      • The Videocon V6200 Ducati series Mobile Phone - in-depth review

Introduction: Though Videocon is a name that almost everybody in India is aware of when it comes to household appliances, it evoked very few emotions within us when we heard that they are going to launch a mobile phone that is specially designed for bikers. A phone with a few jazzy motorcycling games or a biker theme at best is what we thought this phone would have, but when we finally got our hands on the phone we were surprised. On paper, the Videocon V6200 Ducati Edition phone to be a feature-packed phone, but will it deliver what it promised? We tried to find out:

What’s in the box?: It comes in a stylish thick cardboard box, almost ready to be used as a gift box. But the real deal is inside the box, so here is the list of goodies that are part of the standard package:
        1. Handset.
        2. Charging Adaptor.
        3. USB Charger.
        4. 2 Headsets: Headset & Sportz Headset.
        5. 3.5 mm headset connector.
        6. Data Cable.
        7. User Manual.
        8. Warranty Card.
        9. Service Center Directory.

        Additional Sports Accessories:
        1. Adventure Flask.
        2. Arm Band with Ducati and Videocon logos

        Special Content:
        1. Pre-bundled 4GB MicroSD Card pre-loaded with life time validity of MAP MY INDIA.
        2. Mo-biking user guide and PC Suite.
        3. CD containing:
        a. Pictures & Videos of Ducati Bikes.
        b. GPS User Manual.
        c. Phone Suite.
        d. Phone User Manual

Design and build: The Videocon V6200 is a candybar phone with anti-slip grip, shockproof screw-framed body, and rubberized panels with steel side skirting. With features like shock and water resistance, the V6200 has been marketed as a rugged phone and it actually feels like one when you hold it in your hands; it gives you a very solid, sturdy feel. There are no user-removable body parts and everything is concealed within a screw-framed metal body that improves its overall sturdiness. Even the battery and memory card are non-user-replaceable. The phone weighs roughly 110 g and has the following dimensions: 118 x 53 x 15.3 mm. The primary screen is a 6.4 cm TFT screen with an additional customizable OLED (organic light emitting diode) screen on the back which not only makes the phone look super cool but also adds to the overall usability of the phone.

The keys and buttons on the claimed dust-resistant alphanumeric keypad are well spaced apart and quite useful even for those who do a lot of messaging and typing on the phone. There are 4 dedicated keys on four different sides of the phone, each dedicated to a separate function or a set of function. The right upper key is for the dual-LED torch which is provided at the top of the phone. The torch itself is a quite bright and the best thing about the torch is that it works even when the phone is in switched off mode, so it will still work as a standalone torch even when you have switched off your cell phone to avoid that goddamn phone call from your boss. However we would have loved to be in an on-off mode because right now the phone requires us to keep holding the torch key down for the duration we want the light. No entirely convenient if you want to fix your bike solo in the middle of the night, but well room for improvements are always there. The right lower key is to operate the camera. The camera on this phone is a 2 MP one without flash or autofocus, but a relatively decent picture quality which we will discuss about later. The left lower shortcut key has been assigned the job of operating the GPS, so with just one touch of your finger you can open the GPS system with maps and voice navigation by Map My India. The fourth and most useful shortcut key is located at the left upper corner of the phone and is used to toggle between GPS coordinates, thermometer, barometer, altimeter display on the OLED screen on the back, so again you have all these cool features available with just one touch of your finger.

The V6200 also comes bundled with 4 GB memory card and has internal memory of 32 mb. There are 2 different earphones provided with the phone (one standard and one ‘sports’). The sound quality from both these earphones leaves a lot to be desired, but then you have a 3.5 mm adapter so you can use some good quality aftermarket headphones/earphones/earplugs to listen to your favorite music. The internal loudspeaker is quite loud and offers decent sound quality.

Hardware/software: The V6200 phone works on MTK 6235 chipset based OS, Nucleus RTOS.

Functions/Features: This phone primarily has 3 different operating modes: Phone, Fun, and Sports. As the names suggest, each mode has different features according to its characteristics. For example, the phone mode has all those basic features that you would see in any mobile phone like messaging, phonebook, call logs, settings, Bluetooth, etc. The Fun mode is the house of all the multimedia and entertainment features of the phone like music player, video player/recorder, camera, melody composer, FM with scheduled FM recording (another plus point of the phone).

But the main USP of this phone is its sports mode, a house for all the high-tech features like GPS with life-time validity MMI maps with voice navigation, thermometer, Ultraviolet light meter, pedometer, altimeter (which shows altitude through 2 different ways, by GPS and by atmospheric pressure), and digital compass. With Pedometer feature on, you can count the number of steps you have taken while walking and also measure the distance you have traveled. The digital compass, altimeter, and barometer are the same as on the OLED screen but with different display. Also the altimeter here shows the altitude through GPS as well as through atmospheric pressure. The one feature that is not displayed on the OLED screen is the UV meter with which you can measure the amount of harmful UV rays in the sunlight and take appropriate precautionary measures before going out in the sunlight.

GPS: If you ask people what is the best feature of this phone, 99 out of 100 times you would get GPS as the answer and rightly so, this is the feature that every biker or any adventure-loving guy would want to get his hands on. With just one touch, you have preloaded Map My India maps (among the best in India when it comes to GPS devices) with life-time free voice-navigation that not only tells your exact position on this planet but also helps you navigate in an unfamiliar territory within India, so you don’t waste your precious time asking for the directions when are in hurry to attend that job interview. The GPS system also displays your real-time actual speed while in motion and also the estimated time remaining to reach your destination. Today, any standalone GPS device would easily cost you 5-10K minimum; in fact, the TrailBlazer from Map My India costs around INR 18,900, but here you are getting a mobile phone with fully functional GPS device in less than 10,000 bucks!!! What more you can ask for?

        GPS

Additional features: The V6200 also comes bundled with some handy add-on features like call-cheat with which you can play selected audio files in the background during a call, giving your listener the impression that you are stuck in a traffic jam or sitting in a restaurant/pub while actually you are not. There is E-book reader, currency converter, stop watch, world clock, and unit converter.

        Other features

PC Suite: Videocon has made the life easier by providing the PC Suite for the V6200 phone. Not only it can be used to explore the phone contents when connected to the PC, you can also manage your phonebook and messages with the help of the PC suite. You can also use the V6200 as internet modem for your laptop/PC with the PC suite.

        PC suite

Camera Quality: The camera in V6200 can surprise you with its picture quality. For a 2 MP camera without autofocus, the picture quality was reasonably good. The camera can also record video in 320 x 240 resolution and you can zoom-in and zoom-out while recording the video. The camera can also be used as webcam when connected to a PC or laptop.

Battery Life: On paper, the V6200 is fitted with a 1030 mAH battery that offers up to 6 hours talk time and up to 400 hours standby time. During our use, we found the battery life of V6200 to be at par with most of the multimedia phones available in the market. With moderate usage, mostly calls and to a large extent GPS usage, we could use the phone for full 2 days. The low-battery warning sign comes up only when the battery indicator on the phone screen goes completely blank, so your phone is still usable when it shows the battery to be totally out of charge, though it can easily be misleading.

The Ducati Connection: The V6200 is an official Ducati branded product and Videocon has been licensed by Ducati to use their logo on the phone. While it may not sound a big deal at first, but if you think an officially licensed product from Ducati has to hold some mettle in it. It is good for what it does and it does what a biker would want to do, the exact philosophy that Ducati preached out for when it sells its bikes.

Verdict: Two thumbs up for Videocon V6200 Ducati Edition Phone, a mobile phone that comes with a price tag of slightly above 8.5 K and so many features and goodies. This is basically a must-have outdoor gadget which luckily also works as a full-fledged mobile phone. If you are an outdoor guy, this is the ideal tool for you to keep with you whenever you are out there on the road or in the mountains. It can make sure that you are not lost in the process of trying to discover yourself. On top of that, it will even take the abuse you may throw at it. There is hardly any other product in the market that offers all these goodies in sub 10K price range.

Videocon has made their intentions clear with the launch of V6200 that they are here to play a big game. This is the first handset from the Mo-Biking series by Videocon and in future there are going to be more mobile phones in this series with better features to compete with the already established products in the market in different segments.

For: The price, rugged shockproof body with features such as GPS with MMI maps and voice navigation, thermometer, barometer, altimeter, and so on… and of course the Ducati connection.

Against: No dual SIM compatibility, no EDGE compatibility. There is no flash with the camera, wish they had kept the dual-LED torch on the backside of the phone and used it as flash also.

        • Thanks for the review Sunil! Though the phone is great, but I would have preferred it be a Ducati red, something which Videocon might do with the next phone in the series!

I'll try it with the AC ON at my place. Will try to click a pic with both the indicators in frame(AC and Phone) like Sunil has done in his review.

yea dude as i explained in my earlier post the temp recorded in mumbai may be 20-22 at a given time....but temps recorded are at given place so in your case place may vary...if bbc says mumbai temp is 22 degree c that doesnt mean its 22 in entire mumbai maybe your place will be 25 degree ....thats why temp recording in mumbai are set up at two places santacruz and colaba and the mean is taken as temp of mumbai....
