Hmmmmm, this has been widely discussed on the forums here...anywaym make a search for "how to choose helmets" on google & u shud do good. Anyway, will add to POwerslave's valuable suggestions.
As for "scratch-less visors" they r scratchless only in controlled dust free regions (ie not india!!)- I got myself a Bieffe BR15 with a "made in italy" visor but the visor does get scracthed up (almost more easily than others!) though the vision is more clearer. Make sure to protect expensive helmets with a helmet sack/bag to carry them around in.
As for vents, take a helmet with a chin-vent as minimum pre-requisite. This helps the visor to not get fogged up during winters & maintain clear vision.
Always test the level of fit on ur head- not too tight, not too loose. make a search on how to ascertain the perfect fit- basically it should not come off ur head if u pull it upwarsd & towards the front.
Keep ur helmet's visibility high esp for night driving.

As for custom painting, u can give it to me!! [:P]...me done already three jobs (1 u can see as my avatar) & the last one was the best job...but seriously, if u know how to handle paints & have patience, u can do it urself with primers, enamels, lacquers, brushes, spray guns etc etc...I prefer hand painted jobs cos of the exclusivity it brinsg abt...
    But safety first guys...safety...
With great power, comes great responsibility- to man, machine and especially to mother nature.

i have always been wearing a helmet since i have got the bike..now it feels weird riding without the helmet even for 5 min.consider this,if bikers all across the world wear a helmet, ALL of them cant be wrong...
i think this rule must be enforced strictly, but some time must be given to people to get in line.
after all a liberal law strictly enforced is better than a strict law that is loosely enforced.
there are umpteen number of posts regardin the need for helmet.
for those who arent convinced, here is a starter..if u still arent convinced then the cops fining you is bound to...

however, its kinda weird to enforce this for pillion riders as well.are we expected to carry a spare helmet everywhere we go or is a person to whom we might give a lift supposed to keep one?

A]It's better to sweat than to bleed .
Corollary:Better bad hair than a badly bleeding head .

B]Helmets cannot save you from any and every accident . But they do reduce the chances of that drastically , especially that of becoming a vegetable .

To say that helmets won;t save you from death under a 10 tonne truck is true , but then on the same note , a bullet-proof vest wont save you from a nuke blast . Would you then refuse to wear a bullet proof vest ? or say you wont drive a bullet proof car since it can't save a you from the H-bomb ? Would you leave your house unlocked saying that thieves will break the lock anway , so why bother to lock the house ?

Helmets may not save broken you from broken limbs for that you need armoured jackets and pants , gloves etc . I intend to buy those too , in time .
Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of the time he will pick himself up and continue on.

                              guys,
you can wear a helmet if you wanna be safe.I have seen people die from a simple fall down at just 20 kmph, even before i started riding.I have been using my helmet ever since i started riding.
And yes of course i survived after my latest accident even after a 100 m drag on the tarmac.in fact i was rolling like a ball.i had kept my both arms close to my chest. It was just a reflex action.
Previously i had an accident in the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway, back in 2001, when i was returning to my room after visiting a friend at BTM layout.Unfortunately, i was not wearing my helmet coz my room mate had gone to goa, with my helmet.
A car rammed into me-they were drunk.i flew off, landed with both my hands first and ramming my head on the road.
The result- i was in a comma for five days, my both shoulder blades were badly ruptured, both shoulder sockets were badly out of place, and my future turned upside down.
My parents were left in deep despair, i had to leave my Engineering Course at M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology,That too in 5th Sem,i was under rigorous treatment for the next five months, was not able to speak properly or control my body body functions like urination and saliva from my mouth. And now am left with Stuttering here.
Of course, i came back riding my dad's Yezdi in the seventh month-the doctors had assured my dad that i won't be able to do things by myself for at least the next 18 months!
Joined for B.Sc Electronics at a near by college in Trivandrum-my home place.

Ended up in the Construction Industry, Was Nominated as PRESIDENT of the Kerals Cement Dealers Association,Trivandrum unit, and now here in Dubai doing market study to start up my own Construction Company here.
All this happened just because i didn't have my helmet.

An accident can happen any time in India-there is no lane discipline,no good roads and its a place where everybody wants to be Ralf Schumacker/Valentino Rossi !

It had just given an outline above of my life coz, just to make you aware of the consequence of NOT WEARING any safety Gadget. At least i have lived twice to tell you about it.

Everyday i pray to god that it should not happen to anybody.
I do advice people who speed up like anything on their new bikes just to show-off.That too in heavy traffic.

And yes, about the hair problem.I am happy to tell you that i have become almost Bald bue to my continuous use of helmet. Now i carry a comb around to comb my big moustache and eyebrows !!!!
                              Believe me.
Its better to use a helmet with enough air vents or else you will soon join me for a company!!.

you can use helmet and other safety gear if you want to be safe or
Better don't use it if you want to co-operate with the Government programme to bring down population.SMALL DROPLETS MAKE THE MIGHTY OCEAN.
