  • Rebuilding the RX 100 at last!

    Ref to thread here

At last I have started the job of rebuilding the bike and giving it a stock status (except a few areas).

    The condition of the bike:
Cosmetically shot. Howver, the engine is in superb condition. The fellow who sold the bike happened to replace new cylinder kit a year ago, the date he sold the bike. Condition of cylinder and piston is perfect. Rings need to be replaced. Reed valve needs to be replaced. Clutch plates need a change. Transmission and crankshaft is perfect.

    Replacement list majors:
    Both wheels (Rings/Spokes/Tyres/Tubes)
Handle and all stuffs that are on the handle (levers/yokes/rvm/switch)
    Front Fender
    Rear Fender (1+1)
    Seat
    Monograms
    Lights (Head/Back/Indicators/Reflex reflectors)
Speedo assembly (Left + Middle + Right)
    Locks
    Front Fork Pipes(Inner)
    Rear shock absorbers
    Ball Racer (Steering cone kit)
    Clutch Plates
    Standard Rings
    Reed Valve
    Silencer Bend Pipe
    Brake pedals
    Wiring/Brake switches
    Charger

    Replacement list minors:
    Cables (Accelerator/Meter/Front Brake)
    Oil Seals
    Gaskets
    Numerous rubbers
Nuts, bolts, screws, washers, clamps, cotter pins as required
    Hoses (Carb, 2T)
Manifolds (Air filter to Carb, Carb to Cylinder)
    Rear foot rests
    Brake rod
    Side stand
    Adjusters (Chain/Rear Brake)

    Parts to be painted:
Color scheme will be as per this picture of the RX 135s produced almost in the last lots. See here
    Chasis - Black
    Suspension - Black
    Tank - Metallic Light Beige
    Panels - Metallic Light Beige
    Hubs - Silver
    Fork pipes (outer) - Silver
    Chain cover - Silver
    Magnet cover - Silver
    Clutch cover - Silver
    Double stand - Black

Color used will be ICI vector PU.

Parts to be chromed or polished:
    Silencer

    Custom makes:
A special black colored powder coated leg guard.

    Approximate budget:
    Rs. 18000

    Status now:
Bike has been dismantled and the stuffs for painting have been submitted. A turn around time of 10 days is expected for painted part arrival.

I will try to post some pictures from tomorrow. I also have a query on the 6V to 12V conversion - what exactly do I need to change?

Firstly, all the best for the rebuild

Perhaps you could have chosen a darker colur (like Black maybe) but ofcourse, its an individual choice. No offence meant

Regarding conversion, I replaced the following:-

              Battery(Minda)-Rs.578
              R.R Unit-Rs.511
              Flasher-Rs.130
              Wiring Assembly-Rs.378

              Ofcourse, all the bulbs too.

My technician said, no need for coil-rewinding. Perhaps Pradeep can clarify.

EDIT: I must say, you are getting quite a bit of work in Rs.18000, especially considering the parts you are replacing.

Pardon my ignorance folks, but how does one know that the internals i.e., crankshaft, transmission, bore, piston, cylinder etc. are perfect? Does the engine need to be opened up at a mechanic's place?
But in case of checking these things beforehand, I'm sure no seller would allow this to be done!
Please help-I also want to buy an RX with a good engine.

hey dont worry Sarvajit, we all are basically learning only every day out here.
Yes you are right that no owner would permit you to open up the engine and then buy it or give it back to him depending on the condition of the engine. Thats why when you buying a 2 stroke vehicle, either one should be well experienced or take someone experienced along if possible.

If the abovesaid things are not perfect then when you start the engine you would know it through the noise of engine..... also when you ride it you can also feel the under power or the engine being too harsh. Also other thing you can do is to rev the engine and then try to listen to sound when the bike is parked, it should not be too much clanky.... though 2-strokes have some noise in engine.

                    All the Best Sarvajit

Other 2-stroke brothers kindly your comments here

                        1. Buying an RX with good engine...not sure...I am not that optimistic
                        2. Usually, when you ride the bike you will come to know. Poor acceleration, unusual noise from the bore, etc.
                        3. More accurate way would be compression test. If it is very low then there is surely problem with cylinder
                        4. Usually most of the RXians budget for cyilnder kit.

                          Some pics:

The Big Carton full of spares:

                          Inside it:

The RX 100 spare manual (comes handy at times)

All spares are OEM except lock set and headlight cover which is of Minda.

                          Spares needed as of now:

                          Seat
                          Wiring
                          Tyres
                          Reed Valve
                          12V Rectifier
                          12V Battery
12V Armature (Magnet + Coils) [??? I still do not know if this is really required]

                          and a few minors.

                          Break up of costs:
                          ==============
Cost of spares purchased till now: Rs 10,500 (approx)
Cost of painting/zinc/polishing of chrome: Rs 3500

Currently parts are being painted and quite confused on the 6V to 12V conversion.

Let me tell you this !! according to me the rx 100's never came with 12v electricals, the 12v electrical was introduced from rxg's as you told the 94 onwards model never came with 12v electrical, i confirmed this from one of the mech he himself owns a 100 94 model, he told me this, so chill as i had told you
there are two types of coil plate in the 135 series select which one you want.

You need to change the magnet as well as the coil plate wiring harness and the rectifier and you are done, if you find any info please feel free to trouble me ..

                              Pradeep,

The 12V electricals were there on RX on the pinstripe models. Here is a thread on the RX history.

                              Time to change your mech.
