  • Ride to Kodai on my 40 year old YEZDI

I did this ride my very first long motorcycle ride long time back, but i guess its never too late to share it. I've done quite a few rides after this but this was special. This is my first travelogue so kindly excuse me for any wrong.

Its called the "Southern Raid" organized by the Jawa-Yezdi clubs of South India. This was the 7th edition and my first!
    Destination: Kodaikanal,TN
    Ride date: Oct 09, 2015

Riders from Bangalore, Kerala, Tamilnadu, Mumbai and Pune attended the meet. We also had the privilege to ride along with Deepak Kamath. He is a legend in Indian biking circuit. First Indian To Travel Across The Globe On A Indian Motorcycle Yezdi and circumnavigated the globe in 119 days, out of which he spent 49 days riding a motorcycle. All this in 1994.

I was thinking about this ride for months from the time i got my B. (i call my Bike "B", its a YEZDI B Model built in 1978)
Roughly 40 riders from Bangalore registered for the ride.

I had no experience in preparing for long rides and this being my first, this is how my bike looked fully loaded. The blue rain coat you see stuffed between the two bags went flying somewhere on the highway and never got it back.

I was the first to reach the start point at 5 am, just after the EC toll gate. I stood in silence for 15 mins and then heard the familiar beats. Few bikes approached the start point. A Yezdi 350 and a Jawa perek (of 1950s) were among them, the group was riding from Pune. I had a little chat with them, so their plan was to take a break in a near by hotel somewhere and start off fresh to kodaikanal. The group left the spot after a while. I was still alone waiting for the BLR guys to come. Finally we all assembled near the EC toll gate at around 6 am. I really didn't know anyone before the ride. I was only familiar with few faces. Remember this was my first long ride and my heart was pounding hard. I was excited and nervous at the same time. And so we started at 6:30am roughly. Within a short distance i was cruising in 90's, covered about 30km and my engine dies suddenly. I made a signal to my fellow riders and stopped. I had no clue what happened and that dreadful thought came into my mind of transporting the bike in a truck or something and my trip is over. But no, it was engine seize, I kicked it and B roared back to life again. (i bet only on a Yezdi you can do that) I was advised to mix more oil with the fuel and be gentle on the throttle. Praveen who rode a Roadking was riding sweep with me. We went along cruising in 60s and 70s and by now I really started enjoying the ride and felt lot more relaxed. Our first break was at Krishnagiri for Breakfast. One of the riders Prithvi had a flat Tyre just as we reached for breakfast. I was all excited, so removed my tools and helped him get the tyre out and got it fixed from a near by puncture repair shop. On the breakfast table, one of the seasoned riders who has been to all southern raid edition so far, looked at my B parked outside from the hotel window and said, that bike once belonged to me. It was a little nostalgic moment for him i guess. So after a nice breakfast, we all started again. I was maintaining a steady 65-70 speed from there on. But just 10 mins into the ride, i saw 2 riders parked there bike on the side and trying to kick start there bike. It was Vicky Rahul on their Roadking and monarch. The monarch refused to start for some reason. Praveen who was tagging with me all this time, asked me to carry on as i was riding slow and he would help Rahul with the bike. Just as i was reaching Salem i saw Sam on his camouflaged B. We rode together from here to Kodai. On the stretch from Salem to Dindigul, i felt a slight wobbling on my rear tyre. Sam was with me and we stopped to investigate, suspected a flat Tyre but all was OK.The time was roughly 1 pm by the time we reached Dindigul. Had a nice Biriyani from Thalappakattirestaurant and started again. This was the most the exciting part of the ride as we started to climb. My B was in his element now, climbing effortlessly. I was still feeling that something is not right with the rear tyre. But anyways just ignored it and enjoyed the ride and breathtaking scenery with the little drizzle of rain. Me and Sam stopped at a tea shop and just as we were enjoying the tea, Sam noticed that one of rear shocks of my B had broken, in fact it was hanging. He asked how come you didn't know. We both were very surprised. So basically my B was riding on one shock for roughly 120 kms. Sam advised me to keep my weight on one side and ride carefully. We finally reached the top at 4 pm.......to be continued.

Re: Ride to Kodai on my 40 year old YEZDI

So 4 pm me and Sam reach the top. I don’t really remember the hotel name we stayed but I remember a big open space just after we made the entrance gate. Guys who had already made it from different places welcomed us with claps and it felt so nice to have made it this far. Though my B was a little wounded but we still made it in one piece. The weather was pleasant with slight drizzling, and the sight of so many Yezdi’s and Jawa’s felt refreshing. Quickly few riders just came up to my bike little shocked looking at the broken rear shocks, and one of the gentleman from Mumbai remember saying “only on a Yezdi son”, it’s a tough bike. Deepak sir was already present when we reached and I got to know that he covered 460kms in some 6 hours on his roadking from BLR. I had only read about him and his accomplishments and it felt great to meet him in person, a very humble person. Between the thought of how am I going to get my shocks fixed was constantly there. I remember someone telling me don’t worry we can get it welded here from the town. I was relieved hearing that. Soon Praveen, Vicky and Rahul made it as well. Just as I was talking to them in a group, heard a loud sound. I turned back and saw couple of bikes fallen. Among them was my B. I rushed to the scene and was shocked to see my B in that state. So apparently, Shashi a BLR rider sat on my B and it fell on another monarch parked next to it. The ground surface was uneven everywhere and was also damp because of the rain. Nothing happened to the monarch but the crash guard of the monarch hit my B’s dome. I was trying hard to forget everything and enjoy the moment. By now I lost my 3k rain suit from wildcraft purchased only for this ride, broke my shocks and this now. Shit happens they say, and it happened to me.To be continued......

                    Hi Akshay,
Ashok sir and his beautiful perek BMU 407 were not there for this ride. But there was a Pune rider on a Perek, it was Rajesh N Khedekar. Below pic of Deepak Kamath and Rajesh Khedekar.

Re: Ride to Kodai on my 40 year old YEZDI

Luckily my B’s headlight wasn’t broken. It just came out due to the impact. Because the dome was dented I couldn’t fix the headlight back. I was lucky that the clutch and brake lever was intact because I wasn’t carrying a spare. Instinctively, the first thing I did after this incident was kick start my B and it fired without a problem. It was getting dark by now, so me Rahul and Vicky went to the other bldg. of the same resort for the stay, which is about a kilometer from where we are now. All 3 decided to share the room.

The next day with some hammering the dome was fixed and got the shocks welded from a local shop. We also had a DJ party in the evening and so me and Rahul decided to buy some booze. We went on his Monarch to the local wine shop and got a couple of beer bottles. It was a brand called “Bullet” or something. Also, bought some local homemade chocolates. I only had half of the bottle as it tasted horrible and that little I had was enough to get me high for a while....

If this beer in Kodaikanal was from a TASMAC outlet in TN, I can second that it is terrible stuff. Ha!

It was late in the night and we were going back to our stay now. I was on my B waiting on the entrance gate and saw the Pune gang on their bikes getting ready to head back home. Just when I finished saying bye-bye to them and started my B, I heard Prithvi and Pranav from BLR asking me to stop. So, they both were on Pranav’s CL II and the headlight of the CL II was not working. The one kilometer stretch to the other bldg. where we were staying is pitch dark with few turns. So, they went in front and I was right behind them. I think just halfway distance, my B stopped. My Bike runs on points and it doesn’t have a battery. As soon as B stopped, the lights went off. I heard “Oh shit F” from Prithvi who was riding in front. I don’t keep my bike idling, I prefer dead beat and so it happens sometimes. I kicked and kicked, B didn’t want to start. Because it was constantly drizzling and was cold, starting was not easy. But we were not there for long, after some kicking, B was running again and obviously with the lights on, much relieved. As soon as we reached our stay, I clean the spark plug, clean the points, packed my bag and went to sleep.

The plan was to start early in the morning. Me, Rahul and Vicky decided to ride together. We started at around 6 am (plan was earlier than this) after saying bye to everyone till we meet again. When we started, never imagined the return journey was going to be so exciting and full of experiences. To be continued...
