Well, my point isnt about the affordability! It is about what they are offering which people arent able to digest! Locally made and cost being high is the heights!

No point in "maintaining brand image" and "exclusivity" if nobody actually buys the product.

Example: How did that "we're expensive because we're better, peasants need not apply" snobbish attitude work out for Kawasaki, specifically with their midsize bikes? Spoiler alert: not well. If Kawasaki wanted exclusivity, they got it: almost nobody bought the idiotically-priced Versys 300, though I'm sure it's a very good bike.

And now compare with KTM, who didn't give a monkeys whether their bikes were ridden by teenage squids or serious track-day purists or just bikers that wanted their office commute to be a little more fun. Besides, many of those teenage squids of today may mature up and become serious bikers tomorrow. I'm sure at least half of us started out as squidding idiots popping wheelies on the way to college But I digress.

At the end of the day, these companies exist to make money. If you put out a product and hardly anybody buys it, it's a failure, end of story.

"Exclusivity" and "rarity" are for the Rolls-Royces, Paganis, yacht-builders and so on. Not for 300cc mass-market commuter motorcycles.

It's an interesting experiment by BMW to watch unfold. And if successful, it widens the market, makes others take notice and realize that many of us do want a sport bike that isn't a fire-breathing track-day monster, that we could ride daily as well as hit the twisties on the weekend. If BMW pulls this off, it will benefit us all

Well I am rather unsurprised by the pricing but the VFM products are the KTM twins. To my understanding it all comes down quality assurance and the brand together which we pay for any product. To my understanding the G310 twins are world wide same quality and price for that matter justifies. If you compare the quality of automobiles in India v/s Europe there are leaps and bounds difference. You may argue it’s more or less the same, but the fact remains that Europe or US regulations have huge list of norms for the manufacturers to comply with. Be it safety norms, material standards, quality standards and more so, they have it all covered, making sure that the product reaching the hands of the customer must be flawless. Hence to my understanding it’s for the quality product and the brand that it associates with that we pay for.

But my heart still cries why BMW!!! And now to add fuel to the fire... Kawasaki launched the ninja 300 with ABS at 2.98L.

Recently read an article about Kawasaki’s localisation for ninja 300 and its analysis. There it had mentioned that would Kawasaki be able to pull down the heavy price tag for the ninja 300 will customers be happy to take the 300 knowing very well that it’s successor the 400 is a much more advanced machine. But now I clearly understand Kawasaki was just waiting for BMW launch to their product, so they can revive the old 300 by pricing it Just below the G310 twins. And why not a brilliant move, now those who were eying for the 310 would take the twin cylinder ninja 300 instead.

Today we see more KTM's (light on pocket) and Enfields (self start feature ) on road. Thanks to pricing there wont be many BMWs on road. only those who truly knows what BMWs are known for...!

NO doubt KTM's are totally VFM here but before making statements just visit BMW dealer and see yourself the quality they're offering. compare 1200GS and g310GS side by side. the plastics, the paint, toggle switches everything looks and feels same. and that's BMW!
even kawasaki versys 300x costs a lakh more than what BMW is offering.

if money is your concern you know where to go.. if quality is your concern.. then here it is. Also some says 3 some says 2.. im not sure but BMW is offering 2/3 years- unlimited kms warranty at no extra cost.

last year BMW released new fully digital display for 1200GS and for the other bikes also as an optional upgrade. (just google it) If it will be available in future for baby GS, then bang! cuz that pod is way better than that of KTM's.
Everyone here in this forum would have definitely ridden many premium bikes like Kawasaki, Triumph, Ducati, MV. Everyone are familiar with premium offerings. So near to 4 lakh and 5 lakh, these 2 bikes must offer loads and loads of quality and premiumness

I have taken test ride of Apache 310RR, I pretty much have an idea what kind of performance and characteristics that BMW's cheap twin offerings will provide.

Well, well, well, I just finished by Test Ride of the 310GS which I had booked a couple of days after the announcement. The Tusker Motorrad who is their dealer in BLR was crowded with wannabes and what not. The bike (The GS) looks quite good and is bigger in flesh than seen on pics. They appear to be well made and give an imposing presence for a 300cc bike as they include the luggage rack. The seat height was little higher and I was just about to reach my toes to the ground, the seating position is very comfortable and the seats are nice and firm. The handle bars are at the right position with enough reach. The BMW branding on the fairing looks cool along with those gold forks and offroad tyres looks chunky on the bike.

I had to wait for my turn as there was heavy rush for TD today, being the weekend but since I got there early I was able to get my chance after 30mins. This where I was left wanting, the ride was plush and the bike picks off evenly without any urgency but I found the initial torque much diminished to my liking and though my ride was short 5 min one I could notice that it was not happy around corners, probably because of the long wheel base and the suspension is too soft and with little aggressive riding it shows up in handling. The brakes are just ok but the gear shifts were really smooth but overall it felt like a big body on a tiny engine, and being a single it just didn't feel like I had enough torque. The Bike can easily take a pillion and can accommodate 3rd party panniers. I even stood up during the test ride but the position didn't feel comfortable.

All this is may be ok but the on road price for this is huge, i.e. 4.4L and for white color is it 15K more. This price tag, I think is too much considering what it offers, so I am going to cancel my booking.

Attaching some pics of the bike at the dealer-

I really do not understand the reasoning that BMW is a premium brand and thats why they priced it higher!

In US KTM and BMW are both imported from India and are priced almost same(read somewhere that BMW is priced less than KTM there).

So In US both brands are same but in India BMW is more premium??
                Seriously??

In the USA BMW is no where near as premium a brand as in India. Lots of upper middle class people can afford a BMW ther which is not the case here. Secondly, KTM never developed a premium image in India since its launch was with the relatively affordable Dukes.

BMW's decision of pricing for these 310s will definitely keep them away from squids but sadly it most likely will keep them away from true enthusiasts as they will find the RR310/Duke390/RC390 to make far more sense than these.

I won't be surprised if BMW does a price cut of both the bikes anytime soon.

Kawasaki Ninja has always been a premium name in motorcycling in India. And a twin cylinder 300 cc CKD unit is avilable at a lesser price.
So even if someone is buying a bike for showoff only , Ninja makes more sense.

In India if someone is spending 3.5 lacs on a bike he will not spend it blindly!

Agree, pricing for India will mean bad sales in my opinion with many cheaper options out there providing the same value but I don't think BMW will care, it seems to me they are focusing a lot more on other markets with this bike.
