Just found this thread... thanks for stirring up a few memories...

When I was in college in Texas (late 1980's), there were a number of RD's running around amongst my generally hooligan-ish associates (we were the ones out scouring the junkyards when we should've been in Chemistry class) - including a couple of absolutely perfect RD400's (one a Daytona Special) and a (derivative, water-cooled) RZ350. Along with the Kawi triples, these were all quite legendary amongst the gearheads I hung with. Having graduated and living in a metro, I could've bought from a friend a wildly ported, suspension-modded, and frighteningly fast unit (thoroughly uncontrollable wheelies, even with the longer 400cc swingarm), which I ultimately passed up on account of not feeling quite ready to die. Being older and wiser now, if given the chance, I'd buy it in a heartbeat .

Noted your "ZRM" registration with interest: There were dozens of these, many old and ragged, some pristine, and some extremely beautifully modified, in Mizoram five years ago when I was out there (getting married at the time!); One of them, in quite original condition, was offered to me at Rs15,000 at the time, and I kept thinking that if I hadn't just been married and had other things to do out here in H.P., I'd have done well to buy a whole truckload of the bikes and stockpile both them and the spares...

Well, last winter when I was out there again, I saw very few RD's around (though I finally met up with members of the newly-formed RD club and even got to ride with them a bit!) - I was told that dozens of the bikes were sold off to Bangalore, etc, in the past few years, so I guess I wasn't the only one with bright ideas! And I kind of regret not having gone forward with it - at least with that one bike!

Re: the smoke, I'm inclined to disagree - Not an RD expert by any means, but have owned quite a few 2-strokes over the years (including, at present, a 45-year-old chainsaw), and will say that in general a correct oil ratio running low-smoke 2T oil should be producing relatively little visible smoke. And people should not think that running a little less lube oil is going to make the engine wear out faster, either - all other things being equal, more oil in the mix actually makes the overall fueling LEANER - which means MORE heat, and MORE wear (if you don't believe me, check out some of the 2-stroke tuning/racing sites)!

Anyway, having ridden in a pack of about fifteen of these RD's heading out of Aizawl to a roundup point (I, sadly, astride my father-in-law's lowly FZ), I must say: Though I found the auditory sensations thoroughly intoxicating, I couldn't see the smoke as anything like a "feast", but as something more like lung cancer waiting to happen. Even being the owner of a vintage, modded KB125-RTZ (twisting the grip always brings a smile), the experience gave me a new appreciation for regulatory agencies and laws that effectively killed off these awesome old machines.

Too many ill-tuned old 2-strokes running around and the NGT will eventually take notice (no new ground here, the EPA made things miserable for a lot of people long before this)...

Regards and happy riding... (and don't be afraid to tune your 2T pump down a little - or for that matter maybe remove it entirely, in favor of a pre-mix; AFAIK, most racing 2-strokes did not use oil pumps; these were fitted to production bikes mainly for the sake of convenience at the petrol bunker).

I am running on premix and go by 35 ml per 1000ml petrol. I totally agree many two stokers think that is that don't smoke it is not right,,, I have removed the 2t pump and has a blocker installed that I got from the us

Fantastic work, Naveen. I was hooked onto this thread and have immense admiration for your passion and envy your deep pockets .
I recently finished rebuilding my Yezdi Roadking to factory stock and i understand the bitter sweet symphonies associated with this exercise. But i am now addicted and just finished procuring another Roadking to initiate a custom re- build (looking for a good fabricator in Hyderabad). Anyway, wouldn't want to hack this thread with the Roadking tantrums, will start another thread with a detailed write up soon.

I want to try the Motul 2T (although i have reservations on whether it will actually do any good on a 35+ year old machine), please do let me know where i can come across this stuff

              great stuff naveen
it was an exciting read and its good to know
that ur still at it trying to improve.

i used to have a RD back when i was in india. i had to sell it
when i was leaving after finishing my studies. now i realize
what a huge mistake i made. i have a pair of R5 cylinders and heads
lying around in the hope i would build my own. thinking of selling them
as they are just lying around since 9 years

i hope to meet u in hyderabad someday and talk bikes.
