With the wet weather over the last few weeks not showing any signs of letting up, Gurpratap and I decided to take the yet-to-be-launched Jeep Compass for a spin to Lonavala for breakfast. Apart from a few Ducatis which were out, the usual bustle of bikes on the weekend wasn't there. We are both eagerly waiting for a dryish weekend to arrive so that we can take our bikes out.

Gurpratap and I finally got out for a ride on Sunday after almost a month. After much debate as to where we should head the previous evening we decided on Lonavala, as the probability of escaping from the rain was very low in any direction of our choosing. Sure enough it began to pour heavily shortly enroute but I enjoyed the experience even though we were soaked to the gills. Gurpratap had bought outer cover rain gear (Mototech) from Open Roads the previous day which helped keep him relatively dryer, but apart from my chest and back due to the rain liner inside my jacket I was drenched. We encountered heavy crosswinds, broken roads on the Dehu road stretch, and limited visibility during the ride. There were quite a few bikers out this rainy day and we were joined at Rk's by one of Gurpratap's engineering college friend who happened to be vacationing in Lonavala. We returned via Dehu road bypass thus avoiding the bad roads we encountered whilst on the first leg. The aftereffect of such a ride would now mean getting my bike washed this week and have my riding gear cleaned.

Thanks. I usually post an update about road conditions in the appropriate section for 'road conditions update' in xBhp. Since most of the rides are in Maharashtra, you would find my updates there.

This video is from the morning spin yesterday (Sunday) to Lonavala for breakfast at RKs. The Mototech rain gear which I wore for the first time held up real well and was effective. The entire ride was characterized by plenty of spray and dirt which got kicked up by vehicles in the front. Surprisingly, there were not the usual number of bikes out though we did bump into George on his Hayabusa which has clocked 50000 Kms. Quite a few of my riding buddies are heading to Leh this month and I wish them all a safe ride and a fabulous time.

Gurpratap, Deep and I took off from Pune to Chorla Ghat for our Independence Day ride. We began the ride leaving Pune at 6.15 am and first stopped at the vada pau joint just before Khambatki ghat for that much needed cup of tea. We were disappointed to see very few bikes out, thinking this occasion usually is celebrated by riders out in full strength over the holidays. Another stop after Satara we headed to Nipani where we stopped for breakfast at Hotel Satyawati around 11 am.
We reached our hotel R.K. Renaissance at Belgaum around 1 pm and dumped our luggage. The hotel is situated on the main KLE road and offers safe basement parking and at Rs.2500/- per room which was the executive suite we felt that this was value for money. We shortly thereafter kicked off to begin the ride to Chorla Ghat after negotiating through the busy town of Belgaum in the afternoon is a pain though short lived. The hungry Ducati and somewhat thirsty Thruxton were refueled at Belgaum before we began the twisties. I was apprehensive and tip toed on this part of the ride as I was to overcome the spot where I crashed and broke my arm last year. The turn is still tricky and looms up suddenly which cuts away at a sharp right angle. I caution those riders on this section to watch out for this turn which is about 20 km after leaving Belgaum. The hill was lush green and beautifully paved throughout the ride which is something that all three of us prefer. We turned around at the Karnataka Goa border which is shortly after hitting the crest of the hill. Enroute we stopped to take a few pictures and enjoy being one with nature in all it's splendid glory. India truly is a beautiful country. We returned back to the hotel at around 17.15 and settled down for the serious business of R&R. We began our drinking and eating rather early as we were all hungry having had no food since our stop at Nipani. We tucked into dishes of chicken, fish, masala papad, fries and sandwiches which was all delicious and very reasonably priced.
We left Belgaum the next morning at 7.15 am and spent some time switching bikes on those lovely Karnataka roads. I came away very impressed by the Diavel which has super comfortable ergonomics and tons of power though not as smooth as the Thruxton which is powerful as well.
We stopped for breakfast at Nipani once again and then bombed the ride back to Pune to reach home at 1.15 pm having done a round trip of 820 km. The entire ride was devoid of rain which apart from some minor drizzle here and there was a blessing.
