  • Formula One is not a sport, says ministry

Formula One is not a sport, says ministryThe basic premise of the ministry is that F1 is not needed in India and the money can be spent on development of disciplines which have a wider base in the country, ministry sources said. The proposed F1 race does not satisfy conditions which focus on human endeavour for excelling in competition with others, keeping in view the whole sports movement from Olympics downwards
What a shocker !!! Somehow in India we always rubbish down the obvious and give "other developments" as the reason. Oh yeah, putting up statues for thousands of crores of rupees does contribute to the development. The scandals, blackmoney and dunno what else does contribute to the development of the country. Bravo. Why should we promote a sport of International Status? We can spend that money on hockey and football like we have been doing always. Right?

When will the politicians stop giving up such stupid excuses to satisfy their means (or avenge their dissatisfaction for probably not being bribed) .

The Government has a point in saying that it will impact the development of other sports, but what the hell are they actually doing for the OTHER SPORTS!
I know what they are doing: sending the national hockey team in trucks, not having proper receptions for sportsmen who achieve accolades for the country at international events, etc..

Formula 1 is definitely an expensive affair, but it is largely revenue earning as well.. There is so much revenue generated from tourism & hospitality, that not many other sports can generate (in India)..

Oh yeah, F1 is not a sport!!! And so the millions watching it all over the world and the people promoting it like Bernie Ecclestone or our own Vijay Mallya are "Morons". And all that R&D that goes into the development of an F1 car and the respective technologies filtering down to the road cars is all rubbish!!!

These fockers need to learn how much it can promote tourism by looking at Shanghai, Abu-Dhabi, Turkey or Malaysia!

F1 is not a sport , Just because of these kind of politicians we are still lacking from the international standards in every field , automobile sector is growing rapidly in India . People are mulling over cars & bikes in India ,even recession has failed to stop people from buying pricey cars & bikes in our country and overall motorsport sector is still what our gen x wants to be improved a lot. These people are saying it'll not prove to be a development factor

Really sad news but lets hope for the best

I can see the general mood of the people generated by this excellent piece of news. Where did you find this Leon? Good one nonetheless.

It is true that F1 will not contribute to other sports. But then in the same vein swimming does not contribute to tennis. Hence swimming should not be considered a sport to promote tennis or vice versa.

This is called short sightedness of a government totally lacking in any kind of vision. F1 is by far the most watched televised programme in the world! Imagine the spin offs from hosting such an event!

India is hosting the Commonwealth Games. Which is going to be a HUGE fiasco due to lack of preparation. It is also going to be a financial fiasco since it is NOT a revenue earner. But F1 generates more revenue than most other sports. But this is Babudom land. Who is gonna teach them what!
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

                    @ Ken : +1

Came across this news on TOI online this morning. Has the ministry not heard of the word 'entertainment'? Or maybe they lack a gland that generates adrenaline. Or maybe, just maybe, the buck stops at cricket! Funny then, that Singapore and Abu Dhabi chose to have a circuit built, and millions spent, on a Non-sporting sport - especially when neither of them have any representation (so to say) in Formula 1.
How I earnestly wish we were not a democracy!

Forgive me gentlemen if I sound like an alien but I would agree a lot with what the ministry has said. I would not put my reasons here (Actually I dare not ) but to me F1 is pure entertainment and does not involves the criteria to be labeled a sport.

^^^okay, isn't entertainment an objective of any sport?

If you apply this formula, then i don't think you can call anything sport.

                              F1 is not a sport.

MotoGP/WSBK are sport.. so build a race track for MotoGP.

But heck.. both F1 and MotoGP share almost same track specifications.

alright then, F1 is a sport (so much for MotoGP )

                              alright, j/k.

If they are concerned bout other sports then why the Dr. Ambedkar Football Stadium wasn't prepared for Nehru Cup Matches. The grass was more than ankle high for International Matches. Govt Suxx.
