THAR DESERT RIDE IN BURNING SUMMERS - 5 days

    • After a hectic and tiring day yesterday, we were in the mood to give ourselves a treat. We got up at 6 instead of the usual 5 and were on the bike after checking out and packing the bags (securing them by the Bungee cords and net) by 6:50 am. We were all ready to face the intense heat of Thar Desert that we would be witnessing long before noon. But the mood was light, as we knew traffic less good roads awaited us. This is what the bike was designed to do, it is a different bike negotiating potholes and inching its way from Home to Office in crazy Mumbai Traffic. But here the bike was in ihts element, a shark in water or a Camel in Desert - call it what you like.

One of the most amazing roads that I have ever driven on beckoned me for a sheer 105 kilometers of bliss on the way to Barmer. The long straight traffic less 2 laner put away all thoughts and apprehension. I just put the 1800 cc engine at work and leaving tyre marks on the asphalt, we just shot into the road like a bullet. I opened the visor and let the wind hit my face and just put the bike on a steady 140 kmph broken only by a lone cowboy of a balero for some reason driving on the wrong side of the road and a group of animals deciding to cross. This happened every five minutes or so, so just keeping the eyes on the horizon, we just cruised along. I had to brake hard twice on this road, once when a bolero was intent on running me over and second when a Camel completely camouflaged in the sand dunes behind him decided to cross the road. Easy spotting them tiny goats but a giant Camel, yes sir I completely missed. Even these brakes made the ride interesting.

There were entire hills covered completely in sand giving them the appearance of oversized sand dunes from Jurassic era. The only thing that gave them away were babul shrubs on top of these hills. While all around us we were surrounded by sand, surprising we had not a grain of sand on the roads. I never figured that one out. It could be the small shrubs and lone trees kept away the sand from flying in. Thank god, we did not run into a sand-storm (we had actually prepared for that eventuality as well). We saw beautiful huts complete with herds of cattle and even a boundary wall made of wood nudged under the shadow of the hills. Surprisingly it was not sunny yet and the sky was overcast. We realized that unlike yesterday, we had not yet started sweating, the wind blowing was surprising soft right in the middle of Thar. We stopped for Tea at a Dhaba, a little too sugary but would have to do. All important Electral and water was consumed.

                      • After refueling at Dechu and a leisurely tea and a thousand questions later we were on our way. After some 40 kilometers we saw a small hillock on the side of the road, which would take some 10 minutes to climb but commanded a panoramic view of the entire region and with the setting sun, we wanted to take some pictures. The greenish tinge picture in the sun that you saw earlier was taken here. We climbed up and clicked several pictures. We then noticed a small gravelly path coming from the road to the back of the hill leading up to a small temple on the top. We decided to attempt taking the bike up the hill. With the setting sun, we thought the pictures would be amazing. The road was barely motorable till 70pct of the way, after which the rear tyre found itself in half a foot of gravel.

Both of us along with the 1800cc engine working together were still not able to pull the bike out. The sound from the engine thankfully brought the people out from the temple who promptly helped us out. We requested them to take several pictures of ours and they took some really awesome images.

They helped us to get back on the road and we had at least five of these good Samaritans running with the bike till we were on the firm asphalt. Sun had begun to set and we had another 110 km to go and night driving is a pain on all roads but an absolute sore on a divider less 2 laner. It was dark in exactly 20 minutes and soon after we hit a bad patch of road. After driving on some amazing roads, it felt almost like a stab in the back to have bad roads right at dusk.

Drivers all over India and especially in Rajasthan should be given a long lecture on low beam driving. I was blind every-time a car crossed. After a while I started closing one eye so that at least one eye would be able to see after the car passed. The average speed dropped to a shade under 60 kmph and after a terrible terrible ride which left me panting we reached Jodhpur at 845pm. It was a combination of bad road, high beam and night driving that got us tired on our shortest ride. We had plans to roam around in the city and also had a dinner invitation. All we did was reach the hotel at 930pm, eat, drink and sleep. Good bye day 3.
