re: 2017 KTM DUKE 390 Launch at EICMA on 8th November!

    hey all

I want to ask something here - Is there any relation between the new emission standards and the power output of an engine?
There is this notion according to which the same engine when made in compliance to stricter emission norms won't be able to generate same bhp.
Because if its true then the new ktm 390 won't have any increase in power/torque values ?!

    Cheers

          lol true..

Anyone has any idea when this will hit Indian shores?

Everyone is expecting it to get costlier. So, on-road price might cross 2.4L here @bangalore

There's definitely a relation between increasing norms and decreasing peak power.
You have to modify the exhaust by using better soot and particulate matter handling structure and converting materials, which made the exhaust heavier, and this kind of change reduces the peak power an engine is able to obtain... Its exactly why aftermarket unrestricted exhausts like 2 brothers, Akrapovic, etc. Is able to make more power....
Plus, you have to work on the combustion efficiency, which is done differently by different companies, like Fuel injection was one big leap, then of course, multiple spark plugs also helped a bit.

Earlier, euro norms were relaxing enough, and with technology improving, like catalytic converters, fuel injection, lean Air fuel ratio and better combustion timing and control, matching the norms was easier... But now, we've almost reached a dead end.
Euro III was where the pressure started mounting heavy! Around 2007 that is.

Now with euro 4, it gets so difficult and frustrating, that cbr600rr will be discontinued.
Other manufacturers are increasing the cc, like Daytona is rumored to touch 765cc, and junior Panigale just went 959cc to maintain/increase its power, while both bikes did/will gain weight, there's no escaping that.

Euro norms specify maximum limit for each chemical like CO, NOx, SOx, etc.. And now they're so low that its getting tough to match them...

            ...
Coming to Duke 390, it is 373.2cc for now... So, will we see it being upgraded to a proper 390 or more cc's to comply with euro four and not lose peak power on paper?
Or will they do an unconventional thing, like a twin or triple spark plug setup??
Or will they just give up, and end up with a heavier exhaust only, losing a little power or power to weight ratio?
            Only time can tell this....

Thanks a lot for clearing the concept. I thought it was too noobish to answer.

I used to think that the big names in aftermarket exhausts which don't void the warranty also get green signal from the law and therefore are environment friendly too.... Otherwise why saying 'YES' to the 1 lakh Akrapovic on RC390 but 'NO' to the 25k Ixil

Anyways, so eventually most of us gonna end up as Outlaws.. !!

              Cheers to That

The rear seat looks bigger.. Caught testing, does this mean it will be launching during festive season?

And the headlamps are not LED as speculated.

Might be a 200 right?? As it was keeping pace with the 200NS. (Camera bike)

I like the design philosophy of the new Duke 390.
If they actually lose power or power to weight, I hope they consider a lower gearing for fun kind of riding and all. So, even if it maxes at 160 or so, it should be fun to ride. There should be an instant feeling of "improvement" to the common guy who takes it out for a test ride.

Going a little OT... Will move both posts into the General Biking Discussion topic, the one for general technical discussion.

No question is noobish. We all know some things, and don't know others. I'm against the culture of "What, you don't even know this?" sort of bashing. Totally against.
Any question is ok. Of course, there's a thread in the General Biking Discussion so we'll move this there.

I don't completely agree with the Outlaw point, although it might be the truth.

It can't be clearly established that after market exhausts break the laws or not. The after market exhausts for the street are not proper race exhausts. Some Akrapovics are still street compliant. They still have resistance against noise and pollution.
Even otherwise, noise is measured in decibels through a point A to B, at a certain speed with the microphone being in the middle of A & B as the vehicle passes through... Pollution is measured at a certain speed, say 90 kmph.

So, if you ride a CBR 650F in a small city (with BSII applicable), with a after market exhaust, but at low speeds only, like 40-50 kmph, so you may well be following laws, because Indian laws test this at 90 kmph (BSII), and you might not be polluting beyond that anyways.

In the end, we'll have to see what the pollution and sound norms are as per the Motor Vehicle Act, and as per how you ride, and not as per Bharat Standard (BS) II or III.
So, every after market exhaust at certain speeds, might be following laws and we might not know about it, unless we test it well.

maybe... but not because it kept pace with the 200ns! i was once keeping pace with an rd350 while on an rx100.. unfortunately my bike did not transform to the 350 and vice versa. the reason.. both of us were at 60kmph. similarly me on a d200 and folks on r15/cbr150's zipping past me on the highway.. reason, me at 85kmph them at 100kmph.
                          got it?

That display alone costs Rs.8000/-. It is fully animated. The numbers grow in size as speed increases. This bike has all modes and tech there is today. Ride modes, tcs, abs, slipper clutch, etc!

This is going to kill the competition as we know !
