  • [Photo Feature]: Hoodibaba is back from Sikkim and Bhutan - Soloride

    Hi friends,

I am back from this North Eastern Trip covering 5430 kms (from 19th April to 1st May, 2013).

Frankly, this proved to be the toughest trip so far. May be this is the reason very little information was available on Xbhp site, although I got very useful and vital information from Xkmph who have travelled in this sector widely. I thank them for making my trip a success.

Special thank to Mr. Sajal Bhattacharya and his wife who made my stay at their home in Behala, Kolkata totally comfortable and they indeed handed over the keys of their house to me so that whenever I come back from long drive in and around Kolkata, and if by chance they are out, then I can enter the house and take rest.

For the benefit of Xbhpians, I am writing this travelogue in the form of a report, carrying vital information for use by the fellow travellers in future, which would not be very long but surely would be blended with good photographs to keep the interest of the readers alive.

I would admit that being solo has its own advantages (as one can cover lot of ground per day) but, on the other side, cannot cover the visuals in the form of pics as he is always in a hurry to cover the target.

I am attaching one photograph to start with:

Thanks Monk for putting up my sketched Map on the front page. After some trials, I have also been able to put up the link of the route map on google map as guided by you. Here is a link of the entire 5430 kms route of this trip:

The route shows Changu Lake, whereas I went upto Baba Ka Mandir (just before Nathula, as I could not get permit for Nathula despite by best efforts through my sources at Siliguri Xkmph )

Re: Hoodibaba is back from Sikkim and Bhutan - Soloride

At the outset I would like to thank all the members of Xkmph for providing me great moral support and the vital information for this trip. I must confess that this has so far been my toughest trip (solo-ride) as not much information was coming forward from the Northern Sector of India. I would say that for North East Sector Xkmph have all the necessary information to make the trip comfortable and successful.

As during this trip I covered a number of cities (with night halts) and stretched from (NH-2) Delhi to Varanasi to Kolkata to Siliguri (NH34) to Bhutan (Thimpu & Paro) to Sikkim to Siliguri to Darbhanga-Gorakhpur-Lucknow-Moradabad to Delhi (East-West Expressway – to call it expressway is complete misnomer) aggregating in a total of 5430 kms in 13 days (19thApril to 1st May, 2013), a detailed travelogue would take too much time and space, and might dilute the interest of readers, I am presenting this trip in the form of a report, in the barest minimum words with necessary photographs.

                    Hope you would like it.

                    Statistics:

                    Dates 19th April to 1stMay, 2013 (13 days)
                    Total Distance covered 5430 kms
Bike Model Suzuki GS 150 R
                    Maximum Speed 111 kms
Cost of Petrol Rs. 7000 +/- (petrol was cheaper in Bhutan by Rs. 13 per litre)
Hostel Stay, Food and other costs= Rs. 8000+/-

                    Day 1 – 19th April, 2013 {Delhi to Varanasi} (800+kms)

Started from Ramprastha (Ghaziabad) early morning and took NH-2 (which is in good shape upto Kolkata with easily availability of petrol throughout ). With not much traffic I was riding comfortably at good speed (90+) and by afternoon crossed Kanpur when it became quite hot to drive. Reached Varanasi by evening with short breaks at some basic Tea stalls with not much to offer as good food. The link road from NH-2 to Varansi city was in a very bad shape. Hotels are available at reasonable rates.

                    Photographs of Day 1:

Re: Hoodibaba is back from Sikkim and Bhutan - Soloride

As you know I am around 57 years old and there are very few bikers of my age who are doing long rides. Although I had been to different parts of the country, but not on bike. Till the age of 50 I had no inclination that I would be doing such long rides. Although till then I had heard of people going on rides, but to a maximum of 250-300 kms in a day. But eversince I visited Badrinath (on a pilgrimage by bus) and saw young bikers on their way to Hemkund Sahib, something just clicked in me to do it myself. And the "hoodibaba" within me came to life and eversince I have not looked back. After doing some trial trips in Himalayas, I did the Ladakh Trip followed by Rann of Kutch and now it was time to conquer the East. Since this was going to be really a long trip, I tried to get some company but not much response came forward and this further strengthened my determination to do it alone. And thus I started and with the help of Xkmphians completed this trip successfully.

Sorry, was having difficulty in uploading pics earlier. Now the problem is solved.

Enjoy rest of the pics of Day 1: Delhi to Varanasi
