    a. What you say about 220 flies in the face of many a established tourers. Even R15 has done well at Gurudongmar if I recall right - except the tyres.
    b. I am confused as to how an octane booster can compensate for the lack of oxygen.

    Agree about ZMA/200 though

      to my knowledge Leh is about 10,000 Ft above seal level and Kandurg La is over 18,000 Ft above Sea Level.

      At 18,000 ft above sea level the air contains only about 50% of oxygen compared to air at sea level. At 10,000 Ft it is about 78%. Speaking about the effect on air fuel mixtures here...

      I am not even generalizing Fi systems here. I am speaking of what was tested and what came out with a huge difference in performance. The ZMA is good. Ask for anywhere I would cast my vote for the ZMA but the question asked was about the Best bike for a Leh trip.

      Ravi Kiran's P220 took the Marsimik La (World's highest Motorable Pass at over 18,500 Ft) with ease where Bunny had to peddle his way up on his ZMA.

        Honestly, for someone who has seen a Bajaj scooter in those parts besides RX, some discovers etc - I think this is massive overkill.

        Any reliable bike will go.

        And in my limited experience with the Motul - that's the last thing I'd want to put in a Pulsar before going to Leh.

        Just take a bike you love, have leaves in hand, and a song in your heart. The rest is irrelevant detail.

          The P220, in my opinion (as also clearly been said by one member) is one of the better bikes that would take on Leh/ Ladakh with ease. I don't think there would be any real need of 'octane boosters'; come-on...

          Sir,i might not be great tourer like you or aryan, but yess..
          The things i have written there are certainly on the basis of what i have expirinced and seen as change of performance in the bikes,
          These bikes have to be revvedd hard to sustain or meet the same performance which they provide at plains..
          where as ZMA and 200 have done the things so easily,
          Two instances!
          1) by the time i was riding to shimla-kufri-chail,i had ridden these bikes for quite a lot kms and have seen a noticeable change!
          2) i went to rishikech and then we went upto Jhadipani,a place at i think 7,500 or plus altitute where R-15 had lost the power that it showed in plains, same was with 220, i have not ridden in Leh / Ladakh.. BUt yes..what i have written is purely on my expirience!

            I Agree, Any bike can go... Why not..it was a relative and a realistic comparison! when we had choices.. when i am taking a discover along with me everywhere! why cant a R*15 or 220 do it..??

              Yes... it should be that way. But these American jobs come with Super American tensions and Pseudo American pay cheques...

              About the Motul, yes, you have a point there... don't ever go for the Motul 300V in a Pulsar for the first time if you plan to ride to remote places... get the oil leaking problem rectified beforehand.

              We have two P220's in Hyderabad that did Kandurg-La in year 2008. Both ran on Motul 300V and NGK Iridiums... The cold starts do matter when your bike freezes in ice overnight. You know it much better than I do.

                  i'm seriously interested for the trip. June is fine with me but i need 1 month for preparation. (Note: Leaves)

                    Yes. Having personally suffered the oil leak, I honestly think that Motul is junk (for me), and even for others, if untried, not to try on Leh.

                    As for NGK Iridiums, I only find that madness on bike forums. I have friends among high end car tuners, and the kind of conditions that they say would enable a visible gain are not the likes of P220. But then again, to each, their aphrodisiacs. Or maybe, I'm just growing too old.

                    And yeah, cold starts? LOL. Let me tell you something I have not heard on most forums but which I realized courtesy 430 am start at Drass and 5am start at Pang (not applicable if you start post day break).

                    All this NGK counts for crap. As does Motul. If you had 10W40 (like Sprinta 4000), that may actually make a difference. Or maybe not. I was running Elf Moto4Gold. What worked for me was a jug full of steaming hot water thrown on the crank case. So much for Iridium, lol.

                    Coming back to the point - its just a bloody road. The more one pays obeisance caling it this that, is a waste of time and energy. Just Ride

                      R-15 'lacks on power' not because of high altitudes but because of short gearing. This is why it requires high-revs to build up the momentum even at ghats just a little above sea level, forget about high-altitudes. Any FI bike should do well on those altitudes (in principle). and same question for you L.P. as Hitanshu pointed out, "how an octane booster is going to compensate for lack of oxygen?"

                          Where are our Bros. who did this trip last year ? We need gyaan from experienced riders, & yes how good would the FZ be for the trip ? I was thinking of doing this trip with another group who are doing it in July. But if people from here are going I don't mind joining in.

                            so letz get the list of riders and decide on the date fast!
                            A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

                            Always be ready (get geared) to fall and then think of sitting on the motorcycle.

                                Very true said Mate...... take it as a ride..... though not as comfortable as the one on express highway, but people have been doing Leh on their 20yrs old Jawa, bullets..........just enjoy the ride....
