^^ I got a similar reply from one of the sellers @ Quikr . com

Though he insisted on selling through VPP option in Ebay.

No chance for mistakes and i politely ignored the deal.

Yes! How come all the replies have the same stuff written in them? They are in UK&someone will take care of the shipping, shipping agency etc. same reply for every bike!
Anyways, good that this thread came up-if it helped in saving even 1 person's hard earned money, it is worth all our effort! Cheers to xBhp!

guys i suggest that everyone here should seek help and guidance from someone who actually knows these things.

few problems which i saw in this thread are.

            1. thinking of importing a R6 or CBR600RR at whatever the price. it is IMPOSSIBLE to get it through a legal route. until n unless there is a transfer of residence, a person CAN NOT import a bike below 800cc in India. SIMPLE.

so most of the 600s u see running around are either through TR or have been brought down in CKD form.

Bringing the bike in CKD form means, that you have to smuggle every part of the bike at different times hoping that it clears the customs. then you have to find a competent mechanic who can assemble the entire bike for you.

and this is the easy part. the fun begins when you try getting the papers made for this "bike". on papers the bike doesnt exist as you have brought it in multiple pieces as spare parts. its not allowed otherwise to bring in a CKD bike until and unless you have a license to import and assemble the bike.

            2. in the link provided by samarth its clearly mentioned that the bike will be levied with close to 145% duty. the new rules which have come in last month state that the duty is 180% for all used bikes and cars. and it doesn't matter what invoice you have OR at what price you have bought the vehicle, the valuation is done here according to their norms.

would strongly recommend everyone to check, re-check and double check their info with people with enough knowledge about imports. as a wise man once said "half knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge"

if anyone still has some queries regarding imports of these bikes OR cars, feel free to pm me. would love to clarify your doubts to the best of my ability.

Has custom duty on import of new vehicle is reduced..? As per the attachment provided my SAMARTH...it says 88 % on a vehicles which had not been registered abroad..!! I guess it was 105% if im not wrong here...

Apart from the scam guys, sometimes there are genuine sellers who sell off at rock bottom prices, for various reasons (immediate need for money, lack of knowledge of market rates etc.), but even if we do buy a 2nd hand bike which originally costed say 12000$, we would have to pay up the duty based on the original price, with a depreciation of 3-4% every quarter, based on the rules in the link posted previously by Samarth. So, even if someone buys a bike for say 3000$, duty would be more than 6000$, which ultimately does make it outrightly expensive. So, IMO buy a bike where you stay-importing does not make sense!

The sites are for real, these dudes who are running scams use it for their advantage.

This method of importing is not legal.... once you assemble the bike, you have to take it to ARAI for approval of road worthiness. At which point ARAI will treat the vehicle not worthy of indian roads because of stupid regulations like a saree guard, bracket for front number plates etc.

So stay clear of these idiots and import a CBU....

I have gone through a few postings here about importing a bike in India. I have 2 Bikes, Suzuki GSXR-600 and a Harley Davidson 883. I am originally from Pune and now live in San Jose California. I seriously want to get my Bikes to pune and hit the roads in India on them.

From what i understand, there are more complications when you are not doing a TR. I am NOT moving to Pune for good, but i still want to get my bikes there so when i am on my vacation i can ride them. Is it possible, has anyone done this before?? Can you please provide me with some details as to what i need and should do. I want to do everything legal, any information would be really appreciated.

                            Best regards,
                            Prashant

hi Prashant, how long are you going to be in India? if you are here for more than 3 months I would say its worth getting the bike to ride it around, if you are here any less then dont bother. You CANNOT leave the bike behind, you have to take it back with you when you leave the country or else they will not let you clear immigration on your way out.

Shipping EACH WAY for the bike from cali to India would run you about 1500 to 1800 by air and about 850 by sea, the sea route takes about 45 days from the east coast of US, should be a little less from Cali, since it will come via singapore.

The hassel of parking it in secure place is a big problem, people will invariably come and fiddle with the bike unless its behind a fence or you have a guard watching it for you.

Getting the Carnet bike cleared when you arrive will take 2 to 8 days, lots of bribes and such.... so think hard n long about what you are really trying to do.... i would say go to Europe with the bike, its a breeze... dont bother coming to India with it.

Thanks, that is what i have pretty much concluded. I cant be in India for more than a month maximum. Its not economical to get the bike even through sea route, but thanks for taking time to reply.

whats your conclusions... is it worth getting a bike imported or you want me pay the wholesome money here in India and have everything 100% legalized...

If i can bring one down.. then whats the best thing to do...
