RD350 Rebuild Story
Here goes...been waiting for a long time now.anyway the bugger entered my life about 11 years back when I was still in school(the mechanic still reminds me the first time I came to him in uniform)....yeah I know illegal and the love hate relationship began.anyway it was a little to early with the kind of pockets we had then.....and buying it was easy than running it and many a times you ended up using your tuition money to keep em running and still, was being towed home by my friends arm on their scooters.didn't know shit about what a 2 stroke is(actually ran it without 2T for the first few months),seized it,rebuilt it after 2 months....and cursed everyone from the mechanic to god......got around to selling it a couple of times......even sold it at night but refused to hand it over in the morning(paid twice the earnest money)...bumped into all sorts of weirdos......sat in the rain with the mechanic and even though a vegetarian had to sit and get it serviced behind a meat market with headless chickens being chased by dogs YUCK!!!anyway it never let go of me.....almost a vikram-betaal relationship.got a car and oh what a relief!finally.... reach your destination in style,no more braving the elements and the Constant look out for relatives when with your GF!still gave it a condescending kick once in a while.....college came and went.......sometimes that itch would come back but the old memories would make my hair bristle and I would abandon any long ride plans.then in 2008 I thought why not do a complete top down rebuild and take out all the inherent flaws.left it for dismantling with the mechanic and forgot about it.there it lay for full 4 years.....waiting and waiting......even the mechanic stopped asking.then in 2011 DEC itch returns!i cal up the mechanic and tell him we are going to start the rebuild just let me order parts online.....right?....wrong!.....the parts started arriving since then and a few to finish are still in transit!so the rebuild began around mid of 2013......almost nearing completion now.you would ask why such a long time to get parts?well for one I DO NOT trust parts available in India and secondly a lot of research went into removing some of the weaknesses of 1975 era so actually had to order parts which were upgrades.flaws in suspension, transmission, clutch, top end, braking, electrical etc as well as the aesthetics of the mcycle(looked literally like a rajdoot!) had to be removed and the tech upgraded to 2013 and a cafe racer look.anyway now that we are almost through i can start by unveiling the parts and processes so please bear with me.Last edited by biker_350; 12-26-2013, 09:21 PM.Tags: None

Re: RD350 Phoenix
Ok i will start with the safety aspect first.since the start i had found the braking and lighting followed by suspension not to my liking.so after a lot of searching around i zeroed in on the XS series of front dual discs, with mABS with obviously a suspension upgrade, had to move to 19". Front rim coz of 64 spoke hub and larger discs which would not have gone with the stock rim and for the rear, vesrah brake shoes with a new hub.second i found the light to be pretty sub standard and again a safety issue and i did not want to go for HID etc...so going through different forums i zeroed in on the GE nighthawk (Amazon.com: GE 69821 Nighthawk 7" Round LED Headlamp: Automotive) and i must say it was an investment worth it!truly futuristic at 5600 kelvin it is day light, with minimal power consumption.pardon the dirt and scratches, result of a 2 year wait, whole bike will be dismantled cleaned and painted and then reassembled later.

Re: RD350 Phoenix
How about employing a FI system or a direct injection system instead of the carb? I have always dreamt of a greener and more fuel efficient 2 stroke. 2 strokes doesn't have a flawless lubrication system and it also wastes unburnt fuel-air mixture, it would be great if there is a solution for this for our yesteryear's bikes.Originally posted by biker_350 View PostOk i will ----shortly.

Can you suggest a good compatible fi or direct injection system for the rd?Originally posted by Sherwin View PostHow about employing a FI system or a direct injection system instead of the carb? Re: RD350 Phoenix
Now coming to the clutch and transmission.the clutch hub, basket were replaced, barnett clutch fibres and springs + a very unique set of clutch steel plates with a very unique design.the trany was again imported from the U.S and from a RD400.to make the clutch lever softer and more smooth and upgrade to hydraulic clutch, using a hayabusa slave mc,a shindy (https://www.denniskirk.com/shindy/ma...prd/381611.sku), master mc,a new modded clutch push rod, with a modded clutch cover, using russels steel braided lines.

Re: RD350 Phoenix
Great story ! good to see it coming alive again. Appreciate your love and enthusiasm for the rebuild. I have a few questions. are you sure RD 400 barnetts and springs fit into our basket and not too stiff? share other engine specs too. Pistons, crank, bore ,carbs etc. Try to get the ARS oil seal kit.

Re: RD350 Phoenix
thx everyone!i understand your excitement and it is pretty irritating when rebuild pics take so long but i am trying to take out time(of which i have little) as frequently as possible so do excuse me.regarding the clutch,i used the RD350 basket and primary gear so used the same fibres, steels and springs and even otherwise with a hydraulic clutch it would still have been quite nimble.Originally posted by yamdoot View PostGreat story ! good to see it coming alive again. Nice stuff Biker_350, where are you based.
Even i may work on a build of a RD, though the bike is already built just will be fine tuning, already have bought a set of tm28's and uni pods and few other bits and bobs. keep it up not many people are passionate about the 2 stokers any more.|NO WHEELS|
