I ALWAYS fill at Shell unless I've literally run out somewhere. In which case I add a couple of litres until I can hit Shell.

What?!?! Thats honestly bizarre. Which Shell have you been filling from? And which BP? I fill it at the Shell on Vittal Mallya and thats excellent. Twice during long distance trips I've been able to see the difference. My Dad filled in there and drove to Chennai in his Honda City touching speeds of 140 and constantly cruising at 120 and still he got 16 kmpl. This was 2 more than when he came from Chennai. I once drove from Chennai in a Wagon R and got only 12.5 kmpl. On the way back I filled at Shell near Electronic City and I got a mileage of 17!!! Thats a 40% increase in efficiency. Not to mention the fact that the car feels noticeably more peppy. Also, my bike feels a lot smoother when I fill at Shell and a lot of engine noise reduces.

I swear by the two Shell bunks mentioned above. IOC I stay away from like the plague. BP and HP I go to only when I absolutely must. Ironically the pump (BP?) bang next to the Indranagar RTO probably has the worst fuel I have ever come across. And of the BPs, I think the one on St.Mark's road is decent.

What I find amazing is that now we're getting fleeced on 3 separate counts.

1) We are paying a killer amount for fuel per litre
2) The fuel we are paying for is all adulterated to different degrees (I've found the worst offenders without doubt to be in Chennai. I've ALWAYS had MUCH better fuel in Delhi and Bangalore)
3) Now we aren't even getting the right volume of fuel!!

A triple whammy!

Its downright ridiculous. So now, for Rs.65 (in Bangalore) we get what is actually much less than a litre of fuel (since its been adulterated) and we're supposed to feel lucky if we actually even get a full litre?!?!

With all the graft happening all the time, the biggest and worst mafia, comparable to real-estate, is the fuel mafia.

Fact is i avoid all BP HP IOBunks, but saw in this thread about COCO s being best, i was searching on this and saw this , it says BP Bunk in 100 ft Road Koramangala is COCO bunk will try this bunk next time. its almost 2km away from my route to office

Ketan I know this petrol pump, not recommended. I also know that elderly guy and he had tried to distract me once, but I normally ride listening to music and so whenever I pull into any fuel pump I normally am not distracted by people since I am already listening to music and I just ignore anyone except the guy holding the petrol hose...

In mahim I fill at the HP pump on sitladevi road(next to kesari travels). Another HP pump at the shobha restaurant junction in city light is also a good one.

Another good pump in Bandra is the HP fuel station near the SV road, linkroad and turner road junction. It has all those automation thingies that dk mentioned.

In general my experience has been good with HP pumps in mumbai. But I stick to the trusted outlets mentioned above...

Would like to share a few thoughts about how to avoid these petrol thefts.(Source: From the news crew who did the sting operation)

1.Make sure the attendant holds the petrol gun upright while filling the fuel.
2.Make sure the the clamp in the petrol gun doesn't come back to its rest position before the attendant takes out the gun from the tank or the meter stops counting.
3.Make sure he doesn't apply pressure by hand or leg on the fuel pipe.
4.If possible check the quantity from the smaller display(Not the usual display that the petrol pump guys expects us to see before filling).You can find that display somewhere near the petrol gun.The smaller display counts the quantity that the pump guys take in for their account.
5.Try filling fuel for the same quantity for about 3-4 times and check for the fuel efficiency.

1.HP bunk on MES Rd(Near Mathikere)
2.Indian oil bunk on New BEL Road
3.IBP pump near Guttahalli and Harishchandra Ghat
4.HP pump in Nandini Layout.
5.Hp pump on Rajkumar Road,next to VST
6.BP and IOC in Toll gate(Magadi Road)

Yes for all Bikes you should not use the tank as a measuring unit. Tank capacity of 16Ltrs will always hold more if you fill it to Brim. It says a capacity of 16Ltrs to have some breathing space also for safety purpose.

I got cheated once at BP bunk near BTM layout same trick i said 500 he acted as if he heard its 100 and filled 100 first which never went in.
I found a shell bunk nearby in Bull temple road will always go there .

only officially it's 15 liter. I have filled 1000 Rs. ~17L petrol couple times. Tank's capacity to the brim is around 18 liters.

FZ can hold 12+1(Reserve)

officially the pulsar tank capacity is 15ltr.

@yellowspunk and madhav krishna: doubtful that p150\180 can hold that much. My bike having biggest tank among local 150's has company specified capacity of around 16 ltr incl reserve....but fill it to the brim and it can take not more than 20 ltr as per a few user claims including errors.

Well AFAIK a pulsar can hold 18 litres easily.
Well if you are strong enough go on a fight. In such cases you can complaint to higher authorities (not those at the petrol bunk)

can pulsar 150/180 tank hold 18litres of petrol?!
i was standing in line @ a bunk near my place and the guy in front a pulsar 150 or 180 told the attendant to do full tank. and the reading @ the end showed 18litres. it dint strike me then. that guy paid and went off. i filled for 250rs @ that bunk. if he is cheating then my bike should be hitting reserve sooner than later.

i previously did full tank with my fz @ a company outlet of BP and it accurately stopped @ 12 odd litres for full tank with tank capacity being 12l.

MY advice would be to fill from petrol bunks which you trust (preferably shell). Always try to fill full tank when you hit reserve. Keep a note of the amount of petrol gulped down so that next time when you fill your tank you will have an idea of estimated fuel.

Like in my case my bike gulps down nearly Rs.850 petrol to tank up. So whenever i fill the petrol if it costs me higher than 900 to tank up i will easily come to know that i have been cheated somehow.

My only advice is to fill full tank all the time when you hit reserve.

I think I might have encountered a new type of cheating. I had filled up for rs. 200 i.e. ~3ltr at some bunk on SH17, approximately after riding 45-50 kms in reserve. Once I left the bunk, I hit reserve again after only 40 kms....thats atleast 30-40 kms before expected, that too under continuous highway riding!!!! My biek is a almost new gs150r...least mileage of 40kmpl.

Back when I was filling up, I noticed that the bunk attendant made a sharp jerk at the pipe sometime during the filling and I noticed it made a gap at the junction between the pipe and the gun. At the same time, I noticed the sound of petrol flowing started to lessen and stopped while the meter ran for atleast 1/2-1 ltr more. My mind was elsewhere to think anything suspicious of this at that time. But, it became apparent that either the meter or the filling gun or both had been tampered after I had ridden ~ 40 kms away.

There is, at most, negligible calculation error on my side. I was not distracted from the meter reading or the gun handling. I saw the amount set to 200 and petrol at 0 before filling. I noticed the attendant had locked the gun trigger and his hand was away from it when filling. It wasnt in an isolated area, it was on the highway....so meter tampering cannot be more than 10% even by conservative estimates. Nothing else was out of place other than the jerk at the pipe made midway by the attendant.

So, how do I explain the loss of atleast a liter of fuel?
Im thinking something is up with the jerking. Maybe the gun was tampered to unlock the trigger upon a sharp jerking motion. Maybe there was some cutoff in the pipe-gun junction which stopped fuel from flowing after the jerk. I dont know. Anyone else experienced this?
