"... But it doesn't have, it's where it's lacking.

However, what everyone is ignoring is that D390 was officially announced with 44 hp (at KTM's website), but when it was released few days ago that figure went down to 43 hp, even on KTM's international website. Which makes me think that between the official unveiling in Austria and all those reviews, and the launch few days ago they might have detuned it little bit, and reduced the torque in low end.
They did this to D200 well after the launch, softened the low end torque and reduced the rev limiter from 10,500 to 10,000 rpm in 5th and 6th gear, which effectively reduced the top speed from 138 to 133 kmh. Just to make it little more smooth. Not cool if you ask me.

Actually D200 does 0-100 kmh in 9 sec, and we all saw that video with D390 doing 0-100 kmh in just a tiny bit over 5 sec but with bad gear shifting, which could translate to max 5 sec with proper shifting. But, it looks like they detuned it after the launch, and we'll see the current numbers soon from different reviews. It'd be a real shame if they are quite worse.

Perfectly said! That's the whole point of all this talk. D390 seems to be less of a street bike than D200.

Over and Out.
Why do you think all D200 riders always have a big grin on their face? All the time.
But seriously, that's why we're all different, and I think more people will like the more relaxed D390 than aggressive D200 character. But have no doubt that most D200 owners LOVE that crazy character, and that's why they were ready to blindly upgrade to D390 expecting it to have that same character.
With all this story - I'll probably end up getting D390 just because I'm not sure I'll be able to resist it. It's too much of a good buy. Even with that reduced torque in low end...

Power from a DOHC engine is gained from high revs. KTMs have DOHC engines.

You wont get anything from a KTM/R15 if you are not revving it hard. Saying that street performers makes the power lower in the range is incorrect. All these bikes have to be revved hard. Whoever took the test ride on the 390 and called it a lower accelerating bike than 200 has not unleashed the real power from the machine thinking it to be a similar revving engine as that of 200. The number of gears hardly increase when you go up the cc. But the speeds you attain in a particular gear increases up the cc. To get more power from this dohc setup, you need to rev it more in the initial gears.
