Fazer that was along with us could not climb Khardung La Pass so we removed his air filter to ensure he climbs the pass. He stalled again however was able to reach the summit after dying twice.
Read more about this here - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/1...tml#post790840

Next day, Fazer failed to climb Chang La Pass ( 2nd Highest Pass) even after removing the air filter and we were left with no option than parking it at Zingral Post and I later took my friend as a pillion and conquered the pass.

My friend came back from Pangong the same evening and took his bike from the post and went back to Leh to repair it where there is a authorised Yamaha service centre. Apparently, his carb was full of dust and debri due to which he could not successfully climb the passes. Post the service, He did not face any issues till the end of the trip.

More over he was riding in higher rpms and lower gears I assume to climb passes putting lot of load on the engine which is not the right way to climb passes. Riding style also matters while climbing passes!

          • There are better ways of getting more oxygen (or may be letting lesser fuel)

Removing the filter totally is inviation to trouble! A few punctures could have done the trick.

            • During our ride to Chang La, we(me and vishwas) had to remove the air filters from our bikes and then only we were able to climb that pass. His bike(FZ) still didn't climb, so he it left there at the military camp and we(me and the 3rd rider with vishwas as pillion) rode till pangong lake.

Later on reaching Leh, got that main jet setting done and then we all were good to ride anywhere.

              • For which he said he had to do it as he couldnt get a wire to block up the Jet to reduce the fuel flow

Ya, there was no possibility of doing that during that time at the military camp.

Removing air filter helped a little bit but still the bike refused to climb after a certain height.

I had adjusted main jet setting as per information given by Yamaha service guys. However, the bike still refused to climb.

Our riding group's technical capability of doing this was NIL.

Here is a detailed explanation of what my FZ faced.

Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

No, that was the AFR ratio which you tried to adjust..but that wasn't the solution which we were looking for. Even I tried that, not AT ALL helpful.

Somehow I have an ominous feeling that you are correct this time. It helped to a certain level but was not completely successful.

Now I remember. I was not just fiddling with AFR. I had already changed the jet setting earlier.
